A Mother’s Promise: Against All Odds, Butler Senior is Ready to Graduate

The Alumni Association has announced Butler University’s Top 100 students, honoring the top juniors and seniors for the 2017–2018 academic year.

The list is below, and Butler Collegian coverage is here.

The Top 100 students are determined by the Top 100 Selection Committee composed of representatives of each of the six colleges, student affairs, academic affairs, and alumni. Each candidate is judged against the core values of the program on a numeric scale. At the end of the judging period, all scores are tabulated, and the Top 100 students are selected.

Horizons students present spring projects | Free Content

Horizons Exploratory Academy students presented their spring semester projects Monday evening at the spring “walkabout.”

Their efforts covered a wide variety of subjects from mandalas to aeronautics, and each student gave a visual and an oral presentation to visitors at the alternative high school.

Parents, friends, school staff and school board members were in attendance at the biannual academic event.

Students receive credit for their projects and their presentations and chose their own projects based on their interests and academic goals.

Clayton Church, a senior, who is already pursuing a career in welding, did his project on historical metal work in the Mesopotamian, Viking and Roman cultures.

Church built his own forge for one of last year’s projects and this year put it to use creating representations of metal tools and weapons from each culture.

His first piece was a pair of Roman tongs used in metal work.

He also hand forged a Viking seax knife, a Roman battle axe head and a Mesopotamian spearhead.

Church said he didn’t have some of the equipment used by more advanced metal workers and mainly just used heat, metal and a hammer to make the artifacts.

He also had to do a lot of research into the forging methods and culture of each civilization for his maps and his oral presentation.

Keagan Haeck, 19, and Jack Leddington, a junior, presented on aeronautics with a visual demonstration of how the parts of an airplane work to maneuver the craft using a working model craft.

The pair had also created mock-ups of other aircraft and demonstrated

Frankfurt Airport resumes flights after drone sighting

The operator of Frankfurt airport, Fraport, said air traffic had resumed after a drone sighting.

Flights at Germany’s busiest hub had been grounded for around an hour on Thursday morning.

Around 70 flights were cancelled due to the drone sighting, an airport spokesperson confirmed to news agency AFP.

Frankfurt police have launched an investigation and are using a helicopter to determine the reason for the disturbance to the airport.

Frankfurt Airport is Germany’s biggest airport and it’s busiest passenger hub — serving over 64 million passengers in 2017.

Concerning rise in drone disruptions

Drone sightings have caused similar problems in recent months. In March, Frankfurt Airport was closed for around 30 minutes, while in December London’s Gatwick Airport suffered three days of travel chaos due to drone activity.

As drones have become more popular and more easily accessible, they pose a serious problem for airports which are testing new measures to ensure air traffic safety.

Last year, the German air traffic control group DFS saw a massive spike in the number of disruptions due to drones. They logged 158 disruptions in 2018, compared to 88 in 2017. Most of the disruptions hit Frankfurt, followed by Berlin’s Tegel Airport.

In Germany, it is illegal to fly drones over airport runways, large gatherings, hospitals, prisons and train tracks. In areas where they are allowed, drones are not permitted to fly higher than 100 meters (328 feet). There are certain exceptions for devices that are flown on special airfields for model airplanes.

Inside the Air Force’s Plan to Revolutionize Pilot Training

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to correct inaccurate information provided to Military.com describing Air Force secretary Heather Wilson’s visit to Austin.

When Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson visited AFWERX’s Pilot Training Next program in Austin, Texas, last year, she watched as trainees took flight from the seats in front of her — through the use of virtual reality.

Officials with Air Education and Training Command (AETC) are now gearing up to present Wilson’s successor with a business case for more widespread use of the system, within the force.

