Fox Valley Aero Club to host show June 22-24 in St. Charles

Sammy Werderich, a junior member of the Fox Valley Aero Club, checks out details on the Spirit of St. Louis radio-controlled airplane. The club will host its fourth annual Windy City Warbirds Classics RC Air Show from June 22 to 24 at 3821 Karl Madsen Drive in St. Charles.

ST. CHARLES – The Fox Valley Aero Club is sponsoring its fourth annual Windy City Warbirds Classics RC Air Show by having its lens focused on the past.

This year is the 90th anniversary of the Spirit of St. Louis transatlantic flight from New York to Paris, and it presents a timely opportunity to see a custom, giant-scale, radio-controlled model of the Spirit of St. Louis airplane from June 22 to 24.

“This carefully built, giant-scale, radio-control model airplane and other giant-scale warbirds and classic airplanes will be filling the skies with nonstop flight demonstrations starting at 9 a.m.,” a news release stated. “All planes will have at least 80-inch wingspans, with biplanes having 60-inch wingspans. Some will have wingspans over 20 feet. There will be over 90 pilots from seven states.”

The Spirit of St. Louis made flight history when Charles A Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris in 33 hours and 30 minutes. When he landed safely at Le Bourget field near Paris, he was greeted by a crowd of 100,000.

“We at Fox Valley Aero Club really enjoy bringing this event to the community,” John Fischer, event chairman, said in the release. “The atmosphere, the sounds and

It’s a bird … it’s a RC plane

More than 300 giant scale radio-controlled planes will be on display at Fox Valley Aero Club’s fourth annual Windy City Warbirds and Classics RC Air Show beginning June 22.

Also on display will be feature scale World War I biplanes, World War II aircraft, miniature turbine scale jets and a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis plane. More than 90 pilots from seven surrounding states and two countries are expected to attend.

Event chairman John Fischer has been an RC airplane hobbyist for 20 years and a member of the Fox Valley Aero Club for 12 years.

“The hobby just kind of builds,” he said. “I like to fly and build model airplanes because it gives me great enjoyment to build an airplane that mimics the real thing. The true enjoyment for me comes with flying them.”

PEEK desktop 3D printing is here – INTAMSYS FUNMAT HT full technical specs and pricing

Professional 3D printer manufacturer INTAMSYS, headquartered in Shanghai, has released the FUNMAT HT desktop 3D printer. Capable of 3D printing high temperature materials like PEEK, Ultem and PPSU, the FUNMAT HT opens up access to industrial plastics for a fraction of the cost of typical high performance machines.

Low-budget access to 3D printing for engineers

First launched at CES 2017, the FUNMAT HT is a machine devised for engineering firms to test the potential of 3D printing at high temperatures. It is distributed with two interchangeable hot ends, one high temp and one low temp, preventing material contamination that can result in the failed performance of a print.

3D printing up to 450℃

The high temperature hot end is capable of reaching temperatures up to 450°C, which in turn opens up the mechanical and resistant properties possible.

PEEK is a medical-grade plastic that, for its mechanical robustness, is also in use in the aerospace industry and the standard for interior parts of the Airbus A350 XWB commercial airplane. And PPSU, another material compatible with the FUNMAT HT, is chemical resistant and suited for automotive, aerospace, and plumbing applications.

The lower temperature hot end, by comparison, is capable of working with standard 3D printer materials such as PLA and ABS. This allows for a versatile use of the machine, switching between potential end-user parts and prototyping.

High performance at a low price

In order to produce such high performance parts,

Aircraft Siblings: Boeing Jets Built for Both Commercial and Military Use

The P-8A Poseidon is extremely recognizable given its similarity to the Boeing 737 (Photo: Boeing)

While it has become easy to notice a Boeing 737 or Airbus A330 given its popularity with airlines, some might not know that the same production line that produced a Southwest Airlines 737-800 produced a military model of the same jet. In this two-part series, we will look into several commercial aircraft with military siblings. We will ignore VIP transports like the VC-25 and Boeing 777 VIP, as most political figures use a modified commercial airplane to fly around.

