STEM METS Partners Airbus to Train Future Female Engineers

The girls at Methodist Girls’ High School were kept busy recently with a project that is designed to help them develop their skill set for future. Organised mostly in trios, these students in each group had a common goal- to assemble and fly a mini plane.

It was called the official launch of the Airbus Little Engineer workshop, a project which has trained more than 1,000 school students in Nigeria. The project is a part of Airbus Foundation’s youth development programme which took off in 2017.

It was discovered that the Nigerian school curriculum is yet to include subjects that can empower young students to build up exciting careers in science and technology in line with the global standards. These subjects include robotics and space exploration. Therefore, to encourage students to understand and embrace technology, the Airbus Foundation thus partners The Little Engineer and STEM METS Resources in training 30 students at Methodist Girls’ High School.

The students were aged between 13 and 15 years. They were taught to identity the

Optus hauls Telstra to court over ‘unlimited’ advertising

Optus is seeking Federal Court orders that would force Telstra
to withdraw advertisements that use the term “unlimited”, with Australia’s
second-largest telco arguing that the ads have the potential to mislead
consumers.

The Telstra advertising
campaign that launched in early May uses the slogan: “One word from Australia’s
best mobile network. Unlimited.” In addition to online ads, the national
campaign has incorporated billboard advertising.

The ads describe Telstra’s
network with “one word – ‘unlimited’,” Richard Lancaster SC, appearing for
Optus this morning, said. “Unlimited is an ordinary English word has a clear
ordinary English meaning – there are no limits,” he added.

The ad campaign launched concurrently
with Telstra’s $69/month “unlimited” data plan. The plan includes a quota of
40GB of full-speed data, following which download speeds are capped at 1.5Mbps.

“Data is king” in modern
telecommunications, Lancaster said, including the “speed of data, volume of
data”

“Unlimited is a powerful
word,” that speaks directly to concerns of modern consumers, he said.

“Telstra is putting forward
one word to describe its network,” Lancaster said. While “extraordinary or
fabulous” might be a kind of “teaser” to spur contact between Telstra and a
consumer, unlimited “is a word of clear meaning and that was the one word that
was chosen to describe the network.”

Learning without barriers: Riverpoint Academy, a STEM school, gives students individualized, independent study – The Spokesman

There are no classrooms at Riverpoint Academy in the Mead School District and that’s just the way the students and teachers like it.

The STEM school, located in a former motorcycle showroom at 11008 N. Newport Highway, has two large open spaces separated by a science lab, which is currently home to some glass beakers, rabbits, geckos, fish and a turtle named Sheldon who is the school’s unofficial mascot.

Students sit by themselves, in pairs or in groups, typing on laptops as they huddle around tables or sprawl in chairs. Teachers meet with students alone or in small groups to discuss ongoing projects. There are no bells, no rows of tables and no lectures.

“You will very rarely see a teacher in front of students and if you do it’s no more than 10 students,” teacher Matt Green said.

The school is highly individualized. Each student is required to take one core course each semester. There are only four core classes, so students end up taking the same class multiple times. But since students are given a lot of freedom in what they study, material does not get repeated, Green said.

“Typically, it’s a deeper explanation of things,” he said.

One of the core classes is Inventioneering, which includes everything from 3-D modeling to manufacturing to U.S. History to the humanities. The school of 170 students has eight teachers that teach each core course in pairs.

The back part of the school is a “maker space” full of equipment, including 3-D printers, laser cutters

Model airplane group promotes hobby with airport display

By Jonathan Gallardo

Gillette News Record

Via Wyoming News Exchange

GILLETTE — The next time you’re in the terminal at the Gillette-Campbell County Airport, look up.

Over the Indian riding bareback hunting a bison and the pronghorn grazing next to a windmill you’ll see vintage planes engaged in a dogfight straight out of World War I.

The Gillette Sage Hoppers RC Club spent several hours Friday cleaning and hanging five model planes to keep history alive, commemorate some of their former members and instill a love for airplanes in everyone who walks under them.

Several years ago, the club hung a model B-17 Flying Fortress and a P-51 Mustang, arguably the two most iconic U.S. planes from World War II. And Friday, the club was back at it again, hanging a Piper Super Cub, an L-4 Grasshopper and a Taube, an early Austrian plane.

But the two most recognizable planes are the Fokker Triplane and the Sopwith Camel, famously flown by Snoopy in his imaginary battles with the Red Baron.

Last summer, Jack Adsit, the group’s vice president, was at the funeral of Charlie Davis, a former member, when he came up with the idea of pooling money and buying the Piper Super Cub from Davis’ estate and donating the money to his widow. While at the funeral, Adsit spoke with member Dick Rindels about hanging his L-4 Grasshopper at the airport.

Rindels liked the idea.
