MIT Engineers Fly Star Wars-inspired Plane with No Moving Parts

Scientists at the Massachusetts University of Technology have built the first-ever silent airplane with no moving propellers or jet turbines and requires no fossil fuel.

The plane with no moving parts is powered by an “ionic wind,” or electro-aerodynamic thrust. The movement of ions, i.e. electrically charged atoms or molecules, provide momentum to the ionic wind.

The silent plane’s wingspan is just five meters. MIT team says one day, the technology could party propel passenger planes, or part of a fuel-efficient hybrid model.

“This is the first-ever sustained flight of a plane with no moving parts in the propulsion system,” says Steven Barrett, associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT. “This has potentially opened new and unexplored possibilities for aircraft which really quieter, mechanically simpler, and do not emit combustion emissions.”

A new MIT plane is propelled via ionic wind. Batteries in the fuselage (tan compartment in front of plane) supply voltage to electrodes (blue/white horizontal lines) strung along the length of the plane, generating a wind of ions that propels the plane forward.

MIT predicts that in the near-term, the ion wind propulsion system could be used to fly silent drones. The ion propulsion when paired with more conventional combustion systems could create more fuel-efficient, hybrid passenger planes, and other large aircraft.

The silent airplane with no moving parts is detailed in the journal Nature. It’s astounding to learn that the concept of ionic wind dates back to the 1920s.

DAHER SOCATA TBM 930: Family airplane

Photo: www.tbm.aero

In the business aviation section, we pay great attention to the innovations of the international aviation industry and try not to miss any news about the latest models of popular business jets and helicopters. But there is one class about which we write quite rarely – these are modern “family airplanes”, which embody advanced technologies, optimal possibilities and comfort.

On April 5, 2016, the French company DAHER introduced the new single-engine turboprop aircraft TBM 930, which is an updated version of the model TBM 900.

DAHER TBM 930 was developed based on the TVM 900 model, but with one big difference – the avionics system with a touchscreen display in the cockpit of the Garmin G3000, which added the “30” to the digital index of the new model. Because of this, it is now the fastest in the class of single-engine turboprop aircraft with a maximum cruising speed of 611 km / h at flight level 280 (under ISA conditions). This is a completely new class of very fast turboprop aircraft, combining the high speed of a jet airliner with the efficiency and economy of an airplane with a turboprop engine. The most attractive features of the model in the eyes of the owners are the ability to land at small regional and mountain airports with short runways, long range and payload.

Fifty-Two Reasons

When we were kids, card games were always an option for a rainy or snowy day. We learned from an early age how to play War, Concentration, Crazy Eights, Old Maid and even poker when we were a little older.

You could play cards anywhere. There was no need to be tethered to an electrical cord. In the heat of the summer, you could play cards on the cool cement of the front porch or even by lantern light in a pup tent in the backyard.

When a deck of cards came out of the drawer, there was no preparation needed, except maybe to keep the dog or cat from walking across your field of Concentration cards. The biggest obstacle to card playing was finding a complete deck without too many dog-eared cards. It was a rite of passage to teach the younger siblings how to play a card game and watch their excitement when they figured it out.

Decks of cards could be found in Christmas stockings and despite all the other gifts under the tree, the cards probably saw the most use over the course of the year. Cards outlasted crashed model airplanes, deflated footballs and broken dolls.

Playing the assorted card games taught us how to think, not just push a button on a game controller. We learned how to outwit our opponents and be patient in our next move.

When poker became trendy among teenagers, there were games played, but without any monetary betting. Our

Engineers tested a model of the ion aircraft

Model using the phenomenon of ion wind can fly 60 meters.

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of technology conducted the first flight test aircraft model-noleta in which to ensure the desired thrust is used the phenomenon of ion wind, which is called the effect of Biffeld – brown. This is stated in the article the developers, published in Nature. During the tests, the aircraft with the help of ion thrust flew about 60 meters at a height of 47 inches from the ground. The launch of the aircraft was carried out with the help of catapult, informs UkrMedia.

The phenomenon of ion wind is characterized by the formation of a stream of ionized air between two spaced apart electrodes to which is supplied a high voltage of tens of kilovolts. Previously, some researchers have suggested possible designs of aircraft that would use the phenomenon of ion wind, but the projects were closed. It is believed that the engines, which use the effect of Biffeld – brown, can’t provide great traction.

In reality, it was made a few experimental aircraft, called lifters or holmami. They represent the light body in the form of a polygon, the triangle rule, which is one electrode in the form of copper wire and the foil tape. Such devices can climb vertically, but completely out of control. To assemble the lifter can independently at home.

Phil Burgess: Satisfying retirement scenarios often reflect lifelong interests

I’ve known Bill Lesko for more than two decades. But not really, I discovered.

Last week, I found out why: Lesko and his partner, Martha Fox, a retired elementary school math teacher, are always on the go.

Lesko is always interesting — beginning with his six years of volunteer work to restore and crew the SS John W. Brown, one of America’s two surviving Liberty ships, built in 41 days in 1942.

Out of 2,700 Liberty ships produced in World War II, 384 were built at Baltimore’s Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard. With two now seaworthy, the public can take eight-hour “living history” tours, steaming the Chesapeake Bay on these merchant ships that are heroes in the Allies’ victory in WWII.

Siloam Springs drone class popular among students

SILOAM SPRINGS — The high school is offering students the opportunity to learn more about unmanned aircraft and preparing them to earn a pilot’s license in a new drone class.

The yearlong class, offered for the first time this fall, has generated a lot of student interest, said teacher Megan Denison. It is a part of the career and technical education program. Denison said it focuses on the basics of flight, troubleshooting, repairs, laws on flying and possible careers. It also covers video editing and thermal imaging.

Students will be prepared to take the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 licensing test for piloting small unmanned aircraft.

The class is broad and appeals to students who are interested in a number of career fields, including film and television, engineering, agriculture, and search and rescue, as well as those who are just interested in what they can do with drones, Denison said.

The school offered two periods of the class to juniors and seniors this year, and both classes are full with 46 students, she said. Underclassmen have expressed a lot of interest in taking the class, Denison said.

Many students are already interested in drones or may even have their own, but the class provides adult supervision and career guidance, Denison said.

“Kids have this technology anyway and a lot of times they don’t see the career applications for it and they don’t necessarily understand the safety aspect of it until they have an
