Inventing a new way to travel

A robust and proven FEA pre- and post-processing solution, accessible to businesses of all sizes, Lisa Airplanes chooses Siemens PLM Software’s Femap and NX Nastran to certify its new two-seater plane, the Akoya

In France’s Savoie region at the heart of the French Alps, a team of enthusiasts has embarked on an ambitious, far-sighted project: creating an all-terrain recreational aircraft that can take off and land as close as possible to its points of departure and arrival, whether on land, water or snow. A plane that is concurrently high-performance, comfortable, attractive and easy to fly. One with an innovative design that rewrites the traditional codes of the aeronautics rulebook, no less.

This is how the Lisa Airplanes company came about back in 2004, with the ambition of revolutionising recreational aviation and inventing a new way to travel. To advance its vision, Lisa Airplanes set aside all preconceptions to start afresh and devise a genuinely innovative plane.

“We started with a sheet of blank paper,” recalls Benoit Senellart, one of the three founders of Lisa Airplanes. “We were disappointed by the light aviation offering which, in our eyes, was lacking in terms of innovation. In fact, it was by observing racing yachts, in particular the Hydroptère, a sailing hydrofoil, that the idea came to a head: if a boat can fly, why can’t a plane use this technology to take off from water?”

Innovation at its heart

Hence the concept: fitting the plane with ailerons that lift the fuselage off the water, but without compromising its

Education and enjoyment part of Florida International Air Show – Sarasota Herald

Performers included a warbird review, fighter jets, aerobatic flying and the Tuskegee Airmen exhibit.

PUNTA GORDA — Rusty Reynolds was interested in seeing 75 years of aviation history all in one spot. His children were impressed with the bounce houses.

It was a win-win situation for adults and children at the Florida International Air Show that began Friday and ended with a World War II aircraft review, aerobatic air shows and fighter planes, from barnstormers to jet fighters.

“I was impressed with the skydivers,” said Reynolds, who drove up from Fort Myers. “They have the nerve that I don’t.”

Angela Bedillion of Cape Coral and friends had four children among them. They were given free tickets to the show, and most of their group had never seen an air show before.

“Our husbands installed the fence and they gave us tickets,” Bedillion said. “It was exciting. They loved seeing the airplanes and the MiG.”

The MiG is a Russian fighter aircraft with uniquely rear-swept wings and a fiery jet engine. They were built beginning in 1949 and used prominently during the Korean War.

The name MiG comes from the jet’s design bureau in Russia, Mikoyan-Gurevich.

Tuskegee Airmen

Sarasota resident George Hardy, 93, a Tuskegee Airmen in 1943, says he reminds children who talk to him at air shows the importance of education. He said the first guys who went to Tuskegee were all college graduates.

“Learning is the thing I got out of Tuskegee Airmen,” he said. “I always tried to improve myself to be prepared for what’s

First responders get leg up through drone use

MAURICE RIVER, N.J. (AP) — Joe Sterling has spent 36 years as a volunteer with the Leesburg Fire Department, but he’s recently taken on a new title — the township’s very own licensed drone pilot.

The township is the first in Cumberland County to have a drone team ready to respond to emergencies. The $9,400 DJI Inspire 1, complete with a thermal-imaging camera, will make responding to emergencies a whole lot easier and safer.

The drone can be deployed for active-shooter situations, hazmat, fires and woodland and marine rescues, going where first responders can’t to get a bird’s-eye view of an emergency.

“With this model here, it allows you to do a lot of different things with it,” Sterling said, pointing to the different parts of the black-and-white remote-controlled aircraft.

How Danny Clarke Turned His Family Eyecare Practice Into A $3 Million Business Focused On Employees

It’s a family affair: Danny Clarke (left), Elizabeth Clarke and Calvin Clarke.Courtesy Clarke Eyecare

For Danny Clarke, who followed his father to optometry school at the University of Houston, the business side of being a doctor is even more interesting than the science. “My dad relied on crisis management,” he says. “I wanted to do things differently.”

In 2010 when he bought Clarke Eyecare, his father’s Wichita Falls, Texas, optometry practice, he decided to overhaul the way the business was run. “The turning point was me changing my attitude about the employees in the practice,” he says. “Instead of thinking of myself as an employer, I started thinking of myself as a developer of people.”

To do that, he introduced open book management, an approach pioneered by Jack Stack, the Springfield, Missouri-based entrepreneur and consultant who wrote the 1992 business bestseller The Great Game of Business. That meant setting aside an hour a week for “great game huddles,” where Clarke shared financial information with everyone on staff and invited employees to suggest ways to improve performance. In 2012 he started opening the office an hour late on Monday mornings to add a second weekly huddle.

As staffers learned about the company’s balance sheet, they felt motivated to improve the bottom line, says Clarke. In one instance, an optician caught a price increase from a vendor and took it upon herself to negotiate a new contract and adjust the retail price for the vendors’ frames. Another staffer made an appointment-scheduling
