Perry teen earns wings prior to high school graduation

Logan Riley, 19, took his first solo flight in January. His goal: becoming a commercial airline pilot after college.

PERRY TWP.  It wasn’t model airplanes, action movies or video games that attracted a young Logan Riley to aviation. He caught the flying bug a bit later in life, as a sophomore at Perry High School.

Riley said an aerospace-engineering course at school that taught him about aviation history, science and mathematics helped to steer him toward the friendly skies.

“I had Lego planes as a kid, but really, it was school (that piqued my interest),” he said. “I was not really into planes until my sophomore or junior year. That’s when I decided I’d work on getting a pilot’s license.”

On May 23 — just days before graduating from high school — Riley, 19, earned a set of wings via a private pilot’s license, which is a major step in proceeding closer to his overall target of garnering a commercial license. The best part about flying, he said, is sharing a ride with family members and friends.

“I like flying other people and letting them have a new experience,” said Riley, who’s slated to attend Bowling Green State University this fall, where he plans to become an aviation and flight technology major.

Attaining his private flying license wasn’t a cinch, Riley said, adding that he would attend flight school courses after regular high school hours and on weekends. He also squeezed in a few lessons last

Jewish donor gives $1.3 million to preserving the memory of immigrants’ journeys to Israel

Immigrants’ stories to the Holy Land will live on thanks due to the generosity and foresight of Denver resident Jack Grynberg and his gift of $1.3 million to Jewish National Fund’s Atlit Detention Camp. Grynberg’s gift will be used for a new exhibit within a C46 airplane that will interactively tell the story of clandestine Jewish immigration by air, allowing visitors to feel as if they themselves were making the secret journey to Israel.

Immigration is a topic dear to Grynberg’s heart. At age 15, he and his family arrived in British Mandate Palestine with a British visa in 1946. He reflects on his immigration as a smooth and easy transition, as the British assisted the family with settling into their new life and home. Upon arrival, Grynberg, at 16, joined the Irgun and fought in the liberation of Jaffa as well as Yehudiya, (now the Ben Guirion Airport) during the War of Independence for which he was later decorated twice with medals from the State of Israel. Grynberg also served in the United States Army Research and Development Command specializing in Soviet Radioactive warfare. “I know how fortunate my family was to be welcomed into Palestine with open arms and recognize that others were not so lucky. This is why I want to tell the story of those whose immigration story included internment at Atlit,” said Grynberg in response to why this project is special to him.

The struggle for many began in 1939 when the British issued the “White Paper,”

Future of Air Travel: NASA Takes Major Step Toward Making Supersonic Commercial Flights a Reality

The speed of sound is 761 miles per hour. When a plane eclipses this speed, it creates shock waves that emit a loud cracking sound, called a sonic boom.

In February 2016, NASA teamed up with Lockheed Martin to try to fix this pesky problem, aiming to engineer a “low boom” X-plane that would pave the way for supersonic passenger travel. The team has now confirmed that the preliminary design for the Quiet Supersonic Transport (QueSST) is capable of breaking the sound barrier with nothing more than a muffled “thump.”

“Managing a project like this is all about moving from one milestone to the next,” said preliminary design manager David Richwine. “Our strong partnership with Lockheed Martin helped get us to this point. We’re now one step closer to building an actual X-plane.”

Whenever the X-plane does get built, its impact will be measured with flights over U.S. cities, giving regulators a sense of what measures would need to be put in place if the technology were to be used for commercial air travel. This would involve conducting ground tests as well as surveying citizens about their reactions to the “soft thump” the X-plane will make as it breaches the sound barrier. Such tests, however, are not expected to be conducted until 2021.

In February, a 9 percent scale model
