Annual remote control flea market sees surge in interest

TURNERS FALLS — As David Korpiewski watched over his table of remote control planes, customers regularly stepped up to peruse his collection, seeming to always address him by name.

The sixth annual Giant Western Massachusetts Remote Control Flea Market, held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Franklin County Technical School, attracted a close-knit community of hobbyists that came from across New England.

“We kind of all know each other here,” said Korpiewski, president of the Franklin County Radio Control Club which organizes the flea market each year.

The more than 40-year-old club, an Academy of Model Aeronautics chartered club with 25 current members, promotes the use of remote control planes, drones, helicopters, combat wings or anything that will fly under radio control. The clubhouse, located at the Turners Falls Airport, has the only geotextile runway within 200 miles, Korpiewski said, and hosts drone racing, combat nights where members compete to cut streamers with wings, and general flying on Sundays.

Filling a need

Noticing a lack of remote control flea markets in the area after one held in Vernon, Conn. ceased, Korpiewski said the club decided six years ago to offer its own, bringing hobbyists together over an eclectic variety of remote control craft including planes, boats, helicopters and cars.

Though it attracts familiar faces, the flea market also garners new interest every year, Korpiewski said, and sometimes leads the club to gain new members.

“This is our biggest one ever,” he said, observing the 40 tables of items, an increase from the usual 25.

Meteorological Mayday! Heaviest Snow Bands Should Stay North/west of MSP Monday

When Slush Falls On Freshly-Mowed Lawns on May 1: Mayday!

Don’t look now but Mother Nature is having another nervous breakdown. A loopy jet stream is helping to spawn jaw-dropping extremes: record 80s and 90s out east, while Denver picks up half foot of slushy snow.

An atmospheric tug-of-war over the central USA may produce life-threatening flooding from the Ozarks into the Ohio Valley. Over 10 inches of rain may fall by Wednesday; a tropical storm’s worth of moisture.

For the record, weather impacts about a third of America’s GDP; roughly $6 TRILLION worth of economic activity is at the mercy of the elements. And there’s mounting evidence that weather extremes are trending even more extreme over time.

Expect glimmers of sun and 50s today, the better day to mow the lawn or go for a walk. An impressive, almost March-like storm pushes a cold rain into town Sunday. The column of air overhead cools Monday as rain mixes with slushy snow. Lawns may get slushed up in the metro, but the best chance of plowable (3-inch-plus) amounts may set up from Alexandria to Bemidji, Brainerd and Hibbing.

The best part of a freak May snow? A higher sun angle should melt whatever falls within 24 hours.

ECMWF Snowfall Potential. As good as the European model is – it is not infallible. No weather model is. So look at the trends, not specific amounts, not yet. The metro area may pick up an inch of slush on lawns Monday, but the greatest potential

The Gatesway Balloon Festival returns to Broken Arrow after years of being hosted in Claremore

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Tim Tipton said the Chisholm Trail South Event Park is the perfect location to fly his model airplanes. He also said it’ll be a great location for the Gatesway Balloon Festival.

“I think it’s wonderful and this is a great facility to do it,” said Tipton.

Organizers said the Balloon Festival originated in Broken Arrow, but has been held in Claremore the past eight years. They said moving the festival back to Broken Arrow will give the city’s economy a boost.

“Bringing 40,000 people to a location for a weekend and having the economic value that it’s going to bring to the city, it’s going to be great,” Gatesway Foundation CEO Jim Pacula.

Organizers said this year’s event will be even bigger than years past, with roughly 35 balloons, a carnival and car show.

“We have more space here to use, much more parking,” said Pacula.

Tipton said he’s looking forward to taking his family to the Balloon festival at this favorite park.

“This would be a place to bring my grandkids, they would love to see that,” said Tipton.

The Balloon Festival is set for September 15th through the 17th.  All of the proceeds will benefit people with disabilities.
