WHEN MICHAEL wanted his first model airplane in 1967, there wasn’t a single store in Ireland to fuel the 16-year-old boy’s newfound infatuation.

That was when the Limerick man journeyed east to Wales to meet a fellow collector to purchase his first tiny aircraft.

And 51 years later, Michael Kelly, aged 67, is now showcasing the world’s largest collection of model aircraft at Shannon Airport, where his passion for airplanes was first ignited.

The Farranshone man has displayed more than 1,500 items at the permanent collection, which features unique models, such as Al Capone’s Sunderland aircraft, and more familiar Irish models like Ryanair’s Boeing 737.

Explaining the long journey that led to the collection, Michael recalled:  “It started back when I was a little boy. My Dad, God rest him, used to bring me to Shannon Airport. When I saw aircraft I just fell in love with them. Whatever was between the airplanes and I, it was just magic.

“I’d be always talking about airplanes. I never stopped babbling on at home about them. I’d be at home playing with my ball and I might be lucky enough to hear a Viscount in the sky and, of course, that would blow my mind. And I do everything, I’d nearly try pull back the clouds to see them.”

He added: “Dad gave me the money to go to this lovely man in Wales. That was the beginning of my real journey. He (model aircraft dealer) had so many beautiful planes and I was amazed.

Before August, the U.S. Senate must decide on legislation that could potentially harm future aviators and aerospace professionals. Federal lawmakers must remember that protecting the model aviation hobby is good for everyone, not just for those like myself who love to fly model airplanes in New Mexico.

I am a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), a nationwide organization that has represented those who fly model aircraft for fun and educational purposes for more than eight decades. AMA safely manages a niche group of responsible hobbyists through Section 336 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, more commonly known as the Special Rule for Model Aircraft.

Unfortunately, some in Washington want to gut Section 336 and force new regulations on responsible model aviation hobbyists. I urge Congress and Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., to preserve this important provision, especially for the AMA clubs in New Mexico. Model aviation is too important to so many.

The death of military pilot during U.S. Air Force trials of a small combat plane considered key to the Afghanistan War is not expected to hamper the project or deter the service from future experiments with different types of weapons before buying them, a top general said Tuesday.

Senior Air Force officials are still planning to solicit bids for a new light-attack propellor plane from Textron’s Beechcraft and a Sierra Nevada Corp-Embraer team as soon as December,  Lt. Gen Arnold Bunch, the Air Force military deputy for acquisition, said Tuesday during a briefing at the Pentagon.

In the meantime, the Air Force has canceled flying portions of its experiment of the two planes following last month’s crash of an Embraer A-29 Super Tucano. The tests were supposed to continue throughout July. Instead, the Air Force will continue the tests using a “surrogate aircraft” in their place, Bunch said. Nonetheless, the crash is a setback for the effort, which now has the support from the military and Congress since initially being championed by a small group of Air Force officers more than a decade ago.

“We still believe light attack … is very much intertwined into and [is] part of the fabric of the National Defense Strategy, which wants us to build allies and partners and enable them to be able to do missions,” Bunch said. “We firmly believe that and are going to be open and transparent with them.”

Thee 38th Annual “A Capitol Fourth” Concert will start at 3 p.m. on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol Building.

Here’s what you need to know:

• Gates open at 3 p.m.
• It’s a free event, open to the public.
• The actual concert beings at 8 p.m.
• This year’s host is John Stamos.
• Live performances will be done by Jimmy Buffett and the Broadway cast of Escape to Margaritaville, The Beach Boys, Pentatonix, Andy Grammer, The Temptations, Luke Combs, Lauren Alaina, Chita Rivera, CeCe Winans, Joshua Bell, Renee Fleming and Kyla Jade.

U.S. Capitol Police have two entrances set-up where you will be screened:

• North (Senate) Side of Capitol Square: Third Street, NW, and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

People should expect to have their bags inspected.
