Hit the Town

Nothing rousts locals like talk of a new spot to eat, hang out, watch the game, and grab a drink. Town Bar Grill, located where the old Grill on Main used to be, landed in Edgartown over the winter, and officially opened for business on Monday, April 29. The restaurant is owned and operated by Boston-based hospitality group Good NU. There was a soft opening last Friday, where I and about 100 other Islanders sampled select menu items, cocktails, and an ample beer and wine list.

I’ll start by setting the scene — the place was packed. It buzzed with the “everybody knows everybody” energy that so readily defines Martha’s Vineyard restaurants. The entrance is met with a large rectangular bar with wraparound seating. There are a couple of high-top tables along a line

History Matters: Claude Shannon Tinkered His Way to Greatness – Petoskey News

Editor’s note: This month’s History Matters article was written by Brian Pearson and Phil Alexander. Both serve on the organization’s steering committee. History Matters is a collaborative effort of the Otsego County Historical Society, Gaylord Community Schools, Otsego County Library, Otsego County Commission on Aging and the University Center.

April 30, 1916 was by all accounts an average day in the small town of Gaylord. People in Gaylord awoke that Sunday morning to clear skies and the temperature seasonally appropriate in the mid-50s. While many Gaylord families traveled to church, one family — the Shannon family — was engaged in a trip that was a little farther away.

Claude Shannon, Sr., wife Mabel, and 5-year-old daughter Catherine were about to add a new member to their family. It was on that morning Mabel Shannon was in the hospital in Petoskey giving birth to their son Claude Jr. A few days later, they traveled back to their home on North Center Avenue in Gaylord to continue their lives as a family of four.

In 1916 no one could have predicted the significant impact that birth would have on Gaylord, the United States or the world.

Claude Shannon Jr. would grow up to become a world-renowned mathematician and electrical engineer. But in the 1920s and ‘30s, he was a normal child growing up in a small Northern Michigan town. Young Shannon loved to be involved in activities, especially experimenting and exploring. He was a cub scout, played in the community band, delivered newspapers and most

The many human errors that brought down the Boeing 737 Max

The first sign of trouble appeared just after takeoff.

Inside the cockpit of PK-LQP, a brand-new Boeing 737 Max belonging to Lion Air, the stick shaker on the captain’s side began to vibrate. Stick shakers are designed to warn pilots of an impending stall, which can cause a dangerous loss of control. They’re unmistakably loud for that reason.

But the airplane was flying normally, nowhere near a stall. The captain ignored it.

About 30 seconds later, he noticed an alert on his flight display — IAS DISAGREE — which meant that the flight computer had detected a sensor malfunction. This required a bit more attention.

A modern-day passenger airplane is less like a racecar and more like a temperamental printer: you spend more time monitoring and checking systems than you do actually driving the thing. So the captain passed control of the aircraft to the first officer and began the troubleshooting process from memory.

Like all commercial aircraft, the Boeing 737 Max has multiple levels of redundancy for its important systems. In the cockpit, there are three flight computers and digital instrument panels operating in parallel: two primary systems and one backup. Each system is fed by an independent set of sensors. In this case, the captain checked both instrument panels against the backup, and he found that the instruments on his side — the left side — were getting bad data. So with the turn of a dial, the captain switched the primary

Pentagon watchdog: US no longer tracking Taliban gains in Afghanistan

HEIGHTENED INSECURITY IN AFGHANISTAN: The latest quarterly report to Congress by the Pentagon’s special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction is rife with bad news about how the war against the Taliban is going. But the most telling metric is no longer available. NATO’s Operation Resolute Support has stopped producing its assessment of how many Afghans live in districts under government versus Taliban control and influence.

“Despite its limitations, the control data was the only unclassified metric provided by RS that consistently tracked changes to the security situation on the ground,” the SIGAR reports. “While the data did not on its own indicate the success or failure of the South Asia strategy, it did contribute to an overall understanding of the situation in the country.”

In a response that the independent watchdog included in an annex to the report, the headquarters of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan said the district stability assessment is no longer being produced because it was of “limited decision-making value” to the U.S. commander of the NATO mission, Gen. Scott Miller.

“The latest data from the few remaining publicly available measures of the security situation in Afghanistan — enemy-initiated attacks, general [Afghan National Defense and Security Forces] casualty trends, and security incidents — show that Afghanistan experienced heightened insecurity over the winter months while the United States and the Taliban held talks in Qatar, thus far without the participation of the Afghan government,” wrote John Sopko, the special inspector general, in the preface to the

An Air New Zealand Dreamliner, in miniature

Five months of work went into creating this incredible scale model of an Air New Zealand Dreamliner.

Ramy RC, from Frankfurt, Germany, created the remote-controlled miniature Boeing 787-9 – “and it turned out the most beautiful airplane I’ve ever built,” he said.

With no blueprints publicly available, Ramy had to painstakingly design and build everything himself, working from pictures to scale each part so it looked perfect.

But the parts also had to work – Ramy designs his planes so they can fly as remote-controlled craft, with most able to stay in the air for around 15 minutes.

“I’m not an engineer or a pilot, It’s just my hobby, I learned everything by myself,” Ramy said. “I’ve been building airplanes for almost 7 years.”

Ramy RC builds his planes from scratch, designing every part from pictures of the full-size aircraft.

Rock & roll, vintage cars and airplanes in flight. Singer with Ohio Express still going strong with all of them

LEXINGTON, Ohio — When you see Tim Corwin in his auto body shop, he may have in his hand a microphone for singing in a casino, or a wrench for repairing a high-end foreign sports car, or a joy stick for maneuvering a high-flying model airplane. He is at home with all of them.

He talks at a mile a minute about all of his passions. When I went to his auto body shop in Lexington, Ohio to interview him, he began to tell stories before cameraman Steve Pullen could pin a microphone to his lapel.

His stories slip from one subject to another as easily as he maneuvers through his shop, which is filled with cars, papers, photographs of his rock group and model airplanes hanging from the ceiling.

He is the lead singer of the rock group Ohio Express. The members are grey-haired now, but they began when their locks had no grey and were cut in a Beatles style.

“The band thing was something that came about when we were in the 60s and everybody is in high school,” said Corwin, describing the beginning of the group.

“The Beatles came out with ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ and we thought, ‘Man! Wouldn’t it be nice to be in a band?'” he concluded with a smile as wide as the fins of a 1960 Buick parked just outside his shop.

With that, several guys from the Lexington and Mansfield area got together and began to strum a few tunes. In a short

‘Making history’: Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue will feature a model in a burkini and hijab

“I wanted people to see that you could still be really cute and modest at the same time,” said Halima Aden, shown here at an event in Los Angeles. (Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images for UOMA Beauty)

Historically, Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue has been known for showing skin, and lots of it.

But this year’s edition, which lands on newsstands next week, has a twist: It will be the first to feature a model dressed conservatively in a hijab and a burkini, the full-coverage swimsuit worn by some Muslim women that leaves only the hands, feet and face exposed. Halima Aden, a Somali American model who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya, “has proved that there is a place for modest Muslim women in the fashion industry,” the magazine announced Monday, declaring that the 21-year-old would be “making history.”

For Aden, that’s nothing new. Her modeling career got a jump-start after she defied expectations by entering the Miss Minnesota USA pageant in 2016, hoping to prove that observant Muslim women who wear headscarves aren’t being oppressed. Though she didn’t win the competition, her striking looks and broad smile caught
