Model plane competition set for June 17, 18

model airplanes of up to 50 pounds will compete for prizes June 17 and 18 at the International Model Aerobatics Club competition at the Smoky Hill Model Flying Club field, about half a mile east of Ohio Street on Schilling Road.

The competition will run from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 17 and 9 a.m. to noon June 18. Visitors are welcome at no cost.

The planes are from 30 percent to 40 percent of the size of full-scale competition aircraft and are highly maneuverable. Some have the power to hover or to perform in a vertical position even though they are not helicopters. Radio-control electronics are used.

The competition consists of pilots flying their planes in a prescribed routine, depending on the class of competition they have entered. Judges observe the flights and score the pilots according to the skill demonstrated. Routines are increasingly difficult, according to the level of competition. Pilots get to fly several rounds and scoring is averaged to achieve their respective placement.

Beetles Swarm Peabody Museum

The Peabody Museum’s latest exhibit — the opening of which drew an overflow crowd to the third floor — combines powerful two and three dimensional artworks that will forever change your perception of beetles. Yes, beetles, those small flying and crawling insects many of us commonly, if not mistakenly, call bugs.

New Haven sculptor Gar Waterman has been imbuing small creatures and natural forms with heroic stature for decades. Together with photographer William Guff, the artists’ intriguing and comparatively monumental forms and images now grace the Peabody’s new exhibit, playfully entitled “Beauty and the Beetle: Coleoptera in Art Science.”

True to the title, actual beetle specimens are strategically placed in the exhibit, allowing viewers to compare forms that are usually the purview of entomologists with the two artists’ creations and interpretations.

Waterman, who said he had fun working with the museum’s entomologists and staff on “a most elegant beetle inspired art/science exhibit,” describes the sculpting method used in this exhibit as bricolage (from the French verb “to tinker”) — the construction of a work created with found objects or whatever materials are available.

“These sculptures,” states Waterman on an exhibit display card, “were initially inspired by metal stampings that resembled insect legs, cast offs from an automobile brake parts manufacturer, and what began as found object art eventually evolved into a wonderfully unorthodox science lesson in entomology. The more I studied beetles to inform my art work, the more fascinated I became with their extraordinary biology and

Woman forced out of home after it was transformed on TV

Published: June 1, 2017, 8:17 pm

(INSIDE EDITION)

(INSIDE EDITION) — A Michigan mom who got her dream home on reality TV is now living in a nightmare.

Arlene Nickless’ home was completely transformed on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in 2008. But now, nine years later, she has been evicted.

Inside Edition cameras were rolling as she and her family scrambled to pack her furniture and personal belongings out of the 3,200-square-foot house and into a moving van.

“The sheriff could show up anytime,” she said. “We’d have to leave whatever’s left behind. I haven’t had a chance to go through everything.”

Arlene and her family were chosen for the TV show after the sudden death of her husband Tim, a critical care nurse. She then struggled to raise their three children alone.

After hearing her story, Ty Pennington and his design team showed up and hundreds of neighbors pitched in to help.

“It was an answer to a prayer, 100 percent,” she recalled.

She says she was able to afford the $30,000 mortgage at first, but over the years, property taxes tripled.

“It took a few unexpected emergencies and I got behind,” she said. “I tried to work with the mortgage company, but my efforts were shoved under the carpet.”

It was not long before an eviction notice

Welcome to the mecca of the electric cycling craze

For Tony Mendoza, a Fullerton physical therapist, his electric-boosted wheels rolled him into a new sport – mountain biking – and a new appreciation of his hometown.

“I’ve lived in Orange County my whole life, but I’ve never taken advantage of the Fullerton Loop,” Mendoza says of the 11-mile, off-road trail system that circles downtown. “You feel like you’re on vacation out in the woods.”

Just a week after buying his first electric-assist mountain bike at Fullerton’s Electric Bicycle Center, Mendoza exchanged the nearly $4,500, full-suspension Haibike for the next model up. Though Mendoza also rides Harley-Davidson motorcycles, he prefers the charge his mountain bike delivers.

Tony Mendoza rides an electric mountain bike from Electric Bicycle Center along Fullerton Loop.

“I can’t run anymore since I entered my 50s, but the bike gives me the feeling of being a kid again,” Mendoza says.

It’s not the first time store owner Sam Townsend has heard that sentiment.

“Riding an electric bike is like finding the fountain of youth,” says Townsend, whose Electric Bicycle Center may have Orange County’s largest selection with more than two dozen brands in every e-powered form imaginable – pedal-assist or throttle-control mountain, commuter, hybrid, trike, folding, cargo and cruiser.

“I think this is the pivotal year for electric bikes,” Townsend says. He’s bet big that it will be. He recently doubled the size of his store, sold off his gas-powered inventory and offers only electric bikes now.

In the span of a few hours, the store attracts shoppers of all ages, though
