Royal Air Maroc Takes Delivery of Its First Boeing 737 MAX Airplane

Boeing delivered the first 737 MAX for Royal Air Maroc, which plans to use the fuel-efficient, longer-range version of the popular 737 jet to expand and modernize its fleet.

Morocco’s flag carrier – which welcomed its first 787-9 Dreamliner last week – will take delivery of three more 737 MAX 8s and three more 787-9s over the next few months as part of its strategic plan to strengthen its operations.

“We are pleased to receive our airline’s first 737 MAX, which will soon be joined by three other airliners from the same family. These new 737 MAX airplanes expand our medium-haul portfolio, which forms the backbone of Royal Air Maroc’s fleet. Our choice of this airplane is in line with our strategy of continuously expanding and modernizing our fleet, and comes just a few days after the announcement of Royal Air Maroc’s invitation to join the most prestigious Oneworld Alliance. This in turn will further strengthen our leadership position on the continent, both for our country and for Royal Air Maroc,” said Abdelhamid Addou, CEO and Chairman of Article source: http://aviationtribune.com/airlines/africa/royal-air-maroc-takes-delivery-of-its-first-boeing-737-max-airplane/

Japan court OKs bail for Nissan American exec in Ghosn case

TOKYO — A Japanese court has approved a bail request for Nissan Motor Co. executive Greg Kelly, who was detained and charged with underreporting the income of his boss, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn.

Tokyo District Court said Tuesday that the American Kelly will be released on 70 million yen ($635,600) bail. His release could come before the end of the day.

Kelly and Ghosn have been detained in Tokyo since their Nov. 19 arrest. They are charged with underreporting Ghosn’s pay by about 5 billion yen ($44 million) in 2011-2015.

Kelly’s Japanese lawyer sought bail after the court dismissed prosecutors’ request for more detention.

Charges for their underreporting allegation in more recent years are pending.

Ghosn, also facing breach of trust allegations, would be detained at least until Jan. 1.

Iran submits first budget since US sanctions were restored

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s president has submitted next year’s budget to parliament, the first after the United States renewed sanctions targeting the oil industry.

The $47.5 billion budget submitted Tuesday is less than half of last year’s, mainly due to the severe depreciation of the local currency following President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and restore U.S. sanctions. The Iranian rial has fallen from around 42,000 to the dollar a year ago to around 100,000 today.

The government plans to fund 35 per cent of the budget with oil revenues, projecting exports of up to 1.5 million barrels a day at a maximum of $54 a barrel. It did not say whether it projects a deficit.

President Hassan Rouhani says the sanctions will not bring Iran “to its knees.”

Tourists, Romans gather in St. Peter’s Square to hear pope

VATICAN CITY — Thousands of tourists and Romans have gathered in St. Peter’s Square for Pope Francis’s Christmas message to the world.

Police waved metal-detecting wands as the faithful waited patiently to enter the vast square on a sunny, mild day ahead of the Tuesday noon appearance. Metal-detecting machines were also deployed under the colonnade embracing the square, as part of tight Vatican City security measures.

The Pope’s traditional “Urbi et Orbi” speech — (“to the city of Rome and the world”) — often is an occasion for the pope to speak about the globe’s trouble spots and other violence.

Francis celebrated Christmas Eve Mass on Monday for the faithful in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Awaiting Tuesday’s papal speech from the basilica’s central balcony, tourists admired a life-sized Nativity scene.

More than 3,000 patients possibly exposed to HIV, hepatitis

SADDLE BROOK, N.J. — The New Jersey Department of Health says more than 3,000 patients at a surgery centre may have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Officials say patients who had procedures done at the HealthPlus Surgery Center in Saddle Brook between January 2018 and Sept. 7, 2018 may have been exposed.

Surgery centre administrator Betty McCabe says the exposure was due to “deficiencies in infection control” involving the cleaning of instruments and injection of medications. McCabe says 3,778 patients are being urged to get their blood tested.

The health department says the risk of infection is low, and no illnesses have been reported. The department called it “an abundance of caution” to suggest that people be tested.

McCabe says the centre is offering to pay medical costs associated with testing.
