Trains, planes, and … quilts!

You would think when Bob Reutlinger got to retirement age and looked for a hobby it might be building model airplanes. Nope. It turned out to be trains. And if you want to learn a bit about model railroading from a 95 year-old with the enthusiasm of a kid then come and join Bob at the Model Railroad Club exhibit in the basement of the Kohl Building in Stevensville on August 4. What do quilts and trains have in common? Well, they go together like Barbara and Bob Reutlinger.

The way it works for the Corvallis couple is they have a line drawn down the middle of their basement “hobby room.” Her side is festooned with ribbons and awards she has earned for her quilting over the years. His side consists of a bustling model railroad community big enough to get lost in once you start looking around.

Bob is will turn 95 years of age on August 8. It’s a little bit hard to believe, but I’ll take his word for it. After all, he was able to rattle off his life history in a half hour or so without a memory glitch. Better than a lot of us that are 30 years younger could do. Physically, I’d say he’s a little more spry than a lot of us youngsters as well. You should see him duck under the table to pop up inside the command and control center of his model railroad town.

Bob grew up

John Smith of Irondequoit has been coming to the Geneseo Airshow for about 20 years. First, with his son, and this year they were accompanied by his grandson.

“It brings back memories, walking among these planes,” said Smith, who served with the Air Force during the Korean War. He worked on P-36 fighters and B-52 bombers.

Along the flight line of the National Warplane Museum grass airstrip Adam Bork of Fairport was watching a T-6 advanced trainer aircraft loop through the sky with his grandfather, Bill Pierson of Fairport.

The family members shared a love of aviation. Pierson built model planes as a kid and later learned to fly at age 56, and introduced his grandson to planes. Bork became hooked after a

Bringing their love for their hobby to Estevan – Estevan Mercury

It was an opportunity for people from across the province to gather just outside of the Energy City, and celebrate a love for their chosen hobby.

The Sun City Remote-Controlled Club hosted the provincial fun fly on Saturday and Sunday at its site southeast of Estevan. More than 30 people from across the province flocked to the grounds to fly their model airplanes and race their remote-controlled cars, and to discuss their passion for the pursuit.

Art Dougherty, who is the president of the Sun City club, said people from Swift Current, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and other communities came to Estevan. The fun fly is held at a different community each year, and this marked the first time Estevan has hosted the gathering.

“Last year we had our grand opening (of the property), and then we decided we would host the fun fly this year,” Dougherty said while a model airplane buzzed overhead. “It was our turn.”

But it’s not just an event for flying the planes. Dougherty said there is also a strong social component.

“We just talk and fly, and the most important thing is you get to know the other people,” said Dougherty. “It’s a people sport. We see what they’re flying and what you’re flying and compare notes and have fun.”

Technology is always changing, he said. Turbine propeller jets, different airplanes and even drones were part of the show. Drones are growing in popularity, he said, and regulations allow for them to be flown at designated fields such as the Sun City’s

3D Printing News Briefs: July 18, 2017

We’re diving headfirst into some 3D printing legal and business news for today’s 3D Printing News Briefs, and then moving on to an additive manufacturing competition and a new additive manufacturing company, a new hybrid material, and a 3D printed solution to help you beat the summer heat. Shapeways has filed formal comments in the FCC’s net neutrality investigation, while the US Patent and Trademark Office is taking more notice of the 3D printing industry as a whole and Airbus has tapped Stratasys Direct Manufacturing to 3D print airplane parts for its A350 XWB aircraft. Stratasys and nonprofit organization SME have announced the winners of the SkillsUSA Additive Manufacturing Competition, and an engineering firm in the UK has launched a new 3D printing company. Finally, CIKONI is introducing its AdditiveCarbon 3D printing material for hybrid structures, and Kitronik has put out its latest electronics project kit – a 3D printed desk fan.

Shapeways Files Formal Comments on Net Neutrality

Shapeways is weighing in on the subject of net neutrality. It has filed formal comments in the US Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) investigation on net neutrality, which is very important to the success of the Shapeways community. In a blog post, Michael Weinberg explains why open internet is important, how Shapeways “has been able to rely on an open internet since its founding, and how the current investigation undermines that reliance.”

“There have been a number of rounds to the US net neutrality fight since Shapeways was founded. Setting

A Bike Ride Through Wright Brothers Territory | History | Air & Space …

They came up with some of their best ideas while cycling along Dayton’s back roads, Orville on his new Columbia “safety” bicycle (with two small wheels of equal size) and Wilbur on a more modest used model. Wilbur took leisurely bucolic rides, while Orville burned up the track, winning at least three races. It was spring 1892, and Dayton—and the Wrights—were in the midst of a bicycle craze. When the brothers looked for a second profession to supplement their printing business, they had good reason to choose bicycle repair and manufacture. The knowledge they gained in designing and repairing bicycles influenced their later aeronautical experiments, and they used the equipment in their bike repair shop to make glider and airplane parts.

One of the most famous bicycle manufacturers of the day was Dayton, Ohio’s George Huffman, who converted his sewing machine factory to bicycle production in 1892, founding what would later be known as Huffy Bikes. In the 1960s, Huffman’s grandson, Horace—who biked to the factory each day—started the Greater Dayton Bikeway Committee. The committee is responsible for most of Ohio’s 340 miles of bike paths; today, Ohio claims the nation’s largest network of paved trails. These trails, mapped and marked, connect more than a dozen of the state’s most notable aviation sites, separated by distances of four to 30 miles.

The National Park Service offers several bike-with-a-ranger programs, giving visitors the chance to spend a few hours with a knowledgeable guide exploring the sites in the Dayton

Bruce Dickinson Flies Lancaster Bomber Plane Before Iron Maiden’s …

According to CBC News, IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson flew the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s prized Lancaster Bomber plane before the band’s sold-out Toronto show Saturday night (July 15).

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum museum CEO and pilot David Rohrer said that the storied aircraft, nicknamed Vera because of its VRA flight initials, holds a special place in the heart of the British musician.

“The first model airplane he ever built as a young lad was a Lancaster,” Rohrer told CBC News.

The 72-year-old aircraft Dickinson flew is said to be Canada’s only operational Second World War-era Lancaster bomber plane.

During the war, the Lancaster was able to carry 22,000 pounds of bombs.

Rohrer said a total of 7,377 Lancaster planes were built in both the U.K. and Canada.

Following the war, more than 200 Lancaster planes remained in service for Arctic reconnaissance and patrol. The Royal Canadian Air Force discontinued the Lancaster in 1964.

Dickinson, a registered commercial pilot who owns Cardiff Aviation, told Wales Online in a recent interview that he still gets a thrill out of flying, but that it’s a totally different sensation to playing live.

“The satisfaction flying airplanes is getting the job done, but the satisfaction with playing live is external, looking out at all the people looking at you,” he said. “With an airliner, it’s all internal. If you’ve got passengers, nobody goes, ‘Wow! Wasn’t that great?’ They’re thinking about the rest of their day. Your job as an
