We’re starting with some information about a couple of upcoming shows in today’s 3D Printing News Briefs, followed by some business and aerospace news. Sinterit is bringing its newly launched material to formnext, while Materialise has announced what products it will be presenting. Registration is now open for AMUG’s 2019 Education and Training Conference. Moving on, Sciaky sold its EBAM and EB Welding System to an aerospace parts manufacturer, while final assembly has been planned for the Airbus Racer, which features a 3D printed conformal heat exchanger. The Idaho Virtualization Lab is a leader when it comes to 3D printing dinosaurs, and the recently released movie First Man used 3D printed models during filming.

Desktop SLS 3D printing company Sinterit has launched a new material – PA11 Onyx – which it will be bringing to formnext next month, along with its Lisa and Lisa 2 Pro 3D printers. According to Sinterit, this is first powder that’s ready for use in desktop SLS 3D printers, and it delivers excellent thermal, chemical, and abrasive resistance, along with better flexibility and impact resistance. PA11 Onyx is a high performance, lightweight, polyamide-11 bioplastic produced from plant-based renewable resources. In addition, the material also has high elongation at break, which means that durable finished products, like a military glass case and custom casings, can be opened and closed thousands of times without getting damaged.

Craig Breedlove’s Quest For The Land Speed Record

Arfons and Breedlove returned to Bonneville for the 1964 season.

“And, at this point, Craig is becoming afraid,” Hawley says. “He’s becoming frightened. The stress, the strain is all getting so intense. So when he heads back again with the goal to go 500 mph, he really has a premonition that he’s gonna get killed.”

On Oct. 2, a car designed by Art Arfons’ brother reached 413 mph. Three days later, Art himself topped out at 434. Eight days after that, Breedlove pushed the record to 468. But he knew Spirit of America, with a new jet engine that featured an afterburner, could go even faster.

Which brings us back to Breedlove’s 526-mph, record-setting run on Oct. 15, 1964, when he rocketed past his astonished crew.

With no brakes or emergency parachute and very little steering, Breedlove cut the engine. But he was still going more than 200 mph by the time he hit that embankment and launched into the air over an evaporation pond.

DeLand airport businessman arrested, accused of gutting … – Daytona Beach News

A DeLand airport business owner is accused of siphoning fuel and stealing parts worth $55,000 from a plane that didn’t belong to him, according to the DeLand Police Department.

The investigation also revealed that Lippo has removed other parts from other planes and has charged customers for services and repairs to aircraft that were never completed, police said.

As of Wednesday, Joseph Lippo, 60, has been charged with multiple counts of grand theft. He was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail and released after posting $15,000 bail, records show. Lippo was reached at his business Thursday and declined comment.

Detectives are still investigating to see if Lippo committed other crimes, city spokesman Chris Graham said.

“During the investigation, it was discovered that the owner and operator had been removing functional parts from planes, installing them in other planes and charging the owners for replacement parts in the original planes,” according to a police statement.

Lippo also is suspected of victimizing more customers by charging them for services he never provided, possibly defrauding customers in the tens of thousands of dollars, police said.

DeLand police began investigating in July after a Edd Conn reported to them that Lippo, owner and operator of JL Aircraft Services, had removed parts from his plane without his permission, according to a police report. Conn told police he found out about it after someone from an airplane supply store in Fort Lauderdale called to tell Conn he had a radio that belonged to him, the report stated.

On airplanes, personal space is a vanishing commodity

Colder weather brings with it one certainty for air travelers: the start of space wars.

You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? Sweaters, jackets and bags overpacked with holiday presents make small economy seats feel even smaller. The disagreements start with the overhead luggage compartment and extend to the space under and between the seats.

It’s no secret that space is at a premium. The situation is so bad that the government decided to regulate the minimum size requirements for seats in the FAA Reauthorization Bill passed earlier this month.

A survey by the market research firm CivicScience finds that passengers are deeply divided about personal space on planes. For example, it reported that 78 percent of U.S. adults agree that the window seat has control of the window shade. Only 21 percent of adults surveyed said the middle seat has the right to both armrests; 53 percent said it does not. Interestingly, of the 21 percent who think the middle seat has the right to both, the majority are men. (The correct answer in just a moment.)

Girls in Aviation promotes STEM among girls ages 8-17

Girl power was front and center at the Girls in Aviation Day at the Culpeper Air Fest Saturday morning.

More than 100 young women, ages 8-17, toured booths at the Airport prior to the 19th annual Air Fest – learning about professions in aviation.

Kelly Murphy, Director of Communications and Editor-in-Chief for Aviation for Women magazine, smiled broadly as she greeted the girls lining up at the 8:30 sessions. This marked the fourth year for Girls in Aviation Day – held internationally – but hosted for the first time at the Culpeper Air Fest. The girls learned about various professions in aviation – engineering, pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers, Coast Guard and more from a staff of volunteers.

“There are so many job opportunities in aviation, not just a need for pilots – mechanics, air traffic controllers, aircraft engineers and what we want to do through Women in Aviation is to reach out to girls ages 8 to 17 and let them see all the opportunities,” Murphy said.

Women in Aviation provides $500,000 in scholarships each year to students going to college to study disciplines associated with aviation. Murphy said the Girls in Aviation Day focused on networking and mentoring, helping match girls interested in certain fields with professionals.

“Our day is dedicated to having all these different stations where they can meet female engineers, pilots, mechanics and female drone pilots,” Murphy said. “It’s about them seeing positive role models and being able to ask questions.”
