Young aspiring pilots hope for dream to take off at flight school in Changi

An eight-year-old boy controls a throttle to “fly” over the glittering Las Vegas skyline at night. Another 11-year-old boy “lands” his plane on the runway skidding off slightly, but steers it safely to a halt amid thundery showers.

The duo were among some 19 children who went soaring in a Cessna 172 flight simulator earlier this month during an introductory session in aviation, accompanied by their parents. They had signed up for the Basic Aviation Course with Aptitude Flying programme organised by SG Aviation Training.

A flight school set up in Changi Business Crescent last year by flying enthusiast Ron Malaravan, SG Aviation Training offers a range of introductory courses and more advanced preparatory courses for those who plan to get their pilot license overseas.

One of the instructors at the school, Captain Saravanan Sukomaran, said that the school seeks to nurture in young aviators a love for flying and to give them the skills to operate an aircraft. He added that students could develop other life skills in learning to fly, such as multi-tasking and decision-making, in addition to basic mathematical and physics concepts.

“I put them in a situation, maybe a bad weather or failure situation. After that they go into the decision-making, what kind of decisions are needed to overcome the problem,” he said.

The school occupies only three rooms on the first floor

Hand-Me-Down Plane That Crashed Reflects a Cuban Air Industry in Crisis

Mr. Farinas said that Cuban officials even decided in the past against working with the Mexican company, Damojh Aerolíneas, also known as Global Air, after the flight crew that came with the lease got lost in the air on one trip. But they eventually reversed the decision, he said, “probably out of desperation.”

Adel Yzquierdo Rodríguez, Cuba’s transportation minister, said Saturday that Cubana had been renting the plane for less than a month from Damojh, and that under the rental arrangement, the Mexican owner was responsible for the aircraft’s maintenance.

Analysts sometimes disagree about which is more to blame for Cuba’s troubled aviation industry: the American embargo of the island or the country’s own history of economic mismanagement.

Some experts say the sanctions have crippled the nation’s ability to gain access to the vendors and financing needed to get new aircraft. The Cubans themselves have made the case numerous times, blaming the decades-old sanctions for their aging planes, which include Russian-made aircraft that are difficult to find parts for.

“If it were not for the embargo, they would be able to access a robust capital market for financing Western aircraft,” said Samuel Engel, the senior vice president at ICF Consulting and an expert in the international airline industry.

But many analysts say that, while a process is involved, Cuba can indeed get access to such markets, as well as planes.

“The embargo does play a role in inhibiting business with Cuba, but

The Last Days of Time Inc.

It was once an empire. Now it is being sold for parts.

Time Inc. began, in 1922, with a simple but revolutionary idea hatched by Henry R. Luce and Briton Hadden. The two men, graduates of Yale University, were rookie reporters at The Baltimore News when they drew up a prospectus for something called a “news magazine.” After raising $86,000, Mr. Hadden and Mr. Luce quit their jobs. On March 3, 1923, they published the first issue of Time: The Weekly News-Magazine.

In 1929, the year of Mr. Hadden’s sudden death, Mr. Luce started Fortune. In 1936, he bought a small-circulation humor publication, Life, and transformed it into a wide-ranging, large-format weekly. Later came Sports Illustrated, Money, People and InStyle. By 1989, with more than 100 publications in its fold, as well as significant holdings in television and radio, Time Inc. was rich enough to shell out $14.9 billion for 51 percent of Warner Communications, thus forming Time Warner.

The flush times went on for a while. But then, starting about a decade ago, the company began a slow decline that, in 2018, resulted in the Meredith Corporation, a Des Moines, Iowa, media company heavy on lifestyle monthlies like Better Homes and Gardens, completing its purchase of the once-grand Time Inc. in a deal that valued the company at $2.8 billion. The new owner wasted no time in prying the Time Inc. logo from the facade of its Lower Manhattan offices and announcing that it

Second plane at ERAU shown to have crack in its wing – Daytona Beach News

An investigation into a crash that killed an Embry Riddle-Aeronautical University student and his flight instructor has found that another plane at the university had a crack in a bolt attachment within its wing, according to a federal aviation investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board issued a report this week that showed when inspectors examined a second Piper PA-28 aircraft, they found a fatigue crack that was similar to cracks found in the left wing of an ERAU plane that crashed April 4 after its wing fell off in mid-air. That crash killed Zack Capra, a 25-year-old Navy veteran taking his commercial pilot license test, and Federal Aviation Administration pilot examiner John S. Azma, a father of four.

The NTSB report did not say that the second inspected plane was part of ERAU’s fleet. But a search of FAA records showed the plane is registered to the university.

Investigators also examined nine planes of the same model and “similar vintage” from two flight schools in Florida and one in Texas. Evidence of cracks were not found in them, the report stated.

Embry-Riddle spokesman James Roddey said that the “NTSB investigation is ongoing, and as such, we have nothing to add to the recent investigative update.”

The school’s fleet of about a half dozen Piper PA-28 aircraft remains grounded, and it’s not clear whether they will ever be flown again.

According to the report, the second plane’s wings were removed, and an inspection of its left

A note about musical talents – Loveland Reporter

If you were to see me strolling down the sidewalk on a beautiful spring day at first glance you might think that I could possibly be a musician — or maybe even a newspaper columnist.

Come to think of it, you would most likely not think of either option.

But back to the musical portion of the program.

You may recall me mentioning in a column or two my brief career as a violinist. The problem with most juvenile “musicians” is that the sounds emanating from the instrument of choice rarely resemble music.

My long-suffering violin teacher, Mr. Forzene, however, resembled what one would imagine would be a comic book version of his line of work: frizzy hair, skinny, nervous (especially when he heard me clomping up his stairs) and very impatient.

As far as my personal ability, in a word I stunk.

I continued sawing away on my faux Strad until I turned 14 and wisely gave it up. “Thankfully” may have been a better word.

I worked after school and Saturdays at Roe’s Bakery, the only baker in town. He lived next door to us, and foolishly offered me employment at 60 cents an hour. This gave me adequate funds to have the ability to waste my money instead of my parent’s.

A couple of doors down from the bakery was a catch-all store, Dastrup’s, with a soda fountain and lots of odds and ends. They carried model airplanes, comic books, and, believe it or not, ukuleles and harmonicas. I wanted

Cyber minister tight-lipped on law enforcement access to encrypted comms

The government is not ready to reveal what will be considered “reasonable steps” to assist law enforcement and national security agencies under planned legislation to tackle the use of encrypted communications services by criminals.

“All good things come to those who are patient,” cyber security and law enforcement minister Angus Taylor told Computerworld in response to a question about what “reasonable steps” would constitute in the case of end-to-end encrypted services.

The government is also not prepared to release a timeline for the introduction of the legislation. “The focus is on getting it right,” Taylor told Computerworld at the CeBit Cyber Security Conference in Sydney.

“This is a big issue across the world,” Taylor said.

“We see encryption as crucial for cyber security,” the minister said. “I think I’m very privileged and in an unusual situation where I have two parts to my portfolio: Law enforcement and cyber security. If I was pure law enforcement I might take a less balanced point of view, but I’m both. I know encryption is absolutely crucial to protect our networks, to protect our devices to protect our data.”
