Royals to discuss disaster relief at Jo Kennon Library

DOWLING PARK — Disaster relief following Hurricane Michael will be discussed next week at the Jo Kennon Public Library in Dowling Park.

Bud and Joyce Royal will speak at 10 a.m. Tuesday about their ongoing involvement in Florida Baptist Disaster Relief, an organization consisting of volunteers that are trained and credentialed to respond to disaster.

The disaster relief offered by FBDR is provided to communities and individuals free of charge.

The Royals’ presentation will cover the response in the panhandle following Michael and will include pictures of Panama City and surrounding areas and how interested individuals can be trained to participate in the future.

Also in February, the seed library will be open Thursday, as well as Feb. 21, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. In addition to checking out three packets of seeds from the seed library, the Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions. At 10 a.m. Thursday, the Master Gardeners will also be hosting their workshop on “Garden Ready.”

County historian Eric Musgrove will be discussing Ruby McCollum at noon on Thursday as part of his History of Suwannee County series.

Also at the library Thursday will be Kristina Young with Elder Options. At 2 p.m. she will present on: preventive and screening services (disease prevention and what’s covered/your cost/who is eligible) and detect, report, protect (what to watch for in regards to scams, fraud and identify theft, how it impacts everyone and who to call).

The library’s Barbershop Chat discussion group will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 14 and Feb. 28 to talk about topics

Weekend fun: Hoop dancing competition, air shows, an art and wine festival

CLOSE

The Heard Museum presents its annual hoop-dancing championship. Or, check out art and wine festivals and an air show.
Nicole Schaub, Arizona Republic

The beginning of February is a busy time in metro Phoenix, with arts, cultural, historical and hobby-focused events that appeal to people with many interests. If you are curious about hoop dancing, model airplane demonstrations, historical aircraft or fine art, check out one of these local events.

Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dance Contest

Traditionally, hoop dancing was performed at Native American healing ceremonies. The style of dance has continued to evolve throughout the years as more intricate hoop formations and movements have been developed.

In its 29th year, the Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dance Contest will showcase the artistry and athleticism of hoop dancing during a two-day competition Feb. 9-10.

Male and female dancers compete in youth, teen, adult and senior categories. Children 5 and younger will show off their skills in the Tiny Tots division. Last year, 90 dancers from around the country took part in the competition.

Some dancers travel from as far as Alberta, Canada, and Florida to compete. Cassandra Lofgreen, manager of audience development for the Heard Museum, said each dancer brings something distinctive.

“Everyone has such a different

Flying Trojan: Mayfield High students set to build an airplane – Las Cruces Sun

LAS CRUCES – Students taking the Air Force Junior Research Labs course at Mayfield High School already design rockets and pilot aerial drones and underwater robots. Now, thanks to a collaborative effort among several classrooms coordinated by Mayfield’s Junior ROTC commander, students have begun work building a single-seat airplane.

Their hope is that the plane, dubbed the Flying Trojan, will eventually take flight with a motor and major components designed and built by Mayfield students.

Retired U.S. Air Force Major Val Bigger, the school’s senior aerospace science instructor, led the Sun-News on a tour of shop and auto mechanic classes at Mayfield — the only high school in the district still offering them.

In a room at the back of the auto shop sits the fuselage of a “Baby Ace” kit plane, alongside a Continental 0-200 engine in need of rebuilding.

Elsewhere on campus, engineering students use industry-standard software to design 3-D models for components which will then be crafted and welded by metalworking students for construction of the plane.

Engineering instructor Granville Richardson said the Flying Trojan is an ideal project for the students. “This brought us from just an assignment to something that could be done real-world practical,” he said. “We’re trying to put these kids in a real-world setting and see their parts get built, and so there’s a sense of accomplishment: ‘I’m part of that.'”

The North Magnetic Pole’s Mysterious Journey Across the Arctic

But for most people at low- and mid-latitudes, the current model is safe to use.

“South of 65 degrees north and away from Canada, the average user will notice very little difference to their daily life,” said Ciaran Beggan, a geophysicist at B.G.S.

With the updates now complete, scientists are anxious to understand the causes of the pole’s Siberian sprint. “It’s clear that something strange is happening,” said Phil Livermore, a geophysicist at the University of Leeds in England.

On multiple occasions during Earth’s long history, the magnetic field has weakened dramatically. The north magnetic pole slipped toward the bottom of the planet, and the south magnetic sauntered toward the top. The process took a few thousand years, but by the time the field’s full strength returns, it has flipped.

The pole’s recent journey, along with other changes — like a weakening of Earth’s magnetic field — has led some scientists to wonder whether such a reversal might be around the corner, geologically speaking.

“It does tick off some of the boxes of magnetic reversal,” said Courtney Sprain, a geophysicist at the University of Liverpool in England, who added that, “we definitely can’t say that for sure.”

Most scientists, including Dr. Sprain, doubt an impending geomagnetic reversal. First, while the north magnetic pole does appear to be on the move, it doesn’t represent a global phenomenon, just a regional one.

Dr. Livermore, for example, thinks
