Famed pilot helps Scotland STEM students soar

MAXTON —Barrington Irving knows what it is like to be young and facing unlikely odds.

The pilot was in Maxton Thursday to tell other young people that they can achieve any goal they set for themselves.

Irving, who holds the record as the youngest pilot to fly around the world, spoke to a group of about 150 Carver Middle School Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Academy students, who crowded into an airplane hanger at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport to hear his story.

“It doesn’t matter who much revenue you have or don’t have, anyone can make it in this country and that is what makes this country so great,” Irving said.

Kingston Jamaica native, who was raised in Miami, has been featured in National Geographic for flying solo around the world in 2007, at the age of 23. He became the youngest person to do that in a single-engine airplane. The trip took a total of 97 days, and spanned 30,000 miles in a single-engine plane called “Inspiration.”

“Now I travel and talk at schools all across the nation, large cities and small communities, but this is the first time we have had the chance to bring kids to their local airport.”

This was Irving’s first trip to rural North Carolina to speak with students and share his experience and provide a hands-on lesson on how aviation can strengthen student’s understanding of the STEM curriculum.

“Yes I fly planes, but I do some much more outside of that, whether it’s tracking down sea snakes, or jumping out of

Model planes, trains, autos to cruise fairgrounds Saturday

LANCASTER – The Fairfield County Fairgrounds will be the place to be on Saturday for those who like radio-controlled airplanes, model trains, and model cars.

The Smoke Stack Hobby Shop and the Flying Forks radio-controlled airplane club are each hosting hobby expos. The trains and model show will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ed Sands Building and the Flying Forks airplane show will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the AAA Building.

While this is the first year Smoke Stack has hosted an expo, it marks the Flying Forks’ 42nd year. The events are technically separate, but the two are working together.

For example, Smoke Stack owner Don Riordan said he would direct those who are hungry to the airplane show, where they can get food. The Flying Forks will also offer free coffee.

“We’ll have a large display of airplanes,” show organizer and Flying Forks past president Tony Scott said. “We’ll have small ones all the way to airplanes with 14-foot wingspans. And they’ll be all kinds of hobby and radio-controlled equipment.”

In addition to airplanes, the Flying Forks show will feature drones.

“Drones have brought

Legacy Light Sport: Cub vs. Champ

For a little less money (sometimes), the Aeronca is a better flier, roomier, faster and easier to land. But it will always lack the Cubs cachet.

For a little less money (sometimes), the Aeronca is a better flier, roomier, faster and easier to land. But it will always lack the Cub’s cachet.

While pilots grow old waiting for the FAA to reform the Third Class medical, light sport flying remains the last refuge to stay in the air (Editor’s note:this article originally appeared in the March 2015 issue ofAviation Consumermagazine, before the advent of BasicMed). And vintage airplanes like Piper’s venerable J-3 Cub or the Aeronca Champion actually promise affordability, if not comfort and technological panache.

Taildraggers both, these two aircraft have always enjoyed a following and now they’re getting a closer look as potential LSA choices. There are plenty out there and the prices are right when compared to a new or even recent-model light sport costing four times as much.

While buying a Cub or Champ is a practical way to own an inexpensive light sport airplane, there are some caveats. They don’t fly like or as well as modern certified airplanes, they’re not always snap-of-the-fingers easy to maintain and if you can’t afford or gain

FAA ready for next step in simplifying certification

In the spring of 2016, the agency granted approval for Dynon to install its non-TSO’d D-10 digital attitude indicator as a commercial part in a number of light GA airplane models. By summer, Garmin had earned a supplemental type certificate (STC) to install its non-TSO’d G5 digital attitude indicator in some 560 models. In late March 2017, Garmin announced upcoming approval to also install the G5 as a horizontal situation indicator. Traditionally, only products meeting a technical standard order (TSO) can be installed in certified aircraft.

Although a big hit with consumers, the process for the approvals has been tedious and difficult for others to follow. All along, AOPA has been encouraging the FAA to create a pathway that is easier for any company to follow, and the agency has been listening.

To that end, the FAA, AOPA, and its industry partners have sought to understand the barriers and high-cost drivers to bringing new products to market. AOPA also has spoken with companies producing products in the experimental market to understand the hesitancy in entering the certified market.

The companies have reported that among the challenges are the complexities of software certification, meeting the certification requirements to ensure the products function properly in an electromagnetic high-intensity radiated field (HIRF) environment, and the ability to show that the product’s electrical components can function properly after being exposed to lightning.

While meeting standards within those categories is important, the debate has become what standards are necessary to ensure the safety of these products. Until now,

Raymond R. Donadio Sr.

Raymond R. Donadio Sr., who was a co-founder of the Towson law firm of Donadio Donadio, died Sunday of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at his Timonium home. He was 83.

“He did his job and didn’t bow to anybody,” said his brother, Robert E. Donadio Sr., who still practices law in Timonium. “And when we worked together, we never lost a case.”

Raymond Richard Donadio Sr. was the son of Anthony P. Donadio Sr., a Baltimore Ohio Railroad lawyer, and Violet Donadio, a homemaker. He was born in Indianapolis and moved in 1934 with his family to a home on Springlake Way in Homeland.

He was a 1951 graduate of Calvert Hall College High School, where he played varsity football, and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1956 from what is now Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg.

House of Delegates.

“I guess our becoming lawyers was inevitable,” said his brother, who lives in Timonium. “Our father was a lawyer and our uncle founded the largest law firm in Indiana. I guess we felt if we didn’t go to law school, we would be ostracized from the family.”

After passing the Maryland bar examination in 1963, Mr. Donadio served as an assistant state’s attorney for Baltimore, working under Charles E. Moylan Jr., who was state’s attorney from 1964 to 1970.
