Racin’ Granny Just Won’t Stop

Cheryl Kaiser’s 1929 Ford Model A Drag Truck

Take a look at Cheryl Kaiser, and you’d never guess she is a drag racer. A petite woman in her 60s, Cheryl and her partner, Steve Morley, drove their 1929 Ford Model A pickup truck 900 miles from Arnold, Missouri to HOT ROD Drag Week’s starting point in Commerce, Georgia. “I’m the guy that works on this thing, and she drives it,” Steve says. “She built the engine though!”

“With guidance,” Cheryl interjects. “He told me what to do, and I did it all.”

Despite its paint job with “Grenade Racing Engines” signage on the doors, Cheryl affectionately calls the Model A “The Little Blue Truck.” The grenade is a bit of a good luck symbol- a nod to Steve’s early years of building project cars. “I’d build something, and it would just be junk, and I’d say ‘Well, this is gonna be a grenade, it’ll never live.’ And then it would live forever. So I just started naming all my projects grenades.” A pilot friend of Steve’s did the artwork, depicting a plane similar to those he flew.

The Model A was a complete rust bucket when they bought it 10 years ago. After hacking off and tossing a bunch of the modifications to the body and frame the previous owner had done, Steve added a

DeLand airport businessman arrested, accused of gutting customer’s plane – Daytona Beach News

A DeLand airport business owner is accused of siphoning fuel and stealing parts worth $55,000 from a plane that didn’t belong to him, according to the DeLand Police Department.

The investigation also revealed that Lippo has removed other parts from other planes and has charged customers for services and repairs to aircraft that were never completed, police said.

As of Wednesday, Joseph Lippo, 60, has been charged with multiple counts of grand theft. He was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail and released after posting $15,000 bail, records show. Lippo was reached at his business Thursday and declined comment.

Detectives are still investigating to see if Lippo committed other crimes, city spokesman Chris Graham said.

“During the investigation, it was discovered that the owner and operator had been removing functional parts from planes, installing them in other planes and charging the owners for replacement parts in the original planes,” according to a police statement.

Lippo also is suspected of victimizing more customers by charging them for services he never provided, possibly defrauding customers in the tens of thousands of dollars, police said.

DeLand police began investigating in July after a Edd Conn reported to them that Lippo, owner and operator of JL Aircraft Services, had removed parts from his plane without his permission, according to a police report. Conn told police he found out about it after someone from an airplane supply store in Fort Lauderdale called to tell Conn he had a radio that belonged to him, the report stated.

Model Aviators fly high in Chino Valley on Sept. 22

For more than three decades, a club of model aviators have been taking to the skies around Yavapai County and since 1998, they’ve called their field in Chino Valley home.

They call themselves the Chino Valley Model Aviators and currently there are 143 members involved in the club and that number grows every year, said Secretary Marc Robbins. While there may be a lot more older guys in the club than there are youth, there have been active efforts to get young people involved, Robbins said.

“We offer free instruction to younger people,” he said. “It’s a tough thing nowadays, there’s a lot of other distractions for young kids.”

One such distraction is video games which might actually be beneficial towards model aviation, Robbins said. Kids who play a lot of video games have good hand-eye coordination and could become proficient at remote control airplanes, he said.

An additional incentive for younger people is that student membership into the club is $10 per year while the standard is $75 per year, Robbins said.

The club’s field, located at 2025 Santa Fe Trail, is an 800 foot by 60 foot runway that runs east to west, according to the club’s website.

All pilots must follow the Academy of Model Aeronautics

The UN’s Devastating Climate Change Report Was Too Optimistic

A decade ago, the “father of global warming”—the first scientist to sound the alarm on climate change in the 1980s to the US Congress—announced that we were too late: the planet had already hit the danger zone.

In a landmark paper, James Hansen, then head of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, along with seven other leading climate scientists, described how a global average temperature above 1°Celsius (C)—involving a level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere of around 450 parts per million (ppm)—would lead to “practically irreversible ice sheet and species loss.” But, they added, new data showed that even 1°C was too hot.

At the time the paper was issued in 2008, atmospheric concentrations of CO2 were around 385 ppm. This is “already in the dangerous zone,” explained Hansen and his colleagues, noting that most climate models excluded self-reinforcing amplifying feedbacks which would be triggered at this level—things like “ice sheet disintegration, vegetation migration, and GHG [greenhouse gas] release from soils, tundra, or ocean sediments.”

Such feedbacks constitute tipping points which, once triggered, can lead to irreversible or even runaway climate change processes.

According to Hansen and his co-authors, these feedbacks “may begin to come into play on time scales as short as centuries or less.” The only viable solution to guarantee a safe climate, they wrote, is to reduce the level of greenhouse gases to around 350 ppm, if not lower.

Today, we are well in breach of

Flying Singapore to New York on SQ22 the inaugural world’s longest flight

The plane:

An Airbus A350-900XWB but this plane has even more initials — it’s a ULR standing for ultra-long range. Singapore Airlines has the first of this new model for its world-beating Singapore – Newark/New York service. This aircraft has a modified fuel system that allows an additional 24,000L of fuel at take-off, for a total of 165,000L, without the need for additional fuel tanks. And with a few aerodynamic tweaks that means it can stay airborne for 20 hours, it did the inaugural flight in a canter. The XWB bit stands for extra-wide body. More vertical sidewalls give the cabin a bit of extra width.

Class

: Business. This plane is a bit different in that it is entirely premium. There are 67 Business Class seats, 94 Premium Economy and no Economy. It’s aimed squarely at higher-yield passengers who want to fly nonstop between two global financial hubs.

Price: Booked at short notice, a one-way BusinessClass fare between Singapore and New York is $7500and a Premium Economy fare is $3300. The plane is a premier aircraft and you’re paying a premium for no inconvenient stops. The route was popular with corporates when it operated between 2004 and 2013 (using an older model, less-efficient plane) and the airline is confident it now has the right aircraft to make it pay this time around.

Top notch: Grant Bradley aboard SQ22, Singapore Airlines flight.
