Man in U.S. on work visa gets 9 years in prison for sex assault on flight

DETROIT — An Indian man living in the U.S. on a work visa was sentenced to nine years in prison Thursday for sexually assaulting a sleeping woman during an overnight flight to Detroit.

Prabhu Ramamoorthy was in a middle seat sitting next to the victim while his wife was in an aisle seat on a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas last January. The 23-year-old victim said he unzipped her pants, unbuttoned her shirt and molested her with his hands.

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of nearly 11 years, but U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg settled on a nine-year term. He said he hoped it would be “grave enough” to deter others from committing similar crimes.

A jury convicted Ramamoorthy in August. He will be deported to India after serving his sentence.

The victim, a model, declined an opportunity to speak in court. She watched the hearing from the first row with her boyfriend and a support dog.

At trial, she testified that she woke up during the flight and “saw his hands inside me.” She said she felt “petrified, frozen.”

“Everyone has the right to be secure and safe when they travel on airplanes. … We appreciate the victim in this case for her courage to speak out,” U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider said.

Ramamoorthy, 35, has lived in suburban Detroit since arriving in the U.S. on

Want to Discover Your Entrepreneurial Passion? Here’s an Idea: Go Back in Time.

There is a folk tale about a prospector in gold country. Every day, he bought supplies and headed off to pan for gold in the local river, returning each night empty-handed.

One morning, at the town’s mercantile store, a woman asked the man how much gold he’d found, and he replied as he always did that he hadn’t found any but would be back at that task again the next day. When the woman asked how long he’d been panning for gold overall, the prospector told her: 20 years.

The woman couldn’t believe it. If he hadn’t found any gold in all those years, why would he continue? And to this, the man simply replied, “How else can I justify what I’ve been doing for 20 years?”

From an entrepreneurial point of view, that response is sad, because the message of the story, especially for an entrepreneur, is that you must be willing to let go of whom you’ve learned to be and instead become who you are.

To find out what that is, look back at your childhood. As a child, everything you encountered was new — sights, sounds, faces, nature, food. So, you began to discover how the world worked by separating things into categories. Some of those things completely excited you; others were decidedly unappealing; and the rest left you feeling ambivalent.

The empirical definition and nature of entrepreneurial “passion” is evolving, and so is the debate over its role in the

Northrop Grumman Plans To Upend Aerial Surveillance Market With Their Optionally Manned Firebird

There are indicators that Northrop Grumman is going to bridge Firebird’s mission flexibility with business model flexibility that will provide potential customers a menu of options for accessing the aircraft and modular payload components to fly on it. Selling aircraft outright in a traditional sense is still an option, but being able to lease the aircraft on multiple levels could also be highly attractive for less cash-rich customers or for those who just are not in need of large enough ISR capacity that would necessitate standing up a dedicated fleet of aircraft.

Even providing fixed per-hour contracts with various payload configurations factored in could provide some customers with economic certainty not offered by other business arrangements. This sort of deal structure is becoming increasingly popular for other aerial contractor air services that have been traditionally furnished by organically owned and operated fleets of aircraft. Even chartering the aircraft’s services for short periods of time, like for scientific surveys or specific law enforcement operations, would allow Firebird to bring a higher-end ISR capability to far more customers than what the more inelastic unmanned MALE market offers currently.

The so-called ‘ecosystem’ that could be intrinsic to making Firebird a big success will include multiple partners that extend outside of the aircraft and its payload systems. Tenax Aerospace, a company which offers many types of aerospace services to U.S. government agencies, including VVIP airlift and contracted ISR aircraft, is currently exploring how to

14 Landmark Innovations That Changed the Course of Aviation History

We take aviation for granted, with airports for every city, jet routes to every popular destination, and private jets for luxury travel—but the business jet is a fairly new invention. The military began to develop small jet-powered cabin-class aircraft as VIP transports in the 1950s, and soon the private sector caught on to the trend, with Learjet and Dassault Falcon introducing their private jets in the early 1960s. Those aircraft were cutting-edge for their time, but over the decades the safety, comfort, efficiency, and capability of private jets have improved dramatically, and technology continues to move forward.

The Jet Engine

The jet engine itself is a huge step up from piston engines, which are built from hundreds of interacting parts, systems, and subsystems. Pistons require constant maintenance and are prone to breaking down. But the pure simplicity of the jet engine is its strongest asset—air is taken in at the front, compressed, then sprayed with fuel and set on fire. The burning gases expand and blast out from the rear of the engine, creating thrust to drive the jet forward. It’s simple and reliable, and Bruce Landsberg, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board and longtime aviation-safety advocate, calls it “one of the most effective safety enhancements ever.” Plus, jet aircraft can fly faster and at higher altitudes than piston-driven airplanes, enabling them to get above most weather systems.

Watch the first plane with no moving parts take flight – video

The flight represents a breakthrough in ‘ionic wind’ technology, which uses a powerful electric field to generate charged nitrogen ions, which are then expelled from the back of the aircraft, generating thrust. The plane has a propulsion system that is entirely electrically powered, almost silent, and with a thrust-to-power ratio comparable to that achieved by conventional systems such as jet engines
