Groups seek to spread passion for model airplanes

The model airplane flew around in a circle, looping and gliding in the gymnasium at the Teaneck National Guard Armory before landing on the red turf floor.

With its blue body and yellow wings, it was designed to resemble a pre-World War II trainer plane. River Vale resident Richard Tax was its pilot, using an electronic controller to delicately maneuver the craft and bring it safely down.

“There’s two maneuvers you have to learn first: How to take off and how to land,” Tax said. “Once you take off, you have to land, so you have to practice those two until you get them down pat.”

As he navigated his plane, the air at the armory was busy with miniature craft. A red plane traveled in circles before gently touching down. So did a yellow one, with white wings and a black-and-yellow stripe.

Another plane bore a painted Italian flag and had a paper cutout of its pilot sitting in the cockpit — a representation of its actual pilot, Metropolitan Sport Squadron President and Park Ridge resident Thomas Schiavone.

“It’s a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment,” Schiavone said of his hobby. “You’re controlling something without crashing it — although that sometimes happens.”

“I like flying with my feet on the ground,” he added.

It’s a typical Wednesday morning hangout for Tax, Schiavone and more than a dozen others, mostly men in their 50s through 80s, who come to the Teaneck Armory

Researchers successfully fly ion-drive model aircraft

A model ion-driven plane with a five-metre wingspan successfully completes a test flight.

Aeronautics engineers have succeeded in building and flying a model heavier-than-air powered aeroplane that contains no moving parts and creates no emissions.

The model, which has a five-metre wingspan, uses a solid-state propulsion system in which electrical forces accelerate ions in a fluid. It was built by a team headed by Haofeng Xu of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, and is described in a paper published in the journal Nature.

With the exception of unpowered gliders, all aircraft designed to date require a mechanical propulsion system incorporating moving parts – typically turbines or propellers – and (with the exception of few very early pedal-powered designs) fossil fuel inputs.

Electroaerodynamics, the ion-based system used by Xu and his colleagues, has long been mooted as an alternative, but the physics have proved to be extremely complicated.

The heart of the problem is that the thrust delivered by an electroaerodynamical engine is strongly affected by speed, air density and, hence, altitude. An analysis published in 2017 in the journal of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics found that the thrust-to-power ratio of an electroaerodynamical aeroplane would decrease by about 80% as the vehicle climbed from ground level to 25 kilometres up.

However, the study’s authors, Christopher Gilmore and Steven Barrett (who are also co-authors on Xu’s paper), found that some design tweaks could be employed to reduce the drop-off. Increasing the size of the thruster, they suggested,

Siloam Springs drone class popular among students – Northwest Arkansas Democrat

SILOAM SPRINGS — The high school is offering students the opportunity to learn more about unmanned aircraft and preparing them to earn a pilot’s license in a new drone class.

The yearlong class, offered for the first time this fall, has generated a lot of student interest, said teacher Megan Denison. It is a part of the career and technical education program. Denison said it focuses on the basics of flight, troubleshooting, repairs, laws on flying and possible careers. It also covers video editing and thermal imaging.

Students will be prepared to take the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 licensing test for piloting small unmanned aircraft.

The class is broad and appeals to students who are interested in a number of career fields, including film and television, engineering, agriculture, and search and rescue, as well as those who are just interested in what they can do with drones, Denison said.

The school offered two periods of the class to juniors and seniors this year, and both classes are full with 46 students, she said. Underclassmen have expressed a lot of interest in taking the class, Denison said.

Many students are already interested in drones or may even have their own, but the class provides adult supervision and career guidance, Denison said.

“Kids have this technology anyway and a lot of times they don’t see the career applications for it and they don’t necessarily understand the safety aspect of it until they have an

William Hallam – Leader

William C. Hallam, age 80 passed away unexpectedly at his home in rural Trempealeau County, November 16, 2018. He was born on April 18, 1938, in Illinois, the son of Benjamin Paul and Audrey (Hamilton) Hallam.

William, the eldest of five siblings, was raised in Racine, WI. He graduated from Washington Park High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science (Light Building Industry) degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. There he met his wife, Julie (Modine) Hallam, by chance one day when she asked for directions to the building B-10 Commerce. William was fortunate enough to know the way, which led to their marriage on September 15, 1963. They first lived in Madison, then Duluth, Eau Claire and finally settled south of Eleva in 1978, where they purchased land and established Bennett Ridge Farm.

An award-winning architect turned dairy farmer, William wanted to live a quiet life, build his own business and instill his value of hard work in his three daughters. He raised and milked registered Guernsey’s and worked tirelessly to improve the farm, land and herd. The same talents by which he excelled in architecture shaped a top-notch dairy farm. Years later he returned to architecture and became a partner at SDS Architects in Eau Claire. A life-long fisherman, William enjoyed traveling across Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada with his family in search of the elusive walleye. Together they spent many hours in his cherished boat, Badger 1.

In his retirement, William had a wide range of interests and

Valpo Flips the Switch on Christmas Season with Annual Winter Fest and Tree Lighting

Valparaiso’s beloved Central Park Plaza played host this evening to hundreds of happy families–and one very large tree– for the annual Winter Fest and Tree Lighting event.

Visitors to the annual event were treated to delicious hot chocolate, courtesy of Fluid Coffee Bar, while scores of people gathered around the ice skating rink at Urschel Pavilion to thrill to an ice skating exhibition by members of Midwest Ice Arena. Food vendors offered several tasty choices for parents and children to munch on while they awaited the arrival of the man of the hour: Santa Claus himself.

With festivities beginning at 4pm, the crowd buzzed and mingled and were entertained by the Jingletones, who performed acapella versions of everyone’s favorite holiday tunes, sometimes even inviting the crowd to join in.

John Siebert, director of Parks for Valparaiso graciously served as emcee for the evening’s events.

“This is our fourth annual Winter Fest,” Siebert said. “We’re here today with the generous support of 1st Source Bank as well as several other sponsors. We’ll be lighting the tree and celebrating the official opening of the holiday season.”

The tree, 35 feet tall and adorned with 19,000 lights, sits squarely in the center of Valparaiso’s Central Park Plaza.

“We’re also working with Lakeshore Lanscaping to do all the lights around the perimeter of the park, as well,” Siebert said. “I’d say we have another ten to fifteen thousand lights here.”

“This is one of the ‘selfie capitals’ of northwest Indiana. Not only because

7 Reasons To Not Buy A Tesla … Yet

Cars

I’ve written a lot of articles about how great and affordable the Tesla Model 3 is, and I truly believe it has the potential to become one of the best selling cars of all time. Does that mean it is the right car for everyone? No. Although it must be enjoyable for everyone to drive (or not drive, once the full-self-driving software is available), it just isn’t the right car for everyone.

So, in the interest of balance, I thought I should list the reasons why I wouldn’t recommend the Model 3 as your main car for some of you trying to use logic and be rational under certain circumstances. (If you can afford it, you could still get it as a second car.)

1. Your Driveway Looks Like This

Although all three Tesla models either come with all-wheel drive as standard or offer it as an option,
