Experts: Trump’s trade proposals could hit South Carolina hard

South Carolina, a state that turned out heavily in support of Donald Trump for president, could be one of the states hardest hit by a potential trade war with Mexico and Canada if the new president succeeds in a push to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement as he’s said he would, experts say.

Trump’s tough talk on trade ramped up during his transition period and escalated during his first week in office with his administration floating a proposal Thursday to place a 20 percent tax on Mexican goods entering the United States, which administration officials later said was only one option.

A move like that would almost certainly draw tariffs on U.S. goods shipped to Mexico in retribution, said Scott Baier, interim chair of Clemson University’s economics department and an adviser on international trade issues under President George W. Bush.

And that would damage one of South Carolina’s burgeoning sectors – exports to Mexico and Canada, which had grown 83 percent in the last 10 years to nearly $6.2 billion in 2015, equal to one-fifth of all of the state’s exported goods, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.

That makes South Carolina one of the states most susceptible to a trade war due to its reliance on international trade following a resurgence of manufacturing in recent years, according to a CNBC report that cited the state as among the top 10 states that would be hurt by a North American trade war.

“Potential trade conflicts that the Trump administration is signaling would have

Gus Grissom: Hoosier hero remembered 50 years after Apollo 1 disaster – WNDU

When you hear about Gus Grissom, you may think of the Penn-Harris-Madison middle school or Grissom Air Force Base.

But to Grissom’s family, he is Virgil Ivan Grissom, a boy born in southern Indiana.

On the 50th anniversary of his January 27, 1967, death, we remember the Hoosier Virgil Grissom, who lost his life with two other astronauts during training. They were doing a pre-flight test for the Apollo mission that would eventually land a man on the moon.

Virgil Ivan Grissom was born during the Great Depression on April 3, 1926, in Mitchell, Indiana.

“He made model airplanes and always dreamed of flying. As a matter of fact, he traded his first shotgun in to take his first airplane ride. So he was always looking to the skies,” said his cousin, Steve Grissom.

He was the oldest of four kids and a Boy Scout growing up. In school, he didn’t get the best grades.

“He didn’t see a lot of interest in those subjects that he wasn’t interested in. But if you look at his math and his science grades, they were well above average,” Steve said.

Gus Grissom enjoyed sports and was very competitive, but he never became a star athlete.

“He was always trying to show that he could do the things the bigger kids could because he wasn’t very big. Five-foot-four and 100 pounds soaking wet is not what a football coach or basketball coach in Indiana is looking for,” Steve said.

But Grissom was looking to fight in World War II.

See Lady Gaga’s flying dress at this new exhibit on drones

Expect to here a lot of buzz this spring over a new exhibit about drones at The Intrepid Air Space Museum—thanks, in no small part, to a “flying” dress designed for Lady Gaga that will serve as the show’s centerpiece.

New York is no stranger to drones, of course, but aside from knowing that drones can deliver missiles (and hopefully, someday, packages from Amazon) to their front doors, most New Yorkers probably don’t know all that much about the technology. The Intrepid show, titled “Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?,” aims to remedy that with a look at drones, and their surprisingly long (dating to World War I) history. Opening May 10, the exhibit will feature all kinds of actual drones along with model airplanes, photos, blueprints for future designs, and yes, the dress. Dubbed the Volantis, the garment is really a remotely controlled platform capable of moving several feet off the ground courtesy of rotors mounted to the end of six arms that radiate from a central post, rising behind the pilot (in this case, Gaga). There’s a cockpit of sorts fronted by a female torso molded out of carbon fiber (the rest of the vehicle is made out of titanium).

Created especially for Gaga, the Volantis was developed by London-based fashion and technology company Studio XO, and was originally test flown in 2013 inside a Brooklyn warehouse. No word yet on whether Gaga will drop by the Intrepid show and take it for another spin.

After years of organizing the AirExpo, Eden Prairie museum now showcases aviation history year-round

The smell of oil filled the air in the brightly lit airplane hangar crammed with history.

From a 1940s Jeep to a P-51 D Mustang — one of only six in the world to return home from World War II combat in Europe — the restored relics are unquestionably the main attractions at a new aviation museum in Eden Prairie.

Although air museums are closing elsewhere, the nonprofit Wings of the North bucked the trend and opened a museum just over a year ago after nearly two decades of organizing the annual AirExpo aviation show in Eden Prairie. It now showcases history year-round.

“That’s what we’re all about, telling the history,” director Bob Jasperson said. “We don’t want this history to be lost.”

The Wings of the North museum, which will mark its second year this summer, is housed in an office building and hangar at Flying Cloud Airport. It relocated there last fall after rapidly outgrowing its previous space at the airport.

The museum now includes a library, gift shop, art gallery and restored warplanes on loan from collectors. Aviation artifacts fill the displays, from a painting signed by the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders of 1942 to a collection of hand-painted model airplanes.
