New FAA rules for outdoor RC pilots – WKBW

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WKBW) — Thanks to advances in technology and cheaper prices, it has become easy for people to own a remote-controlled Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) such as a drone, model airplane or helicopter.

However, problems with some reckless, amateur RC pilots flying drones into buildings, too close to aircraft, or illegally over sporting events has resulted in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enacting new rules for outdoor RC pilots as part of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018.

“Some of these new rules and regulations that are in place are because of a handful of people who are not following the rules,” said Tyler Dobbs, government affairs director for the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).

The AMA has represented model aircraft builders and fliers since the 1930’s.

The new rules include:

-Outdoor, recreational RC pilots must register with the FAA and put their FAA registration numbers on the outside of their drones, planes and helicopters.

Link to FAA registration site

-You must follow the safety guidelines of a community-based organization like the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)

-You can only fly for recreational purposes

-You must stay below 400 feet when in uncontrolled “Class G” airspace

-Do not fly in controlled airspace around and above airports (Buffalo has a large area of controlled airspace)

Coming in the future:

-Recreational pilots will be able to get authorization through the FAA’s online LAANC system

Swiss Model Airplane Glue will never replace Famo Hair Remover

A cinematic counterpart to word association, this trio of films came to mind spontaneously and without reflection while watching The Garden Store trilogy.

Cookoo Cavaliers (1940)

Hey, Jan Hřebejk — steal from the Stooges and you’re gonna get caught, I’m warning you! Where’d you get the idea to stage a beauty parlor scalping in Deserter? Nice try, but Swiss model airplane Glue will never replace Famo Hair Remover, the age-old follicle unfixative bottled here at the source in San Diego. (Visit YouTube if you won’t take my word for it.) Kudos to Hřebejk for properly punching the gag with a closeup. That’s more than can be said of Curlean photographer Jules White, who forced his poor Stooge starlets to suffer together in long shot. Seriously, somewhere in his formative years, Mr. Hřebejk must have been exposed to the work of Tři Stoogové. It’s a rite of passage for male chowderheads worldwide, no matter their country of origin.

Imagine Cary Grant’s shock when Irene Dunne, the shipwrecked wife he had long given up for dead, washes ashore just weeks after he’s taken a second bride (the haughty Ms. Gail Patrick) — and with Randolph Scott, her hunky castaway companion of seven years, in tow. (In reality, Cary and Randy would

What Uber Is Looking For in a Cost-Effective Urban Transport Vehicle

Despite Uber’s notoriously ambitious schedule, Director of Aviation Engineering Mark Moore says the company does not need any miracles to get its urban air mobility (UAM) business off the ground — just hard work.

There are, however, a lot of very specific things the rideshare giant is looking for in partners. Speaking at the Vertical Flight Society’s annual forum in Philadelphia, Moore described Uber as “the conductor of a symphony” whose job it is to bring everyone together and make sure they do their parts in concert. That means demanding a lot from key positions, like first cellist — err, manufacturer.

“It’s really important to understand that some of [the current electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing concepts] don’t make sense. Let’s be honest,” he said.

To “make sense” for Uber’s UAM mission, a proposal has to meet certain thresholds in feasibility, performance and cost, and they have to be realistic now.

“Direct operating cost tells all,” Moore said. “If you can’t show an economically feasible business case that can get to scale, then certainly we’re not interested.”

A major area of focus for Uber is batteries. Electric power replacing fuel and associated costs is a significant enabler to the UAM business model, and the company hired former Tesla battery lead Celina Mikolajczak to head up its efforts in that realm.

“Sure, there’s going to be really great battery

98-year-old WWII veteran takes airplane ride back in time

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A piece of history was flying at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport on Thursday.

One of the few remaining 1929 Ford Tri-Motor airplanes was taking off, and a World War II veteran was there to take flight in the model that got him into the sky for the first time.

Russel Hilding was 17 when he took his first airplane ride in the same model. At 19, he decided to become a pilot himself.

“I flew B-17s,” Hilding said. “Out of England, actually. Our targets were all in Europe, in Germany and France.”

At one point during his service, he was captured and taken to a prison camp after taking down more than a dozen targets.

After the war, the 98-year-old said he continued to fly for years until recently.

He knows there aren’t many planes, or guys, like him left out there.

“Yeah, not many. Old time, going by,” Hilding said.

That is why it’s important for the 90-year-old 18-cylinder engine to keep going.

“When history goes away, a lot of knowledge goes away with it,” volunteer Gregg Kaat said.

Russel has a lot of knowledge to pass on.

“I don’t know. Keeping active. Do what you like. Do it,” Hilding said.

While the future is still up in the air, Hilding is proof the landing is smooth.