The focus on simulation comes as Air Force leaders work to overhaul the pilot training curriculum, introducing one that augments time airborne in the cockpit with simulators and technology on the ground. The Air Force overall is readying itself for the possibility of complex conflict with a peer-level adversary equipped with long-range missiles and advanced combat aircraft. It’s a future that may represent a strong contrast to recent decades, in which the Air Force has flown in largely uncontested airspace supporting ground troops.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Gets Flight Control Revamp Mandate From FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated that Boeing apply changes to some parts of the 787 Dreamliner. Changes are also expected to be applied to the jet’s flight control software.

According to Reuters, the FAA mandate was rolled out to address what the regulator referred to as “unsafe” operating procedures tracked from some parts of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Boeing said the mandate was related to service bulletins released by the American jet maker in 2017 and 2018 that revealed damage-prone areas in the 787 Dreamliner’s tire and wheel “threat zones.”

Amid criticism and scrutiny from global regulators, Boeing stressed that the FAA directive was already resolved. “This issue has been long since resolved with system improvements that have been incorporated into production for all 787 models,” the airplane maker said.

This is not the first time the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was caught in controversy. In a New York Times report published last month, employees claimed that the South Carolina factory working on the model was home to poor production practices.

The report cited internal emails and interviews with current and former employees. Some employees said the Boeing 787 Dreamliner factory prioritized quantity over quality in its production. The company has since denied all claims.

Another Boeing model, the 737 Max, is also under the watchful eyes of international agencies and aviation regulators. The jet has been grounded worldwide following Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crash in October and March respectively.

State commits $16M to clean former mill site of contaminants

EVERETT — One day, cargo ships stretching 1,000 feet in length could berth at Port of Everett’s South Terminal, where workers would unload shipments of large airplane parts destined for the Boeing factory.

But first the port must deal with thousands of tons of contaminated sediment, a legacy of a century of sawmill and pulp mill operations, as well as enlarge the existing berth by 30 percent.

While a little of the work is done, it’s going to cost in the neighborhood of $105 million and take three to five years to finish it all.

Port officials don’t have all the money in hand. They did receive good news in April as lawmakers earmarked $16.25 million for the project in the next state capital budget.

Those dollars will come out of the state’s Model Toxics Control Account, which was reformulated this year to enable the state to pledge bigger sums to larger cleanups — like this one.

“We really appreciate all of the support the Department of Ecology has provided us to get this level of resources,” said Lisa Lefeber, the port’s deputy executive director. “We’re finally getting to the point that we have the legislative framework in place to know the state will be there when we’re ready to go.”

Weyerhaeuser is the former owner of the South Terminal property, also known as the Mill A site.

From the 1890s to 1980, the firm conducted a slew of wood-related industrial operations such as pulp manufacturing, saw milling, ship

Maury County unearths landfill vote

The Maury County Commission will consider reopening the landfill at Chickasaw Trace Park less than 1 mile from the Duck River.

The decision to unearth previously tabled discussions of the landfill’s potential reopening followed a near unanimous vote by the county’s Health and Environment Committee during its monthly meeting on Monday. Health and Environment Committee members Ken Banks, Linda Whiteside, Brain McKelvy and Wayne Patters voted in approval of decision to reconsider the landfill in a 4-1 decision.

Newly appointed commissioner for District 1, Banks said the county is losing money by sending half-full truckloads of waste south despite charged for the weight of a full shipment.

“It is my understanding that if the trucks that haul 22 tons only have 19 tons of trash in them, and we are still charged the full weight,” Banks said.

The commissioner said he is supportive of a proposed plan to purchase an industrial grinder in an effort to minimize the volume of the county’s waste.

“We need to figure something out as the county continues to see more waste from new homes,” Banks said.

District 3 Commissioner Gary Stovall was the sole committee member to oppose the consideration.

“I am opposed for the simple reason that we have already voted for it,” Stovall said. “I don’t want to rehash it again.”

He he thinks it is a priority that the county purchase a grinder and a crusher to minimize the volume of waste being shipped out of the county.

“Let’s leave it alone or start somewhere else,” Stovall
