Robots and software are improving warehouse ROI

Faced with a new normal of double-digit e-commerce growth, supply chains are tapping into capital wells to help rise to the challenge.

Target announced last year it was investing $7 billion, partly to retrofit 600 stores and to improve its digital presence. UPS, meanwhile, plans to invest $20 billion over the next three years in automation projects and equipment, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The two companies are not alone in their initiatives. They are part of a trend – one which sees companies investing capital in automation and software to boost productivity and fulfillment capacity.

This year, companies budgeted more for capital spending on materials handling, according to the Warehouse and Distribution Center survey. At least $30,000 more, in fact: The average for those with a pre-approved capital budget was $457,640, compared to the $422,260 allocated last year.

With the year almost over, however, a question remains: How did companies deploy those resources?

Robots make their case

Faced with low unemployment, companies are increasingly investing in automation.

Robotics can yield high returns, as the technology can often be implemented without drastic changes to infrastructure. Recent studies suggest adoption is on the rise, too.

Take Chuck, a collaborative robot produced by 6River Systems, which acts as a mobile bin for pickers. The robot is paired with a human worker in the warehouse, who fills Chuck’s bin over time. Once the bin is full, the robot goes to the packaging area, and the picker is paired with a new robot. The

These Watches Are Made from Recycled WWII Fighter Planes

RCL Exclusive

And they tell time, too!

Lots of contemporary pilot’s watches are “inspired” by timepieces, wars and aviators of yore.

But how’d you like a timepiece actually made from a WWII Spitfire fighter plane — battle scars and all? Because that’s exactly what you get with the new RJM collection from REC.

But first, a little history lesson.

The British Supermarine Spitfire was the most celebrated fighter plane of World War II — if you’ve seen Dunkirk, that’s what Tom Hardy glided down to the beach behind enemy lines. Director Christopher Nolan shot the dogfight scenes with three: two Mark Is and a Mark V version, all provided by the Imperial War Museum. After 70-plus years, 53 remain airworthy. Many others found a home in museums.

Others rest in Russian forests. Several Allied nations flew Spitfires, including the Soviets (who lost many to friendly fire, due to visual similarities with a German plane). One of those planes crashed to the ground following a dogfight near

University of Nottingham and Air Race E partner on first electric race airplane

The University of Nottingham (UK) and Air Race E last week announced a partnership to develop the first electric race airplane.

A new integrated plug-and-play electric motor, battery and power electronics system will be designed and retrofitted into an existing gasoline-powered Air Race 1 plane in workshops at the University. The prototype race airplane will help shape the model and rules for Air Race E, which is set to launch its inaugural race in 2020.

The University is investing £13 million (US$17 million) in the Beacons of Excellence program which is aimed at championing field-leading responses to global challenges, including sustainable travel.

With transport on the vanguard of a green revolution the two parties will drive the discovery and translation of new materials, components and technologies in order to change the game within electrified propulsion.

Air Race E will see electric airplanes racing directly against each other on a very tight circuit just above the ground and at speeds faster than any land-based motorsport. Formula Air Race planes, classified as “experimental”, are the only airplanes in the world designed specifically for racing and built to a specific race formula.

The demand for speed, performance and power management under the rigors of a competitive race environment provide suitable conditions for the development and promotion of cleaner, faster and more technologically advanced electric motors. Electric aviation is one of the fastest developing technological areas and is seen as the third generation of aviation.

Air Race E will be a similar format to the sport known as

Latrobe historical display, WW II ‘Homefront’ program slated for Veterans Day weekend – Tribune

Updated 9 hours ago

Latrobe citizens and industries stepped up in support of troops during World War II, a unifying chapter from the town’s past that will be revisited in a Latrobe Area Historical Society program.

The slide show “Homefront: Latrobe in WWII” will be screened at 10:30 a.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the historical society headquarters, 416 Weldon St., Latrobe. Admission is free.

Like shows the society has presented on other topics, the “Homefront” program combines period images from the society’s archives with information its members have collected and researched.

Society President Mary Lou Townsend worked on the program when it originally was presented about a decade ago. “People have asked for a repeat,” she said, noting Veterans Day weekend is an appropriate time to revisit it.

Compared to many other towns’ homefront contributions, “Latrobe ended up being even more involved, because of the industrial side of it — what the companies in Latrobe were doing and producing for the war effort,” Townsend said.

“Kennametal had just started in 1938, and World War II gave them a jump start on expansion,” she said. “They had huge contracts during the war.

“Acme Die made explosives that went into anti-aircraft guns. Stupakoff Ceramics developed a proximity fuse that was useful in arming against the kamikaze planes.”

Local citizens also kept their eyes turned to the skies, watching for any enemy craft

That’s So Minnesota: Watching airplanes at MSP Airport

MINNESOTA – Aviation is fascinating. I’ve always been in awe of this mode of transportation since I was a little girl. I can thank my father for this interest because he’s always been an aviation fanatic as well. When I was growing up I’d stop by his office and look at the model airplanes he had on his desk.

No, my father wasn’t a pilot. In fact, he didn’t work in aviation at all. He worked at a bank. But still, when he and I would fly somewhere on vacation, he’d open the placard in our seat and tell me all about the Airbus or Boeing jet we were on. I was captivated.
