ANA unveils planes with Hawaiian green sea turtle designs

HONOLULU (KHON2) – All Nippon Airways unveiled its newest airbus A380 with a local twist.

The new plane sports a Hawaiian green sea turtle.

ANA is releasing three of these airbuses each with different colors and different designs.

The blue color scheme represents Hawaii’s blue skies.

The second aircraft will have an emerald green color scheme inspired by Hawaii waters.

The third will be orange, in reference to Hawaii’s sunsets.

The turtle plane is scheduled for an inaugural flight from Tokyo to Honolulu on May 24, 2019.

Preparations are on schedule and the first aircraft, scheduled to have its exterior painting completed in mid-December 2018, will fly three round trips per week, departing from Japan on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The frequency will increase to ten round trips per week when the second aircraft starts operation, currently planned on July 1, 2019.

Sales for First Class and ANA COUCHii, which will be newly introduced, will start in January 2019.

On the Airbus A380, ANA will

Simulating a Cleaner World, From Molecule to Metropolis

Engineers are using sophisticated models to clean plastic debris from oceans, optimize airflow in smog-filled cities, and make vehicles lighter and more efficient.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch will soon start shrinking. In October, The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit foundation based in the Netherlands, floated out and installed System 001 (nicknamed Wilson), to remove some of the rubbish floating on or just below the ocean’s surface. The patch of 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, which lies halfway between Hawaii and California, is roughly twice the size of Texas. System 001 is a 600-meter floating pipe, deployed in a U-shape, with a 3m-deep skirt. Without human intervention, once deployed, it takes advantage of three natural oceanic forces—wind, waves and currents—to travel faster than the plastic, which it then catches. “After 60 of these systems are deployed, they’ll reduce the area’s plastic by 50 per cent within five years,” says Bruno Sainte-Rose, computational modeler for The Ocean Cleanup.

System 001 is a major advance over conventional ocean cleanup methods such as vessels and nets—which need a crew, would take an exceptionally long time, and would cost tens of billions of dollars. Wilson’s unique structure and collection method were designed on 3D modeling software created by Dassault Systèmes. By using virtual modeling, The Ocean Cleanup team generated knowledge about the ideal design for System 001 faster and more accurately than they could with physical testing. “We’re embarking on a challenge that has never been tackled at this scale before,” says Sainte-Rose. “We’re relying very

Def Leppard

A group of fresh-faced teenagers formed Def Leppard in Sheffield, England in 1977. They quickly emerged as the most commercially successful band in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Combining new wave’s accessibility with metal’s guitar-driven power and glam rock’s sexiness, they set the stage for metal’s domination of arenas, airwaves, and television in the 1980s. Def Leppard defined visual theatricality.

They staged larger-than-life concerts filled with pyrotechnics, unencumbered performance energy, and sexy swagger. They created the model for hard rock bands looking to harness MTV’s hard rock potential with classic videos like “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages.” On the multi-platinum albums Pyromania and Hysteria, Mutt Lange guided the band as they honed their signature sound — a sound that would sustain the band from pub

Silent and Easy Ion Engine Powers a Airplane with No Transferring Elements

Researchers fly the first atmospheric aircraft to use space-proven ionic thrust technology

Behind a thin white veil separating his makeshift lab from joggers at a Massachusetts Institute of Technology indoor track, aerospace engineer Steven Barrett recently test-flew the first-ever airplane powered with ionic wind thrusters—electric engines that generate momentum by creating and firing off charged particles.

Using this principle to fly an aircraft has long been, according even to Barrett, a “far-fetched idea” and the stuff of science fiction. But he still wanted to try. “In Star Trek you have shuttlecraft gliding silently past,” he says. “I thought, ‘We should have aircraft like that.’”

Thinking ionic wind propulsion could fit the bill, he spent eight years studying the technology and then decided to try building a prototype miniature aircraft—albeit one he thought was a little ugly. “It’s a kind of dirty yellow color,” he says, adding that black paint often contains carbon—which conducts electricity and caused a previous iteration to fry itself.

Barrett had slightly higher hopes for the latest prototype, which he dispassionately named Version 2. “Before we started the test flights I thought it had maybe a 50–50 chance,” he says. “My colleague at MIT thought it was more like a 1 percent chance it would work.”

But unlike its predecessors, which had tumbled to the ground, Version 2 sailed nearly 200 feet through the air at roughly 11 miles per hour (17 kilometers per hour). With no visible exhaust and no roaring jet or whirling propeller—no moving parts at all, in

Renovated Undercliff restaurant open after 2-year hiatus

NEOSHO, Mo. — After two years of being closed to complete major interior renovations, the Undercliff Grill Bar along Old Highway 71 has reopened for business.

“It feels awesome to open,” said Brad Ezell, owner. “It’s nice to have this place back for the community to enjoy.”

Ezell purchased the extraordinary Tipton Ford building — which is built into the side of a limestone bluff — after it closed in 2016.

“One of the reasons why I bought it was because grandpa and I used to sit at that table,” Ezell said, pointing at a round table decorated with badges representing the branches of the U.S. military. “A little model airplane that he built years ago hung from the ceiling, which we’re getting ready to put back up.”

Ezell was also attracted by the building’s historical significance, he said. What is now the Undercliff was initially a second location for a 1920s feed and grocery store for the Tipton Ford community.

Ab McConnell sold his store to Otto Heckmaster, Lee Donaldson and Roy Nase in 1923. Heckmaster eventually became sole owner, and the next year he decided to move the store against the bluff across the railroad tracks, naming it “Under Cliff.”

The location eventually was transformed into a restaurant. It changed hands a number of times after 1936, and became popular for a deep-fried chicken recipe when Frank and Bonnie Crabb took over as owners in 1961. The locations went through several owners and even closed for a number of years, until purchased in

Andrew Charles Pucio: 1939-2018

ANDREW CHARLES PUCIO

1939 – 2018

Born 12/12/1939 Los Angeles, CA –  Died 11/25/2018 Renown Hospital, Reno, NV

Andy lived a productive and faithful life in peaceful, quiet dignity.  Feeling a need to serve at an early age, he joined the Boy Scouts in Los Angeles where he learned to cherish nature and honor his community.

Taking him throughout the Pacific Ocean, he served as a radio operator in the Navy from 1958-1963 on the ship, “Tulare.”  His first job after discharge was with the Pacific Telephone Co. in L.A. for 2 years. Following in his father’s footsteps he then joined the San Diego Fire Department from 1965 -1979, retiring at the rank of Captain.  During that time he helped start the city’s first paramedic program.

After retiring from public service, Andy wished to go back to school becoming the first one in his family to graduate from college.  He earned a Bachelors degree in Geography from Cal State Fullerton, which further deepened his appreciation for earth sciences and history.

He and his dearest love, Kay, built their dream home (and dream garden) in Bishop in 1994 where he began serving the community.  Skilled with his hands, he contributed to the development and restoration of the Brill Car woodwork at Laws Railroad Museum. He was a licensed ham radio operator and patiently taught Kay to pass the tests and become one too.

Daily he tended to his garden and enjoyed long walks along trails in the Owens Valley.  He grew vegetables and flowers, built model airplanes,