Boeing 367

Even though the Boeing 707 receives the love of being the first successful jet-powered commercial aircraft, the prototype of the Boeing 367 has received much attention in the military world. From the Boeing 367’s design would come the X-135 military models, which would soon become the base for multiple military variants.

The most popular version is the KC-135 Stratotanker, which operates as an air refueler for the United States, France, Turkey, Chile, and Singapore. The tanker has a range of 9,700 nautical miles and can carry 83,000 pounds of fuel. The airframe comes equipped with a single boom on the rear of the airplane for refueling aircraft.

The Boeing 367 has also seen significant use for information and data collection with the creation of the C-135 Stratolifter. Most of these variants, including the OC-135 Open Skies and EC-135 are utilized for telemetry and observation, and have special equipment installed to measure either weapons or weather.

In total, over 800

FAA Issues SAIB For Landing Gear Corrosion in Some Luscombe Aircraft

At the time, the FAA feels the concern addressed in SAIB CE-17-14 does not warrant an airworthiness directive.

The FAA is advising owners and operators of an airworthiness concern with certain Luscombe aircraft models, specifically the need to start inspecting the main landing gear (MLG) legs in order to detect possible corrosion and correct it.

More Details on SAIB CE-17-14

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB CE-17-14) applies to the following Luscombe Aircraft:

  • Model 8 series
  • Model 11A series
  • Model 11E series
  • Phantom 1 series

The agency notes that Luscombe’s Model 8 series airplanes have a “history of MLG failures due to internal corrosion of the MLG lower legs.” This is because the design on the lower leg allows moisture to accumulate inside the leg just above the axle, making it susceptible to corrosion. With internal surface treatment and regular inspection of the lower legs, the risk of lower gear failure due to corrosion may be mitigated.

Recommendations

The FAA recommends that owners/operators of the affected airplanes follow the inspection procedures provided in the Don Luscombe Aviation History Foundation (DLAHF) Service Recommendation (SR) #4, provided on January 22, 1996. (I’ve done some searching, and I can’t find a copy of SR #4 to link to. If anyone knows where one is or has a

Annual Aviation Day: Families get close-up view of planes

A yellow plane maneuvered through the sky with twists and turns as spectators looked on, snapping photos with their cameras or cell phones.

The aerobatic performance was one of two air shows Saturday during the Columbus Municipal Airport’s fourth annual Aviation Day that drew a crowd to the city’s airport, many of them families with young children, who looked on in awe.

Columbus resident Tim Porter came to Aviation Day for the first time with his wife Evy and their three sons, 1-year-old Ransom, 3-year-old Scotty and 5-year-old Evan. Porter said he’s always been interested in airplanes and hopes to obtain his license to fly someday. And he said the event was an opportunity to spend time together as a family.

It also allowed him to introduce his children to something new that they hadn’t seen before, he said.

Residential development squeezes out model airplane club

The West Alabama Aero Modelers club is fishing for a place to fly after learning last month that residential development will force them to vacate the facility they rent at Munny Sokol Park.

The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority built the facility, but the club has been flying in that area since they were founded more than 40 years ago, the club’s then-spokesman Harry McWilliams told The Tuscaloosa News in 2012.

“When the club was started in March of 1975, a couple of the guys talked to PARA about the possibility of leasing them a place to fly,” McWilliams said in 2012. “So from the beginning, PARA has provided the club a place to fly at Sokol Park, even before it was Sokol Park. So you might say they have been a partner to us since the beginning.”

Decades of growth and development on all sides of the WAAM facility have slowly but surely shrunk the airspace in which they can operate, though, and PARA’s director of park operations and development Jay Strickland said the problem has finally come to a head.

“The facility has been in a very good place for them for the 10 years it’s been there but development has squeezed them,” Strickland said. “We’ve tried to help them in every way we can, but they just don’t have enough space to fly anymore.”

For years, pilots flew their model airplanes over an undeveloped field to the east of the WAAM facility’s
