Delta garage sale attracts aviation superfans hoping to buy plane parts, clothing, cutlery

Aviation superfans flock to quirky Delta garage saleVideo

Aviation superfans flock to quirky Delta garage sale

ATLANTA — Next to the world’s busiest airport, a line snakes through a parking lot that leads to an unassuming warehouse.

As the clock strikes 9 a.m., Judy Bean proudly waves her arms, proclaiming “Let the games begin, come on in!” Eager shoppers flooded in.

The excitement is over a monthly flea market of sorts. But if you take a closer look, you’ll see the items all have something in common: the branding of Atlanta’s most famous airline.

HONEYBEES, IN DECLINE FOR DECADES, FINDING NEW HOMES IN UNUSUAL PLACES

Aviation superfans have been flocking to the Delta Surplus Sale since 1995, snagging items ranging from $2 CO2 cartridges to $3 t-shirts, $5 Sam Adams cut-outs and $225 airplane seats. It’s a sort of garage sale for airplane parts and proceeds benefit the Delta Flight Museum. Last year, the monthly sales brought in $100,000.

The list of items is endless.

There’s a new quirky item on every shelf – shoppers can choose from soup bowls, pins, antique timetables, food menus from flights, fashion runways, furniture, drink carts and airplane parts – all items retired or deemed as surplus from one of the largest global airlines that sees more than 180 million passengers annually.

“If [Delta] has something they need to get rid of, they contact me,” said event manager, Judy Bean.

Newly surfaced audio reveals how AA pilots union pilots confronted Boeing after Lion Air crash

Concerned pilots confronted Boeing over safety issues with the 737 Max 8 jet after the Lion Air disaster – four months before the second deadly crash in Ethiopia, a new audio recording reveals.

In the weeks following the deadly crash 737 Max 8 jet in Indonesia back in October, American Airlines pilots called a meeting to press Boeing executives to urgently address a series of safety issues.

The call for action, which could have required the best-selling aircraft model to be temporarily grounded, was made during a November 27 meeting between the American Airlines pilots union and officials from the aircraft manufacturer.

Pilots voiced a particular concern about the jet’s MCAS anti-stall system during the conference, but Boeing executives resisted, insisting they didn’t want to rush out a fix and they believed pilots would be capable of handling any glitches in the system.

Ethiopian Airlines CEO says carrier will be ‘last to fly’ Boeing 737 MAX planes

Family of American victim sues Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines over 737 Max crash

The family of 24-year-old Samya Stumo, who is a relative of former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, files a wrongful death lawsuit in the deadly crash; Dan Springer reports.

The CEO of Ethiopian Airlines (EAL) has announced that the carrier will be the “last to fly” the Boeing 737-MAX planes again after a deadly crash in March killed all 157 people onboard. If EAL decides to ever fly the aircraft again, the exec detailed, it will wait until other airlines use the plane first.

On May 13, CEO Tewolde Gebremariam told NBC News that he “cannot fully say” the Boeing 737-MAX aircraft will ever again join the Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet. On March 10, the carrier’s flight 302 – operating a Boeing 737-8 MAX plane – tragically crashed minutes after takeoff from Ethiopia’s capital, killing everyone on board.

“At this stage I cannot, I cannot fully say that the airplane will fly back on Ethiopian Airlines. It may, if we are fully convinced and if we are able to convince our pilots, if we are ever to convince our traveling public,” Gebremariam told NBC, specifying that EAL would be “the last airline to fly them again.”

Fears of flying Boeing’s 737 MAX won’t get in way of price conscious ticket shoppers: Reuters/IPSOS poll

NEW YORK/CHICAGO (Reuters) – U.S. fliers still consider ticket prices the most important factor when choosing a flight, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, suggesting two fatal crashes of Boeing Co 737 MAX jets have had little impact on consumer sentiment.

In the public opinion poll released May 15, only about half of U.S. adults say they are familiar with the airplane crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that together killed 346 people, and only 43% could identify the Boeing 737 MAX as the aircraft involved.

Most importantly for Boeing in the wake of the crashes, only 3% said that aircraft maker or model number was most important to them when buying a plane ticket. In contrast, 57% said ticket price was most important. The poll has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of 3 percentage points.

A Boeing spokesman declined to comment on the Reuters/Ipsos poll, but said the company is “committed to returning the MAX safely to the skies so that pilots, crew, regulators and the traveling public have total confidence in this airplane.”

During a call with investors last month, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said he knows “we have some work to do to earn and re-earn the trust of our customers and the flying public in particular.”

If global regulators clear the jets for flight, the Reuters/Ipsos

Parrsboro celebrating 100th anniversary of Handley Page Atlantic emergency landing | News

PARRSBORO, N.S. —

It’s a noise that woke many in Parrsboro in the early morning hours of July 5, 1919.

Some feared an air raid, even though the First World War had been over for nearly a year, while others at first thought it was a UFO. Instead, it was a massive Handley Page Atlantic four-engine bomber en route from the colony of Newfoundland to the United States – and it was in trouble.

Kerwin Davison, who is a member of the Parrsborough Shore Historical Society, has long been fascinated about the stories that have been passed down through time about the emergency landing.

With the 100th anniversary of that event approaching, he decided he wanted to use his talents to help commemorate the event.

Since last September, the 86-year-old Parrsboro resident has been building a model of an engine that would’ve been used by the aircraft that was designed and built as a First World War bomber that never entered service before the war ended in November 1918.

“We’re doing the 100-year commemoration this summer and I thought it would be a great idea to build one of the four Rolls Royce engines that would’ve been on that aircraft,” Davison said.

It was very early on a July morning in 1919 when many Parrsboro resident were awoken by the sound of a four-engine bomber circling the
