EXCLUSIVE: Daron Dean talks ‘Deep Dive’, science, body positivity and more

Daron Dean is a woman of many talents. When she’s not busy being a successful curve model for the likes of Nike, the beauty is sharing her wealth of science knowledge with the world as the host of Refinery29’s new weekly live-stream Twitch series Deep Dive with Daron.

Each week, Daron delves into a different science based topic which will pique the interest of any millennial. So far she has covered everything from climate change to coffee, skincare to the science of hangovers, and combines her bubbly personality and incredible knowledge to create live-streams which are both fascinating and fun.

Additionally, Daron is a powerful body positivity activist and an advocate for women in STEM education. Growing up as a biracial plus-size woman with a keen interest in science, Daron realised from a young age that she was different, however, over the years she also acknowledged the importance of embracing her natural beauty.

Daron is without doubt an incredible role model in today’s industry and uses her platform to spread a positive message which encourages women all around the world to be proud of the things which make them unique.

We recently spoke to Daron about embracing her inner science nerd on Deep Dive, her dream modelling collaborations, the advice she’d give to her eight-year-old self, and more.

The magnetic North Pole is moving toward Russia

If you take out a compass and follow the needle north, it won’t take you directly to the North Pole — or 90 degrees north latitude.

Instead, your long journey by land and sea and ice would currently take you to a spot in the Arctic Ocean a few hundred miles away from geographic North. 115 years ago, it would have dropped you off in Canada.

This week — after a delay due to the US government shutdown — the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a new World Magnetic Model that shows the pole has moved yet again, and at a weirdly fast pace.

The model is a map of magnetic north and the Earth’s magnetic field. And magnetic north has now moved away from Canada and toward Siberia, in a nearly straight line.

The locations of magnetic north and south have always been moving targets. Because of that, NOAA and its partners in the UK release an updated magnetic model of the Earth every five years. That way, navigation systems that use magnetic compasses, like those used by airplanes, can be more accurate and correct for the difference between the magnetic poles and the geographic ones.

The next update wasn’t supposed to happen until the end of 2019. But magnetic north has been moving at a rate of 31 miles a year since the last update in 2015 — faster than usual.

Livermore Lab’s breakthrough advances 3D printing applications | News | PleasantonWeekly.com |

“It looks like something you might find aboard the Starship Enterprise,” said Jeremy Thomas, a spokesman for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

He was talking about a projector that can beam a three-dimensional video into a container of photosensitive resin (pictured, photo by Hossein Heidari, UC Berkeley). The container then rotates for a few minutes, lets the fluids drain and then leaves behind a complete, fully formed 3D object.

“Though it seems like science fiction, it’s not, thanks to scientists and engineers at LLNL and UC Berkeley, who have developed a brand-new high-speed 3D printing method called Computed Axial Lithography (CAL),” Thomas said in an announcement about the procedure.

The method is described a paper printed in the journal “Science,” published online Jan. 31.

“This is a breakthrough in the space of possible methods to do additive manufacturing,” said LLNL engineer Maxim Shusteff, a co-author on the paper.

“What this approach does is make it possible for interesting polymer parts to be made much more quickly, which is often a bottleneck, and we can now think about using materials that don’t work well with slower layer-by-layer methods,” Shusteff added.

Thomas said that LLNL and UC Berkeley have filed a joint patent on the technology, which builds on and leaps beyond the pioneering work on multibeam manufacturing, or VAM.

CAL creates entire parts at once, using projected photons to illuminate a syrup-like resin, creating a continuously shifting video of projections as the vial rotates. Like a CT

The Design And Construction Of A Tribute To A Bomber Pilot

Decades ago, [wilmracer]’s grandfather was piloting a B-17 over the Rhine, and as it goes, aviation runs in families. Now, more than 70 years later [wilmracer] is deep, deep into remote controlled aircraft, and he’s building an exacting scale model of the B-17G his grandfather flew on his last bombing mission over Europe.

This is a scratch build, with the design taken directly from the plans and schematics of a B-17. [wilmracer] has already paid the money to go up in the preserved B-17 Aluminum Overcast to get a better idea of the layout, and now he’s deep into cutting foam and bending balsa sheets. The first part of the build was arguably the hardest, and the main landing gear was expertly constructed out of aluminum tube and linear servos. The horizontal stab follows traditional building techniques of foam and carefully sanded balsa sheets. The fuselage is impressive, with the formers built out of foam, and eventually covered in 1/16″ balsa and wrapped in fiberglass.

If you’re going to do a large-scale model airplane, that also means you’ve got to do detailing. That means steam gauges rendered in 3D printed parts. [wilmracer] is modeling the cockpit and the machine guns in 1:9 scale. This is going to be an awesome build, and yes, there will eventually be plans.

Of course, this isn’t the biggest small B-17 ever built. That record goes to the 1:3 scale Bally Bomber, a real, not remote
