Model airplanes to fly in for Watts Over Wetzel in New Haven

The Radio Control Club of Detroit will host its 14th annual Watts Over Wetzel All Electric Fly-In June 1 and 2 at Wetzel State Recreation Area in New Haven.

The event will include acrobatic and 3D flying demonstrations, a barbecue food service, onsite vendors, a 50/50 raffle and a plane raffle.

The fly-in, which is scheduled to open at 8:45 a.m., has become one of southeast Michigan’s premier all electric fly-ins for radio-controlled model airplanes and helicopters, organizers said in a press release.

The club’s events typically draw pilots from across the nation. Planes range from small to large scale, with wingspans measuring from 1 foot to 9 feet.

Ample 110-volt electrical outlets and limited bleacher seating will be provided. Event organizers suggest pilots and spectators bring sun shades and lawn chairs.

Landing fees for pilot aircrafts are $10 for one day and $15 for two days. Pilots must be current members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The public is invited to view the air show at no cost.

Wetzel State Recreation Area is located at 60619 Werderman Road. The club’s flying field is located at the park’s south entrance, west of Wederman Road. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for access.

angelica mesiti intended to turn the australian pavilion into a site of democracy and community. visitors can take place in a mini amphitheater where a three-channel film elaborates on of conflicting voices and viewpoints. filmed in the plush senate chambers in italy and australia, the work encourages listening and recognizes the ways that we communicate. the piece starts with an operator of a device used by stenographers – known as the michela machine – who translates a poem by david malouf, then had the resulting coded language turned into music by composer max lyandvert… we won’t tell you more. expect that with exuberant energy mesiti demonstrates the creativity and strength of community at a time when ‘democracy’ is fragmenting and failing.

Boeing says has FINALLY completed software updates for its controversial 737 MAX jets

Boeing says it’s completed a software update for its 737 MAX jets, which have been grounded worldwide since March after they were involved in two fatal crashes across a five-month period.

The airplane manufacturer said on Thursday that it would also be providing additional information on the software to address requests from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Such details are set to include more rigorous instructions for how pilots should interact with controls and displays in different flight scenarios.

Once the requests are addressed, Boeing will then work with the FAA to schedule its certification test flight and submit final certification documentation, the company said.

The FAA is planning a meeting on May 23 in Fort Worth, Texas, with air regulators from around the world to update them on reviews of Boeing’s software fix and new pilot training.

The aviation regulator said Boeing had not yet submitted its final software package to the agency for approval.

On Wednesday, acting FAA Administrator Dan Elwell said he expected Boeing to make its formal submission for its software update in the next week or so.

Lilium Flies Full-Scale Prototype Of Powerful Electric Air Taxi

Lilium has gotten off the ground. The German air taxi startup has completed a hover test of a full-scale prototype of its ambitious electric aircraft, which is powered by tilting ducted fans designed to allow it to take off and land vertically while cruising with the efficiency and speed of a winged aircraft.

Lilium says its aircraft will be capable of carrying four passengers and their luggage plus a pilot 300 kilometers (186 miles), roughly the distance from New York to Boston, at a speed of 300 kilometers per hour, farther and faster than most of the scores of other electric air taxi startups.

The Munich-based company envisions knitting regions together more tightly with a transportation service it plans to run itself, enabling quick, affordable on-demand travel between major cities and ones that currently aren’t connected by airlines.

“How far can you get in an hour? We want to fundamentally change that for everybody,” Remo Gerber, Lilium’s chief commercial officer, told Forbes.

Lilium has raised $101 million in venture capital, making it one of the best-funded air taxi startups. However, it’s going to need a whole lot more money to execute its vision say analysts who rate the aircraft’s design as ambitious, but its business model even more so.

One thing Lilium seems to have in spades: raw power. The company, co-founded by four

North American Drone Masters to be held at Erie County Fair

International sanctioned races, 1 of 3 ‘master’-level competitions in world during 2019

The Erie County Agricultural Society and No Limit FPV have reached an agreement with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) and MultiGP to hold the first North American Drone Masters on Aug. 10-11. The event will take place during the Erie County Fair inside the Gusto Grandstand and will be a free event with paid admission to the Erie County Fair.

“Since the 1840s, the ‘need for speed’ has been part of the Erie County Fair experience,” said Fair Marketing Manager Marty Biniasz. “In the 1800s, it was harness racing that entertained fairgoers with days filled with trotters and pacers. Starting in the 1920s, the roar of gasoline-powered engines filled the grandstand as auto racing attracted tens of thousands to the ‘Hamburg Oval.’ Today, the ‘need for speed’ has returned to the Fairgrounds with the North American Drone Masters.”

This FAI-sanctioned race will be the first ever “masters”-level drone competition to be held in the region. It is part of the 2019 Masters Series of drone races. As an FAI-sanctioned event, this exclusive race is expected to attract drone teams from across the world. This prestigious, world-class event will be one of only three “masters”-level races held in the world during 2019. Other races will be held in Barcelona and Seoul.

In addition to $10,000 in purse money, the top three pilots from the races held at the Erie County Fair will gain a spot at the 2019 FAI World Championship Grand Final

This Ex-Googler Raised $160 Million After Pivoting His Business Model

Dave Girouard

Dave Girouard

How do you roll your college education and early work experiences into financing your dream of launching your own startup?

In his exclusive interview on the DealMakers Podcast, Dave Girouard revealed the path he took out of college, the lessons he learned from working at Apple and Google, and how he raised a golden Seed Round that every entrepreneur might be jealous of.

From Consulting to Catching the Entrepreneurial Bug

Right out of college Dave Girouard went into consulting with Accenture. It’s a common path I often see the best entrepreneurs taking. Though most often with Bain or McKinsey.

For Girouard, it offered the combination of being able to write code and do technical things but incorporating the business side. It offered the chance to try a whole bunch of things. You can make a lot of money in consulting, and you don’t spend any money because you don’t have much of a life at all. From Girouard‘s perspective, the positive side is that you do get to pay off a lot of your student debt fast.

During the interview, Dave shared that going into consulting at a firm like this you have to think on your feet. You have to be able to walk into a client’s business that you don’t have prior exposure to and provide some kind of useful analysis. You’re usually interacting with fairly senior people at the company if not the
