‘Playing with lives’: Widow of pilot on doomed Lion Air flight says direct appeals made to ground Boeing model

Three months after the Lion Air plane her husband was piloting plunged into the sea, Garima Sethi sat with senior officials at the Indonesian carrier in January and urged them — again — to ground the Boeing 737 Max 8.

It wasn’t the first time Sethi had pleaded with Lion Air and Indonesian authorities to ground the model. The Oct. 29 crash near Jakarta claimed 189 lives and led to global probes into potential problems with an anti-stall system on the popular Boeing plane.

But Sethi said Lion Air officials at the time said they needed more information to take such a step. In addition, the officials told Sethi that Boeing had reassured them that the aircraft was safe.

Now, she believes a second crash of a Boeing Max jet, in Ethiopia this month, could have been prevented if the appeals by the victims’ families were given more weight by Lion Air and others.

“We tried to do our part,

Iran Battles To Keep Old Aircraft Flying As U.S. Sanctions Block Path To New Planes

With new U.S. sanctions now starting to bite, Iran’s airlines are being forced to return to old habits by patching up their aging planes rather than firing up the engines on newer models.

After the signing of the Iran nuclear deal in 2015 and the lifting of most international sanctions on the country in January 2016, Iranian airlines jumped at the chance to renew their decrepit fleets. They placed orders for tens of billions of dollars’ worth of new aircraft, with large contracts signed with Boeing, Airbus and ATR.

However, just a handful of the 300 planes that were ordered were delivered before Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions. With that, the chances of new deliveries have dwindled, as has the ability to easily buy spare parts.

Instead of taking delivery of modern aircraft, it seems that local airlines are now having to patch up older planes in their fleet. Iranian media reported earlier this month that Iran Air had overhauled one of its Airbus A300 aircraft following the technical failure of one of its engines.

Iran Air has around a dozen A300 aircraft in its fleet, one of which has been converted to a freighter. Overall, the planes have an average age of close to 33 years, according to Airfleets.net. Only 23 other

Lenovo ThinkPad P52 Review & Rating

We’ve reviewed mobile workstations that rival the power of the Lenovo ThinkPad P52 (starts at $1,160.10; $2,897 as tested), but they’ve been 17.3-inch bruisers. This 15.6-inch ThinkPad is a relative heavyweight compared to the Editors’ Choice Dell Precision 5530. Equipped with solid-state and hard drives, plus a touch screen, it’s about six pounds, versus the Dell’s four and a half. But it’s a 3D-rendering beast, ready to rampage through technical-standard applications, including ones for creating virtual reality (VR) worlds. Its maximum memory, 128GB, is quadruple the Precision’s ceiling. As much as we like thin-and-light laptops, the P52’s stellar performance makes us swing back to the traditional 15.6-inch form factor. It’s our new Editors’ Choice in the mobile workstation category.

Serious Designers Only Need Apply

Positioned above the trimmer ThinkPad P52s, the ThinkPad P52 has considerably more muscle: Even the $1,124 base model carries a six-core Intel Core i7-8750H processor, though its other components are more modest (8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, a 1080p display).

Russian military arrive in Venezuela to discuss ‘training and strategy’

Russian military officials have arrived in Venezuela to discuss equipment maintenance, training and strategy, officials from both countries have said.

Images released of nearly 100 Russian soldiers arriving in Venezuela have reignited speculation about the level of Moscow’s support for the country’s embattled president, Nicolás Maduro.

The explanations by officials for the visit came after a Russian-flagged cargo plane and an airliner were spotted at Maiquetía airport outside Caracas guarded by a contingent of Venezuelan national guardsmen.

A Venezuelan official said the aircraft arrived this weekend as part of ongoing military cooperation between the two allies. An unnamed Russian official told the state news agency RIA Novosti that there was “nothing mysterious” in the visit.

In a phone call with his Russian counterpart, the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, called on Russia to “cease its unconstructive behaviour” by supporting Maduro, the state department said on Monday.

The state department spokesman Robert Palladino said Pompeo had spoken to the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, about Venezuela. “The secretary told Russian foreign minister Lavrov that the United States and regional countries will not stand idly by as Russia exacerbates tensions in Venezuela,” Palladino said in a statement that also condemned Russian military support for the “illegitimate regime of Nicolás Maduro”.

Photographs of the planes attracted attention after news reports in January that Russian mercenaries had flown to the country to protect Maduro. Russia’s military has been accused of using its aircraft to provide logistics for
