Trump in Bedminster: Model airplane clubs hope to end ban on their flights

CLOSE

The Broken Props Airplane Club could not fly during the Somerset County 4-H Fair this year because of President Donald Trump’s visit to Bedminster. The club members, however, still parted with valuable life lessons.

Model aircraft flyers throughout Central Jersey are hoping they could one day be allowed to fly while the president is in town.

Whenever President Donald Trump makes a visit to his private golf course in Bedminster, or anywhere else in the country for that matter, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for a 30-mile radius.

The TFRs grounds aircrafts as large as a Boeing 757 — like Trump’s own personal jet — and as small a model RC plane.

WHS Class of 1948 celebrate 70th reunion

By Kay Graf
Special to the Express

The Class of 1948 and their guests gathered June 26 at Putah Creek Cafe and had a wonderful time visiting and recalling some of the crazy things they did in high school. The table decorations were given as prizes to Joe Mayes for longest drive, Helen Horibe Hoy for the next longest drive, to Don Warren for his wife, and to Jack Graf who was President of the WHS Student Body the year they graduated. After lunch most of the group went next door to continue their visiting at Turkovich Winery. Some glasses of wine were enjoyed there and some bottles went home.

Each classmate shared answers to a class update questionnaire to provide an update for everyone.

Jack Graf of Winters has been married 66 years. He has six children. He was in the Marine Corps after OCS as a First

The 3-D Printing Playbook

In Brief

The Advances

Additive manufacturing technology has progressed, and its supplier ecosystem and the materials available have expanded. That means 3-D printing machines can now produce a much wider range of products—affordably and often in greater volume.

The Opportunities

The technology is finally ready to go mainstream: It is competitive with conventional manufacturing; can produce complex, high-performance structures; and can easily switch from making one item to making another.

The Implications

Companies should consider new business models and strategies to exploit the opportunities and defend themselves against rivals that use 3-D printing.

A new era in additive manufacturing, or “3-D printing,” is at hand, with major implications for adoption of the technology and for business models that companies can use in taking the plunge. In the three years since I last wrote about the field for HBR (“The 3-D Printing Revolution,” May 2015), additive’s growing capabilities, together with expansion in both the materials available and the supplier ecosystem, have made it possible to affordably produce a much broader range of things—from the soles of running shoes to turbine blades—often in much higher volumes. The technology provides an unprecedented ability to customize products and respond quickly to shifts in market demand. As a result, it is moving from limited applications, such as prototyping and making conventional machine tools, to a central role in manufacturing for a growing number of industries.

Strategically, that means additive is becoming a full-fledged competitive weapon: It can be used to hold on to market leadership, to dethrone a dominant player, or
