Radio Control Club to mark 12th fly-in at Wetzel Park in New Haven

The Radio Control Club of Detroit will host its 12th annual Watts Over Wetzel All Electric Fly-In May 20 and 21 at Wetzel State Recreation Area in New Haven.

The event will open at 8:45 a.m. The public is welcome to view the air show at no cost.

Watts Over Wetzel has grown significantly over the past 12 years and has become one of southeast Michigan’s premier all electric fly-ins for radio-controlled model airplanes and helicopters, contest director John McCormick said.

RCCD events typically draw pilots from across the state and nation. Planes range from small to large scale, with wingspans measuring from 1 foot to 9 feet.

The club provides ample 110-volt electrical outlets and limited bleacher seating. Event organizers suggest pilots and spectators bring sun shades and lawn chairs. The event will also include barbecue food service, raffles, acrobatic and 3D flying demonstrations and on-site vendors.

Pilots must be current members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Landing fees for pilot aircrafts are $10 for one day and $15 for two days.

Wetzel State Recreation Area is located at 60619 Werderman Road. RCCD’s flying field is located at the park’s southern entrance, west of Wederman Road. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for access. For more information, go to rccd.org or facebook.com/wattsoverwetzel.

A field of their own: Farr Park Model Airfield in Baton Rouge opened for radio control flying enthusiasts

When a new development forced the Red Stick Radio Control Club to give up its longtime airfield on Burbank Drive three years ago, members of the organization couldn’t fly their model airplanes without first having to drive to special airfields in other communities.

Club members spent about a year trekking back and forth to Ramah, Breaux Bridge, Lake Charles and other locales with radio control airfields. They longed for a field of their own once again — a wish that came true in late 2015, when BREC officials offered a partnership that would allow the club to use a field on the property of Farr Park on River Road.

The Farr Park Model Airfield was officially opened at a ceremony Sunday. People gathered under a pavilion that club members recently finished building as Drew Rousseau, vice president of the club, piloted a blue-and-yellow model plane through the air to cut a ribbon suspended between two tall poles.

The grassy, 600-foot-long runway is named for Raymond David, who has been a member of the club for about 30 years, longer than anyone else. Pilots christened the runway Sunday with demonstrations of several tricky airplane maneuvers.

“This is an amazing site,” said Brandon Smith, director of special facilities for BREC. He said the Farr Park facility is the only radio control airfield in the BREC system and one of only three in the Baton Rouge region.

Smith said the field had knee-high grass about a year ago when the flying club first came to the site. BREC

  • In 1961, a US nuclear bomber broke up over North
Carolina farmland, killing three of eight crew
    members.
  • The accident dropped two powerful hydrogen bombs over
the area, but they did not detonate.
  • The military fully recovered one of the bombs.
  • While the second bomb was mostly recovered, one of its
nuclear cores is likely still buried in up to 200 feet of mud
    and dirt.

Disaster struck early in the morning of January 24, 1961, as
eight servicemen in a nuclear bomber were patrolling the skies
near Goldsboro, North Carolina.

They were an insurance policy against a surprise nuclear attack

Littlestar Plastics Inc. is investing to strengthen its niche as an integrated manufacturer of large technical components from high-performance polymers.

The Machesney Park, Ill., company has installed new injection presses, more CNC machining equipment and testing equipment.

Littlestar founder Phil Preston said his company has spent more than $750,000 in the past three years on the various programs. He said in a phone interview that his firm’s vertical integration is a good business model in the competitive injection molding market.
