National The most talked-about aviation moments in 2018 CNN 6:50 AM, Dec 28, 2018

Bigger, busier, longer, safer — but not faster.

This was another record-breaking year for aviation. In 2018, we flew more, but safety records were higher than ever.

The world’s longest flight relaunched, between Singapore and New York, and the first ever direct flight took place between Australia and the UK.

We got excited about the Boeing 777X, with its game-changing folding winglets, and the Beluga XL, with its humpbacked shape and smiling whale livery.

We were wowed by the upcoming Jewel addition to Changi’s Singapore Airport, and can’t wait to book our rooms in the retro-themed TWA Hotel at JFK.

Here are

What’s Ahead For Airlines And Aviation In 2019

Forbes’ expert aviation contributors see change in the air next year. From airline MA to advances in technologies that will change the passenger experience to a slowdown in the torrent of outbound Chinese travel, here are their predictions for 2019.

Samuel Engel, managing director of aviation at the consultancy ICF

THE BIG TREND: Declining profitability, at least for the U.S. carriers. As the economy slows, it will be hard for demand to keep up with rising capacity and costs.

WHAT TO WATCH: Amazon’s expansion into the aviation space. By the end of 2019, Amazon’s Prime logistics will have all the pieces of a major integrator, like UPS and FedEx (5th largest fleet in the world?): aircraft, distribution centers, last mile delivery, scalable IT platform and customer contact.

THE UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM: Passengers want biometrics. Biometrics help tighten security and can be used to speed immigration, but it will be several more years before biometrics are consistently able to speed passenger boarding. And overhead bins will still be the constraint.

Glenn Hollister, head of the travel and transportation practice at ZS Associates

THE BIG TREND: Distribution of airline tickets will actually start to experience the upheaval everyone has predicted for years as direct connects build volume and a technology called the New Distribution Capability (NDC) becomes a reality.

THE UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM: As segmentation (e.g. basic economy) and new products

Boeing Commercial Airplanes and Market Outlook Press Conference

Boeing held a press conference on its commercial airplanes and market outlook on March 16, 2018, at Conrad Seoul Hotel. At the conference, Darren Hurst, Boeing’s marketing manager of the commercial airplane in Northeast Asia region, made the presentation on Boeing’s flagship airplanes aiming at low-cost carrier (LCC) market, which is rapidly growing, and the next-generation business.

The explosive growth of the low-cost carrier market has drawn a massive growth in demand for single-aisle airplanes, which are mainly operated. At the end of 2017, the aircraft 737 recorded the order of 4668 units, which far exceeds orders of 747 (12 units), 767 units (98 units), 777 units (428 units) and 787 units (658 units).

Boeing is optimistic that the growth will continue in 2018. In particular, around 500 units of 737-800/MAX model will be supplied in 2017, contributing to meeting the worldwide demand, which is expected to lead to the more solid demand this year, when the supply of MAX model is started in earnest.

What my dad, who died on Christmas Day, taught me by always giving awful presents

Dad poked his head out his bedroom door, saw me passing by and yanked me inside.

“Help me wrap!”

He needed help with gifts for my younger brother and sister.

We sat on the floor, surrounded by ribbons and scraps of holiday paper. He was still in his blue work shirt after pulling an all-night tow call, asking me whether I thought Santa would bring me everything I wanted. I was 16.

I pulled from the Napa Auto Parts bag a rubbery black stick. He snatched it back. Because that was clearly MY gift.

“No, not that one. This bag. Wrap what’s in this bag.”

That’s how I knew, with my newly minted driver’s license and first used car, I got a tire air pressure gauge for Christmas.

Every year, my mom gave us neatly wrapped packages signed in perfect script with “Love, mom and dad.” She gave us clothes, toys and jewelry. These were the gifts we’d asked for and wanted.

Dad bought his own gifts. A mechanic and tow truck driver by trade, they came from auto part stores and sometimes luxury car washes. Over the years, I received sheep skin seat covers, new rims and tool sets.

He got us what he wanted, but it didn’t matter

I’m not knocking gifts of the gear-head variety. They were great, though perhaps not for teenage daughters and a bookish son. He got us what he loved. What he would have wanted.

On Christmas morning, in the heap of opened presents, his gifts lay untouched. He only wanted to see the rapture on his children’s faces when they opened the gifts from Pep Boys

The big jet behind Everett’s big doors: Boeing readies first 777X to fly

While most airplanes look much the same to harried air travelers, early next year Boeing’s newest jet may manage to catch and arrest even the casual eye.

Passengers about to board will see its long, long carbon-fiber wings arc up and away from low on the fuselage, gull-like, then curve downward to the tips. There the wings will end in what will surely be the iconic image of this plane: scythelike wingtips painted with a 777X and folded upward so the jet fits at the airport gate.

Hanging from the wings will be the most gigantic jet engines anyone has ever seen.

Behind the big doors of Boeing’s Everett assembly plant, Jason Clark, vice president of operations for the 777, gestured toward the all-but-complete 777X flight-test plane, the first of its two engines newly hung on the left wing, the tips folded up so as not to hit the factory walls.

“That’s the first airplane we’ll take into the sky,” said Clark. “In the next few weeks, we’ll be bringing the airplane to life.”

Engineers and mechanics are preparing to roll out this majestic jet for its public debut as early as February. It’ll fly for the first time a month or two later. Days before Christmas, Clark gave The Seattle Times an advance look.

This first plane, a 777-9X model, is 252 feet long. When those 11-footlong
