Dassault: Chinese Business Jet Market Is ‘Waking Up’ | Business …

Dassault Aviation is showing its flagship Falcon 8X this week at ABACE 2017 in Shanghai, and if the success of the 7X in China is any indication, the 8X should do quite well in this market. According to Jean-Michel Jacob, president of Falcon Asia-Pacific, Dassault already has one 8X under contract with a Chinese customer. “Prospects [for the 8X in China] look extremely good,” he said. “And there are many negotiations in progress already.”

In China, the market for business jets “is waking up,” said Jacob. “It was quiet for the last two years, but now there is some real movement. Not as good as five years ago, but certainly an active market. The driver is the economy of China. China is getting bigger and more global, and its investments are located far away.”

China is the second-largest market for the 7X, with 29 of the model currently in the country, although at one point there were nearly forty 7Xs in China. With a range of 11,950 m (6,450 nm), the 8X can fly from Shanghai to much of the U.S., including Chicago, all of Europe, most of Africa and all of Asia Pacific. “With one stop you can go to all of the places that you want,” said Carlos Brana, senior vice president of civil aircraft for Dassault Aviation.

“When you think of a given market, you try to meet the needs of the customer. The 8X can link the city pairs that the customer needs. [Our designs] are also based

Monitoring moose

DNR officials recently discussed the survey when it was announced that weather prevented some flights for the aerial survey, precluding the DNR from estimating moose abundance throughout its entire range in the western Upper Peninsula.

“From 1997 through about 2013, we seem to have an increasing moose population, and then in 2015, our estimate was quite a bit lower than what we had in 2013,” said Dean Beyer, wildlife research biologist based at the DNR’s Marquette Customer Service Center.

Beyer said moose are found in two areas in the U.P. apart from Isle Royale. The eastern U.P., encompassing more than 1,200 square miles in parts of Alger, Chippewa, Schoolcraft and Luce counties, is believed to have fewer than 100 moose, although no formal surveys have been done there, DNR staff said.

Most of the moose are in the west central U.P. — specifically, parts of Marquette, Baraga and Iron counties — and are populations that originated from the 1985 and 1987 reintroduction efforts that brought in 59 moose from Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario.

“These moose range over about 1,400 square miles, but most of the moose, 80 to 90 percent of them, actually occur in a core area of about half that size,” Beyer said.

The most common way for resource management professionals to estimate moose abundance in North America is through an aerial survey, he said.

“The basic idea is you get up in a airplane or helicopter, you fly over an area that has moose and you try

Pikesville man, 89, spends lifetime crafting model ships

You could call Jerome Smith a model citizen.

That’s because of the 89-year-old’s lifelong hobby: collecting and building models of classic boats and airplanes. The shelves, walls, ceilings and even the floor of the office in his Pikesville home are covered with hundreds of models, ranging from vintage World War II war ships, to replicas of warplanes from Japan, Russia, China, France and Britain.

“It’s a serious hang-up,” Smith said. “The next model I build will end up in the bathroom because there isn’t any more room.”

Smith’s passion for model building started early. He built his first model, a World War II C-47 military transport aircraft with the help of his grandfather.

Newport News Shipbuilding and several major naval installations. “If I had a nickel, I’d go out and buy a model and a tube of glue.”

Growing up in Baltimore, Smith made “recognition models,” which were made of wood and used during World War II to help pilots refrain from shooting down their own planes. He remembers going to what is now the Inner Harbor and Locust Point to admire the many boats docked there.

Smith graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and the University of
