Iconic songwriter Jimmy Webb talks Maine, music and more

When we began what was originally scheduled to be a 20-minute interview, he told me how he came to fall in love with Maine. More than 40 minutes later, we had covered nearly an entire Jeopardy-board of subjects, ranging from model planes and ships to books, New England’s opiate problem, sobriety, bullying and a topic near to Webb’s heart – the art of storytelling.

According to Webb, it was more than 20 years ago, when he was going through what he described as a very difficult divorce, that he set out with his four youngest children (three boys and a girl) and drove to Heald Pond in Center Lovell, where his friend Danny Ferguson has a home.

“It was a refuge for me and the children to sort of get away from the bad vibes,” Webb remembered. “That’s how it started. I wrote a good piece of my book ‘Tunesmith’ there (Webb’s 1998 book ‘Tunesmith: Inside the Art of Songwriting’ is considered one of the ultimate guides for aspiring songwriters). It seems like I’ve always been working on a project in the summer in Maine, including producing Carly Simon.”

Simon’s 1997 album “Film Noir” was co-produced by Webb, who also provided vocals, piano and orchestration. The collaboration was filmed for an AMC special coinciding with the record’s release.

Last year, Webb published what he hopes was just the first installment of his memoirs, titled “The Cake and the Rain,” an absorbing chronicle of his life in and out of the music industry up to

Boeing issues new guidance after deadly crash

Boeing has issued operational guidance to airlines as investigators continue to probe what happened to Lion Air Flight 610, which crashed into the Java Sea last month, killing all 189 passengers.

In a statement on Tuesday, the airline manufacturer said it had issued an “Operations Manual Bulletin” advising airline operators how to address erroneous cockpit readings.

A spokesperson for Boeing wouldn’t disclose to CNN whether the directive was issued to operators of all Boeing aircraft, or just those who fly 737 MAX 8 planes, the same model as Flight 610.

The directive points operators “to existing flight crew procedures to address circumstances where there is erroneous input from an AOA sensor,” the statement said. “Whenever appropriate, Boeing, as part of its usual processes, issues bulletins or makes recommendations regarding the operation of its aircraft.”

An AOA, or angle of attack, sensor is a vane that sits outside of the aircraft and gives pilots a visual reading of the plane’s angle of attack — or “the angle between the oncoming air or relative wind and a reference line on the airplane or wing,” according to Boeing.

“It is very important because it tells them if the plane is flying at too high angle of attack, which can lead to an aerodynamic wing stall (loss of lift),” said aviation analyst and editor-in-chief of Airlineratings.com, Geoffrey Thomas.

Boeing said that the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee had “indicated that Lion Air flight 610 experienced erroneous input from one of its AOA (angle of attack) sensors.”

Tockr D-Day C-47 Watch

When it comes to aviation-influenced watches, a new kid on the block has created some waves on social media and among enthusiasts. Tockr has released a new watch for its C-47 Collection that is both unique and goes towards a good cause. The Tockr D-Day C-47 Limited Edition is a collaboration with the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) to donate money towards the restoration of a historic C-47 aircraft known as That’s All, Brother – the airplane known for leading the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Each watch utilizes salvaged material from the aircraft to create the dial and a portion of the proceeds will fund the nonprofit’s Historic Preservation Mission in restoring the plane.

As a quick note, this isn’t the first time we’ve covered watches that use salvaged metals for watch dials and other parts – the Danish brand REC, for example, is more or less based on this concept. However, the Tockr D-Day C-47 instantly reminds me of the Oris Big Crown D.26, a similar collaboration with Hangar 13 for a limited edition watch and aircraft preservation. I’m enthused to see watch brands stepping up for causes, and this is a great fit for Tockr being newer to the industry and an aviation-themed brand. Collaborations are great and all, but collaborations for charitable causes are becoming increasingly

Air Race E: 250 MPH Electric Airplane Racing Nears Reality

World’s first all-electric airplane racing championship.

Air Race Events, headquartered in Dubai, in partnership with the University of Nottingham, is launching Air Race E, an electric version of the Air Race 1 series.

It will be the first and only all-electric airplane racing championship with the first event scheduled for 2020.

It seems that it will be a pretty spectacular, quick, action-packed race with speeds of 400 km/h (250 mph) around a tight circuit just 1.5km end-to-end – a similar format to the sport known as ‘formula one pylon air racing’.

8 airplanes are to race directly against each other simultaneously. The University of Nottingham will develop electric versions of the existing petrol-powered Air Race 1 planes.

“A new integrated ‘plug and play’ electric motor, battery and power electronics system will be designed and retrofitted into an existing petrol-powered Air Race 1 plane in workshops at the University. The prototype race airplane will help shape the model and rules for Air Race E, which is set to launch its inaugural race

Wings N’ Wheels at Minter Field Photo Gallery

SHAFTER, California — After graduating from college, I immediately listed my textbooks for sale, emptied my book bag, and performed a digital purge on my computer.

My narrow way of thinking in those days convinced me that an education began and ended in the classroom. Now that I am older, I realize how misguided I was. Education is a lifelong affair whether be it from talking to complete strangers, reading a novel, or attending a car show.

When I attended Wings N’ Wheels at Minter Field, I did not expect more than to photograph every car I possibly could and to get on with my weekend promptly after. My assumption proved to be wrong and it turned out to be the best car show I have attended to date.

Small towns are not only charming but from time to time they can have intriguing information stored in their history. Take for instance the town of Shafter which began as a loading dock operated by the Santa Fe Railroad prior to incorporating in 1938. Three years later an airport originally called Lerdo Field opened in the midst of World War II. This airport would later be renamed Minter Field Army Airfield and when operations began during WWII approximately 7,000 troops were stationed there.

The gates were just opening to the general public when my nephew and I arrived at Minter Field for the Wings N’ Wheels car show. As we entered the venue I scanned the
