April 30, 1916 was by all accounts an average day in the small town of Gaylord. People in Gaylord awoke that Sunday morning to clear skies and the temperature seasonally appropriate in the mid-50s. While many Gaylord families traveled to church, one family — the Shannon family — was engaged in a trip that was a little farther away.
Claude Shannon, Sr., wife Mabel, and 5-year-old daughter Catherine were about to add a new member to their family. It was on that morning Mabel Shannon was in the hospital in Petoskey giving birth to their son Claude Jr. A few days later, they traveled back to their home on North Center Avenue in Gaylord to continue their lives as a family of four.
In 1916 no one could have predicted the significant impact that birth would have on Gaylord, the United States or the world.
Claude Shannon Jr. would grow up to become a world-renowned mathematician and electrical engineer. But in the 1920s and ‘30s, he was a normal child growing up in a small Northern Michigan town.
