Vacaville woman goes vintage when it comes to sewing machines

FAIRFIELD — Carla Murphy is a treadle rebel.

The longtime Vacaville resident shuns modern-day sewing machines in favor of those dating back to the late 1890s and early 1900s. They are powered by her feet, “aerobic sewing” as she calls it, and her hands.

“I don’t have to feel so guilty sitting at a (sewing) machine so long,” she said, with a smile.

Murphy will bring her machines to the North Wind Quilters Guild biennial show March 25-26 in Fairfield. She will also offer those attending a chance to experience how machine sewing was done a few generations ago.

Her parents owned Pedron’s Fashion Fabrics in San Jose. Murphy’s first sewing project was a smock dress, that just required the side seems be sewn.

That sewing machine remains with her today. She uses the 45-year-old-plus model only when she needs to.

“The old ones are so dependable,” she said.

She began seeking vintage sewing machines in late 2012. The first was a 1917 Singer Red Eye Treadle Model 66. The cost: $50.

Murphy, who is member of the North Wind Quilters Guild, completed her first quilt on the machine in 2013. It’s a red and blue log cabin pattern.

The oldest sewing machine in her collection dates between 1891 and 1904. Murphy found the machine with the assistance of a fellow Treadle On Gathering and Academy (TOGA) member. It was purchased in February 2016. Murphy made a Civil War X Lattice quilt on it.

It is also her latest acquisition.

Calgary man constructs realistic 747 cockpit for flight simulator in basement

The basement of Marco Governali’s home in southeast Calgary hosts an unusual addition that would be the envy of many an aviation buff.

A six year labour of love landed Governali all of the necessary components to reconstruct a 747 cockpit inside his home for a near-perfect flight simulator. A recent visit from a professional pilot confirmed the hobbyist’s attention to detail.

“He said ‘Marco, this is really, really good. I’m very impressed’,” said Governali. “The only thing missing is the motion.”

“Every switch is where it’s supposed to be.”

The cockpit was constructed using a combination of authentic, replica and parts Governali constructed himself after not being able to locate a source including panels and doors. “My cockpit would be about 40 per cent authentic, real parts from dismantled, recycled 747s,” said Governali. “It’s a mishmash of every country on this planet.”

The Calgarian says he’s been fascinated by aircraft since childhood but his first experience with a flight simulator, a basic, single screen model, occurred 25 years ago. Despite his appreciation for their work, Governali has no desire to become a pilot. “What really fascinates me is the airplane itself. I wouldn’t really want to be a pilot and fly from city to city and sleep hotel to hotel.”

Governali says he’s invested approximately $25,000 into his realistic flight simulator and he’ll continue his effort to find authentic pieces to replace  replica parts.

The Calgarians says he’s aware of four other people around the world who have their own 747 flight simulators. To date, Governali

Inside the Gates: Alaska Air National Guard says goodbye to C-130 era – KTVA.com

ANCHORAGE –

Earlier this week, after four decades in service, the Alaska Air National Guard’s last two C-130 Hercules aircraft flew away for good. The plane has been the workhorse for the Air Guard. Its departure is the end of an era in the organization’s 70-year history.

“The last 41 years of that have been with the C-130,” said Lt. Col. Michael Cummings, commander of the 144th Airlift Squadron.

“Longer than the state has actually been a state, this unit has been running and flying tactical airlift,” added Tech Sgt. Colton Nelson, C-130 loadmaster with the 144th.

The tactical airlift mission means the 144th picked up and dropped off people and supplies, when and where they’re needed. Many missions involved humanitarian aid around the country and the world on some of the most difficult days, like 9/11.

“We were the only airplane flying in the United States because we were taking blood from Alaska to New York,” Cummings said. “We had a crew that took off here on Sept. 12 and was basically cleared by the controllers who said, ‘yeah, you can do whatever you want because you’re the only people up here.’”

Their mission also covered every inch of the state, in the bad times and the good, like the annual Operation Santa Claus, when crew members brought presents and holiday cheer to remote communities.

“Any time the governor or the people

Danish boy finds remains of World War II Nazi plane, pilot

March 10 (UPI) — A 14-year-old Danish boy made an unlikely discovery as part of a school assignment for research on World War II — the wreckage of a Nazi plane and remains of a pilot.

Daniel Rom Kristiansen was using a metal detector Tuesday to search through a field behind his farm near Birkelse, Denmark, after his father, Klaus, had said his grandfather mentioned seeing a German plane crash there.

“When my son Daniel was recently given homework about World War II, I jokingly told him to go out and find the plane that is supposed to have crashed out in the field,” the elder Kristiansen told The Local.

He stumbled upon the wreckage. The family used a trencher to find bits of clothing and bones.

“We tried carefully digging with a trencher. More and more parts came up and the further we went, the more we found,” Kristiansen said to DR P4.

They called the police. Then the German Embassy in Denmark and bomb disposal experts arrived.

The wreckage was sent to the Historical Museum of Northern Jutland. Torben Sarauw, the curator and head of archaeology at the museum, told CNN that it is believed the pilot came from a nearby training base in the city of Aalborg.

The pilot was found with his suit, hat, two Danish coins, food stamps for an on-base canteen and three unused condoms.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 plane was among 33,000 produced from 1936 until the war ended.

Germany invaded Denmark on April 9,
