Investigators seek help determining cause of fatal Lake Berryessa plane crash – KGO

Investigators need the public’s help to determine what went wrong moments before a plane crashed at Lake Berryessa. The plane was a single-engine light sport amphibious aircraft. The model hit the market less than two years ago.

ICON Aircraft created a lot of buzz in the aviation industry when it debuted the A5, which is part boat, all airplane but clearly, Monday’s crash is a setback for the Vacaville-based start-up.

NTSB investigators say their first priority is to get the ICON A5 to a secure location.

The aircraft was only in the air for 20 minutes before it crashed in a remote section of Lake Berryessa.

Inside were two ICON employees who died in the crash — the 55-year-old pilot Jon Karkow and his passenger 41-year-old Cagri Sever.

“We don’t have any known witnesses at this point in time to the accident sequence itself,” said NTSB investigator Joshua Cawthra. “We are looking for witnesses.”

In a statement, Icon CEO, Kirk Hawkins said in part: This was a devastating personal loss for many of us… the thoughts and prayers of our entire organization are with the families of both people on board, they were truly amazing individuals.

The A5, an amphibious, single-engine, two-seater sells for as much as $257,000.

ABC7 spoke to Hawkins last year. “Most airplanes are designed to haul things from A to B, and the pilot and the experience is an afterthought. The human experience and the pilot is the first thing that we think

China’s Jet to Rival Boeing Helped by US Technology

Of 15 non-Chinese suppliers contacted by Bloomberg about their involvement with the C919, eight — FACC AG, Honeywell, Parker Aerospace, UTC Aerospace Systems, Arconic, Liebherr-Aerospace, Eaton and CFM International — responded. All expressed confidence in the new aircraft and the potential for further collaboration in China.

China’s new C919 airliner: turbulence ahead

Last week, China’s answer to Airbus and Boeing, the Comac C919 commercial airliner, took its first flight ever, live on state-run TV. Not surprisingly, this event immediately prompted an outpouring of patriotism and self-satisfaction within the country. Local reporters gushed, and the state media celebrated the flight as “another fulfilment of [the China] dream.”

A Chinese aviation expert predicted that the plane would “rip a hole” in the Boeing-Airbus duopoly, and ordinary Chinese burst with pride. Even the foreign press heralded the accomplishment, The New York Times called the C919 a symbol of the “industrial might of an emerging superpower.”

So much hyperbole for such a rather workaday occurrence. Congratulations are certainly due to the Chinese aerospace industry for getting the C919 off the ground. But to steal a phrase from Dr Samuel Johnson, it is like a dog walking on its hind legs: it doesn’t matter how well he does it, one is impressed that he can do it at all.

No overnight success

The C919 narrow-body jet, initiated in 2008, seats 150 to 200 passengers, which puts it roughly in the same category as the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. China has invested $9 billion in the program, and Comac, China’s state-owned commercial jet consortium, claims to have over 550 orders for the plane.

Nevertheless, it is a long ways from a successful first flight to delivering a first-rate airliner

Sky over Vancouver Lake abuzz with model float planes | The …

Jason Webberley watched from the bank Sunday as his son, 9-year-old Landon, rolled, dipped, dove and spun his radio-controlled float plane over Vancouver Lake.

Jason grew up flying model planes as a kid, and he brought a few of his float planes to the lake, where the Clark County Radio Control Society held its annual float plane flying event.

He’s been with the club for eight years, and other members say he’s one of the better pilots. Landon’s been known to show the veterans a few things too, Jason said.

When Jason was growing up, his dad had a few plane models at the house, but he never really flew them.

“They just sat there, and I kind of stared at them as a kid. I think that’s how I got the bug,” he said. “These things are sitting there. Lets go fly them!”

He fell out of the hobby because of school, girls and other diversions, but he eventually picked it back up. He also became a professional pilot and has a full-size plane parked at Pearson Field.

“Went full circle,” he said.

Now, he’ll fly with his dad, Larry, who since picked up the hobby, and Landon, who’s been at the sticks since he was 5 and is also learning to fly real planes.

“You can see he’s learning every day,” said Jason, as Landon’s plane zipped by with a bit too much throttle. “He teaches me things sometime.”

The club usually flies at the county fairgrounds, where there’s a paved strip for planes to take off

Caitlyn Jenner on transitioning: ‘It was hard giving old Bruce up. He still lives inside me’

A few days before the release of The Secrets of My Life, Caitlyn Jenner’s memoir of her journey to transgender womanhood, she and her ex-wife Kris Jenner appeared together on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. The series is in its 11th year, but until 2015, Caitlyn was very much in the background, depicted as Bruce and as she writes in the memoir, as “a well–meaning but slightly doddering patriarch who has no life of his own and is subsumed by the women who surround him”. Now Caitlyn is centre-stage, giving her ex-wife a primer on gender identity while Kris maintains the rictus of someone who, for once, wishes the cameras weren’t rolling. When Kris asks Caitlyn if she will undergo gender confirmation surgery, Caitlyn flicks her hair and sucks in her cheeks. “Don’t even go down this road,” she says archly. “Because I’m not going to talk about it.”

What Jenner means, I think, is that she won’t talk about it at the Kardashian kitchen table, on Kardashian time, generating Kardashian ratings and revenue. For two seasons she had a perfectly good reality show of her own – I Am Cait – for that, and now there’s the publicity tour for the book. The night after our meeting, she will be interviewed by Tucker Carlson, who replaced Bill O’Reilly on Fox News and two weeks earlier informed a transgender guest on his show that a lot of trans women are

Frustum Inc. Founder and CEO to Present at IDTechEx 2017 – SYS

BERLIN, GERMANY — (Marketwired) — 05/08/17 — Frustum Inc., a pioneer in functional generative design and topology optimization software, today announced that its CEO and Founder, Jesse Coors-Blankenship, will be presenting at IDTechEx Show in Berlin on Thursday, May 11th. The session will illustrate advanced freeform geometry methods and how they enable topology optimization to be more fluid, faster to design and support more accurate printing through additive manufacturing. Coors-Blankenship’s presentation will also demonstrate this process for designers, providing examples of how this approach supports concurrent engineering principles.

“Design and manufacturing are undergoing a renaissance, which can be felt across just about every industry today. Airplane parts are being 3D printed, saving fuel costs and improving production. Designers are breaking free of clunky, angular design restraints to create more fluid, stronger and lighter components,” said Dr. Jon Harrop, director, IDTechEx. “Our mission is to bridge the innovation gap between leading technologies and the companies that need them, so it’s exciting to offer our attendees a look at the innovations driving this renaissance.”

Jesse Coors-Blankenship, CEO and Founder, Frustum

What:
Coors-Blankenship will discuss how technological advances in CAD integrated freeform geometry allowed for topology optimization to be introduced to the designer. Integrating traditional technologies and topology optimization in Frustum’s cloud-based software, Generate,
