Local pilot recognized by aircraft association

Dec. 27–A local man has been recognized for donating his time to promote aviation in the Effingham area.

Stanley Bahrns recently received a Certificate of Appreciation for giving over 100 Young Eagles flying enthusiasts a chance to experience a ride in an airplane. The Young Eagles program, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), gives kids between the ages of 8-17 the opportunity to take a free ride in a small aircraft.

Bahrns said the Young Eagles organization has chapters across the United States, including Chapter 16 in Effingham.

Bahrns knows four Young Eagles that have gained commercial aviation certification, including Blake Walker, a former Young Eagle member originally from Watson.

Walker took his first flight as a Young Eagle in Effingham from Doug McDevitt in the summer of 2016 and is attending Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Walker now holds a Federal Aviation Administration Single/Multi-engine commercial pilot certificate, recently completed an internship with United Airlines and is currently working on his FAA Instructor certificate.

Bahrns said getting to the 100 benchmark was a little more challenging for him owning a two-seat aircraft while other pilots associated with the Young Eagles Chapter 16 have given many more rides.

“I could have given twice as many rides,” Bahrns said. “My plane only has two seats and I can only take one person at a time.”

“Most of the people giving rides are in a four-seater,” Bahrns said. “So, they can take three kids at a time.”

Deaths Seized the Attention of Millions in 2018, Sometimes Surprisingly

As fate would have it, Mr. Laxalt died on the same day — Aug. 6 — as did another figure of the Reagan years, Margaret Heckler, a moderate Republican who championed women’s rights in the House and became the administration’s Health and Human Services secretary. (As fate would doubly have it, their obituaries, appearing together on the same day, had both been written in advance by a veteran former political reporter for The Times, Adam Clymer, who died a little more than a month later.)

The Senate also bade farewell to Daniel Akaka, Democrat of Hawaii, a champion of neglected Asian-American war veterans; John Melcher, Democrat of Montana, a former veterinarian and reliable centrist who made preserving his state’s wilderness and keeping bread on its farmers’ tables his priorities; and the Georgian Zell Miller, a former governor and conservative Democrat who was most widely recalled for his fiery keynote speech at the 2004 national convention — the Republican one, that is.

Still another Democrat, though no ideological bedfellow of Mr. Miller’s, was Ron Dellums, a Californian who brought a left-wing, antiwar agenda to the House in 1971 and, over 27 years there, rose to chairman of the Armed Services Committee and leader of the Congressional Black Caucus.

If Mr. Dellums’s death evoked the home-front struggle against the Vietnam War, that of Ernest Medina, a

MIT Scientists Claim First Successful Fuel-Free, Engine-Free Ion-Powered Flight

What if powered mechanical flight didn’t require all the normal trappings of aircraft? That is, a flight that does not need big heavy jet engines to get a plane off the ground, or tons of octane to power this propulsion? Well, some engineers and scientists assert that this arrangement isn’t actually necessary for the purpose of artificial flight at all.

This is not an old theory, either – inventors have dedicated their lives to the discovery of flight without traditional propulsion since the 1920s. However, the technologies they developed were never sophisticated or precise enough to deliver on their gravity-defying dreams.

But now, a group of MIT scientists believes that there could a way to convert these dreams into reality.

Alternative Flight: Thrust Without Fuel?

The conventional theory of flight goes more or less like this: the wings of aerial vehicles are so designed (after decades of studying models such as bird wings) that they can generate a stream of air underneath them in order to keep them in flight. However, these vehicles are also heavy, and therefore, need a significant amount of thrust to get them high enough into the air in order to set up these streams in the first place. Therefore, relatively huge, complex engines with hundreds of moving parts were developed to provide this thrust. With a few exceptions, the energy to drive these engines came from fossil fuels.

This principle keeps all craft along the lines of the bi-wing airplane in the air. However, some scientists believe that

UPDATE: Authorities say one dead in Sioux Falls plane crash – KELO AM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Authorities say at least one person has been killed in a plane crash in southeast Sioux Falls this evening.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident and are not sure if others were killed in the mishap or not.

What’s believed to be a small aircraft crashed in yards in the 49th and Birchwood area.

There’s been no release of information yet on the registration number of the aircraft, the route of the flight, the aircraft’s make and model, owner, or souls on board.

The City of Sioux Falls emergency manager Regan Smith says the aircraft was “single engine, small framed.” He said two houses were struck and that there was a large debris field.

Smith added the plane was flying south when the accident occurred.

Smith says the National Transportation Safety Board will be arriving to investigate the accident.

What my dad, who died on Christmas Day, taught me by always giving awful presents

Dad poked his head out his bedroom door, saw me passing by and yanked me inside.

“Help me wrap!”

He needed help with gifts for my younger brother and sister.

We sat on the floor, surrounded by ribbons and scraps of holiday paper. He was still in his blue work shirt after pulling an all-night tow call, asking me whether I thought Santa would bring me everything I wanted. I was 16.

I pulled from the Napa Auto Parts bag a rubbery black stick. He snatched it back. Because that was clearly MY gift.

“No, not that one. This bag. Wrap what’s in this bag.”

That’s how I knew, with my newly minted driver’s license and first used car, I got a tire air pressure gauge for Christmas.

Every year, my mom gave us neatly wrapped packages signed in perfect script with “Love, mom and dad.” She gave us clothes, toys and jewelry. These were the gifts we’d asked for and wanted.

Dad bought his own gifts. A mechanic and tow truck driver by trade, they came from auto part stores and sometimes luxury car washes. Over the years, I received sheep skin seat covers, new rims and tool sets.

He got us what he wanted, but it didn’t matter

I’m not knocking gifts of the gear-head variety. They were
