Amelia Earhart was the first millennial hustler

Amelia Earhart was ahead of her time, and not just because she was a pioneering female pilot in the early 20th century. Her life was decidedly postmodern—the lady had more gigs than a millennial and reinvented herself as often as a Gen-Xer. She tried and failed and succeeded a lot for someone who lived only 40 years.

Earhart was born in Kansas in 1897 to parents with a difficult marriage. She was shuffled around in childhood and spent her adult life hustling to get her career off the ground. Still, she made her impossible dreams come true and turned herself into a role model, brand, and international celebrity. When her plane disappeared 80 years ago this week, on July 2, 1937, she was known not only as a pilot but as a feminist, a writer, a style icon, and a woman with a revolutionary approach to relationships.

If Earhart had a blog, you would follow it for the fashion, and the advice on being awesome, and she would have been happy to help. The pilot was intent on being a model for other women with a wanderer’s spirit.

Before that, however, she had to find her way. As a child, Earhart was a promising science student who planned to

EXCHANGE: Drones help local farmers, businesses – Herald

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) As Greg Mitts guides an aerial drone over farm fields he creates more than just pictures. He can provide farmers with detailed data that can locate bug infestations, plant diseases and harvest indicators.

“We create a 3-D model of the field that lets the farmer turn and twist and look at things, down to a half-inch detail of the crop itself,” Mitts said.

Mitts and his wife, Paige, founded Vision Quest in 2009. The couple, who split their time between Quincy and South Carolina, bought their first drone in 2013. Initially, they used the remote controlled aircraft to shoot video of hotels, real estate listings and businesses. They have traveled to all 48 of the continental United States doing that work.

Now they are doing more work for farmers.

“We believe that drone technology in agriculture will account for 80 percent of drone use in the future,” Paige Mitts said.

Drones — also known as unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs — are a hot item right now. The Consumer Technology Association said about 2.8 million drones were sold in the United States last year. Industry experts say as prices come down, they expect sales could top 5 million units this year.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been struggling to control drones for the last several years. In 2014 the agency ruled that drones could not be used for commercial purposes. At that time, Paige Mitts said the drone

Forget Cars, for One Spaniard the Autonomous Future Is Forklifts

In Burgos, a province in central Spain better known for archaeological digs and blood-sausages than for innovation, engineer Veronica Pascual is building automated vehicles. Not cars though, but fork-lifts, stackers and pallet trucks.

Pascual, a 38-year-old aeronautical engineer, owns Asti, a company that produces so-called AGVs, or automated guided vehicles — mobile robots used in factories and warehouses that don’t require human intervention to move.

Easybots operate during testing.

While tech companies from Alphabet Inc. to Uber Technologies Inc. are scrambling to make self-driving cars, far less attention is paid to other, less-sexy types of vehicles, opening a niche for companies like Asti, whose vehicles are used for moving a range of goods, from large packs of food boxes to 30 ton airplane parts.

The robotics service market is growing fast. Bank of America Merrill Lynch expects robots to be performing 45 percent of all manufacturing tasks by 2025, compared to 10 percent in 2015. The bank also estimates the industrial logistics, packaging and materials market will be valued at $31 billion by 2020.

Despite the opportunity, there are few firms trying to take over the factory floor.  “Most robotics investments still go on industrial equipment,” said Mehdi El Alami, a partner at consultancy Roland Berger, noting that only 2 percent is spent on logistics.

Caterpillar Inc. and General Electric Co. are among the few that have invested, having both backed Clearpath Robotics, a Canadian startup focused on developing autonomous vehicles that move goods around factories. Nissan Motor Co.and BMW are among the carmakers testing
