Watch Russia’s shotgun drone shoot down a model airplane

It might be best to consider the video a proof of concept. It’s a demo reel under ideal conditions. The complete flight, from tail-sitting launch to balloon popping to drone-downing and landing again, runs about three and a half minutes. What’s not clear is the control scheme — is the drone being remotely piloted, as is likely, or is it flying an autonomous path? What sensors does it have that enable it to perceive its targets? How quickly can this drone launch and find a target that isn’t already over the airfield, and when gets close, will it have enough ammunition, flight time, and accuracy to do what it needs to do? Much remains unanswered.

Club refurbishing model airplane as tribute to late Seymour man

A model airplane that has served as a tribute to the man who helped establish a radio-controlled model flying club in the 1960s and hung in a downtown Seymour restaurant for many years has disappeared.

That doesn’t mean, however, that the World War I biplane model that helps commemorate the life of Jack Spencer is gone for good.

Instead, members of the Southern Indiana Flying Eagles plan to restore the Fokker D.VII and hang it right back on the ceiling of Larrison’s Diner. The plan is for that to be completed before the club’s Hoosier Scale Classic scheduled for Aug. 2 through 4 at Freeman Field.

3 Reasons Southwest Airlines’ Hawaii Service Could Fail

Last week, Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) finally began selling tickets for flights to Hawaii, more than 16 months after it first announced its intention to enter the Hawaii market. With introductory fares as low as $49 one way briefly available for flights from Oakland and San Jose to Hawaii, the launch of ticket sales elicited a huge response from customers.

Hawaii is an extremely popular tourist destination, and Southwest Airlines has a huge customer base in the continental U.S. — and especially in California. That makes Hawaii flights look like a natural expansion opportunity for the low-fare airline giant.

Nevertheless, there’s no guarantee that Hawaii will be a lucrative market for Southwest Airlines. Here are three potential pitfalls that could cause the carrier to struggle in this big market.

Does Southwest have enough amenities for six-hour flights?

One potential issue is that Southwest Airlines’ business model is built around shorter flights. It’s a roughly 2,500-mile trip from California to Hawaii, whereas the average Southwest flight today is less than 1,000 miles. The airline does operate a handful of transcontinental routes that are comparable in distance to California-Hawaii flights, but they are few and far between.

One disadvantage for Southwest Airlines is that customers have to bring their own food along. Hawaiian Holdings (NASDAQ:HA) still offers complimentary meals for customers in coach, and other airlines have buy-onboard options. By contrast, Southwest’s planes have small galleys, so the carrier will only offer a “snack bag” on its Hawaii flights. Many travelers may

DealBook Briefing: Mueller’s Done, but Trump Still Faces the Law

• At first, tech products like Facebook and Gmail were democratic: They were the same no matter who you were, and they were free. Companies extolled the value of widespread laptop use in schools, arguing that they were preparing kids for the future.

• But now schools that are short of cash, like those in Kansas, focus on screens, not human interaction. And low-income elderly patients rely on digital avatars to keep them company.

• Meanwhile, Ms. Bowles writes, “As wealthy kids are growing up with less screen time, poor kids are growing up with more. How comfortable someone is with human engagement could become a new class marker.”

• “The wealthy can afford to opt out of having their data and their attention sold as a product. The poor and middle class don’t have the same kind of resources to make that happen.”

The Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown called on banking regulators to oust Tim Sloan as Wells Fargo’s C.E.O.

President Trump plans to nominate Stephen Moore, an economic adviser and frequent critic of the Fed, as a governor of the central bank. (Here’s why he might be a poor choice.)

Citigroup fired eight traders in Hong Kong for reportedly misleading clients.

Wrecking Crew drummer dies

Drummer Hal Blaine, played on hits of Sinatra, Elvis, dies

By ANDREW DALTON and HILLEL ITALIE

Associated Press

Tuesday, March 12

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hal Blaine, the Hall of Fame session drummer and virtual one-man soundtrack of the 1960s and ’70s who played on the songs of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys and laid down one of music’s most memorable opening riffs on the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” died Monday.

Blaine died of natural causes at his home in Palm Desert, California, his son-in-law, Andy Johnson, told The Associated Press. He was 90.

On hearing of his death, the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson called him “the greatest drummer ever.”

The winner of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award last year, Blaine’s name was known by few outside the music industry, even in his prime. But just about anyone with a turntable, radio or TV heard his drumming on songs that included Presley’s “Return to Sender,” the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were,” the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” dozens of hits produced by Phil Spector and the theme songs to “Batman,” ”The Partridge Family” and other shows.

“Hal Blaine was such a great musician and friend that I can’t put it into words,” Wilson said in a tweet that included an old photo of him and Blaine sitting at the piano. “Hal taught me a lot, and he had so much to do with our success — he was the greatest drummer ever.”

As a member of the Los Angeles-based

Designing For The Big Jet Set

Royal flying barges—airliners transformed into sumptuous private conveyances for the economic elite—aren’t a new idea. But until 20 years ago, these airplanes were basically one-offs, and few and far between. That began to change in 1996, when Boeing announced serial production of the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ)—a special- model 737 twinjet with a fully customizable interior and long-range fuel tanks. Airbus, and later Embraer, followed suit.Since then, more than 400 of these

modern-day flying palaces have been delivered across various aircraft models. And an elite cadre of designers has emerged to create exceptional spaces for the rarefied clientele who spend anywhere from US$10 million to US$200 million on an airplane interior.

Getting the job done right is no small feat. There are limits beyond the financial when designing interiors for airplanes, says David Velupillai, director of marketing for Airbus Corporate Jets. You can easily “mess up the performance of the aircraft” unless proper care is exercised, he cautions.

American Airlines extends cancellation of 737 Max 8 flights

American Airlines has extended its grounding of the 24 Boeing 737 Max aircrafts in its fleet through April 24, the company said in a statement released Sunday.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced an emergency order from the Federal Aviation Administration, which grounded Boeing 737 Max jets in the wake of an Ethiopian Airlines crash and a Lion Air accident in October that together killed 346 people.

American Airlines said it is still awaiting information from the FAA, Department of Transportation, National Transportation Safety Board, other regulatory authorities and Boeing before the planes can be put back into rotation.

“In the meantime, and in an effort to provide more certainty to our customers and team members and better protect our customers on other flights to their final destination, American has extended cancellations through April 24, which will result in approximately 90 cancellations each day,” the airline said in a statement.

American Airlines said it would contact affected customers directly.

The airline’s announcement comes amid reports that warning and training requirements set for the now-grounded aircraft may not have been adequate

After the Lion Air crash off Indonesia in October, the FAA and Boeing “came up with contents that we incorporated in our working manuals and also briefed all our pilots. But today we believe that might not have been enough,” said Tewolde Gebremariam, Ethiopian Airlines chief.

Ethiopian Airlines insists the carrier’s pilots went through all the extra training required by Boeing
