Mid State Aeroguidance Club to host annual Fun Fly

For Hub City Times

MARSHFIELD — Members of the Mid State Aeroguidance Club will host their annual Fun Fly on Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the club’s flying field north of Stratford. The event is free to attend and open to the public. Brats, burgers, hot dogs, and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

The club consists of modelers who build, fly, and maintain all types of remote-controlled model airplanes and helicopters. Pilots from other clubs throughout the state will participate in the Fun Fly, demonstrating their skills.

Club members and visiting pilots will fly a variety of craft, including giant-scale, gas-powered aerobatic planes. All pilots must hold a valid Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) membership card. For those interested in seeing demonstrations and learning more about the sport, members will be happy to share their expertise.

“We talk to people about taking lessons on a one-on-one basis,” explained Sandy MacDonald, one of the club’s instructors.

During the winter months, club members also offer instruction in flying small, electric model airplanes at the Marshfield High School field house on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

“We’ve had as many as 12 and as few as three,” noted MacDonald. “If kids let me know, I can bring my buddy box,” which allows a student to fly. Duplicate controls enable the experienced pilot to take over when needed.

“It’s a real trick to learn how to steer when it’s coming towards you because the radio is backwards. The little electrics give a good chance to do

Model planes flying high

THUNDER BAY – It was a perfect weekend to take to the sky and soar high in the air, even if everyone’s feet remained firmly planted on the ground.

model airplane enthusiasts gathered in a field off Highway 61 over the weekend to take part in Lakehead Aeromodellers Flying Flub Air Fest RC Air Show.

The weekend included demonstrations of various model aircraft, from smaller, electric powered planes, helicopters, and drones, all the way to 1/35 scale aerobatic gas powered planes.

“It’s one of those hobbies that it is safer for me to be on the ground,” said Archie Gribben, president of the Lakehead Aeromodellers Flying Club. “And I enjoy it. Building the planes these days is a lost art.”

Gribben has been building and flying model airplanes for 30 years and the Air Show is a great way for model RC pilots to show off their aircraft and skills.

“The guys with the large gas powered planes are a crowd pleaser with the smoke systems and they are impressive,” he said. “The helicopter guys are the same thing, there’s a lot of things you can’t do with a full scale aircraft.”

Dennis Poulin was out on the weekend with his 1/35 scale aerobatic plane modelled after the Russian-built Yak 54. Made out of balsa wood and plywood, the plane is powered by a gasoline twin 100 cc motor, and this year Poulin added a smoke system.

“They love it,” Poulin said of the crowd’s reaction. “It’s awesome. It’s

UPDATE: Price Co. plane wreckage heading to Minneapolis

PRICE COUNTY (WAOW) –

The final pieces of a Cessna 421 aircraft are heading to Minneapolis where a full investigation will be conducted by federal authorities, according to the Price Co. Sheriff’s Office.

The majority of the twin engine aircraft that crashed near Catawba early Saturday morning and killed six people was pulled out Sunday night. On Monday, the final pieces were pulled out of the heavily wooded terrain.

“Being that it was off a roadway in very heavily area, obviously complicates area. Just the vastness of it,” said Lt. Gabe Lind with the Price County Sheriff’s Office. “The investigation has been handed over to primarily the NTSB.”

Lind added that it’s been a rough weekend for first responders.

“Everbody’s just trying to get rotated. Get fresh people in and let people get rest in that need to get rest in,” he said.

People in the small town of Catawba were stunned to hear about the crash.

“Seems like a war zone with so much law around,” said resident Jeff Ratdlaff. “Very sad thing.”

“Couldn’t believe it at first,” said Lee Lemordaux. “Some of the stuff they have to deal with, especially law enforcement [and] fire departments or whatever, it gets messy.”

A final report into what caused the fatal crash will not be released for several months.

Giant model planes flying this weekend over Santa Maria from Elks Unocal Event Center

At just 9 years old, Karsen Gradille is the youngest flyer of the Santa Maria-based Tri-Valley RC Modelers, which builds and flies model airplanes, helicopters, gliders and multirotors of all sizes and types.

This weekend, Karsen, fellow club members and more than 40 radio control enthusiasts from across the state will be flying and displaying giant scale model airplanes at the fifth annual Tri-Valley RC Modelers Fly-in that’s being staged at the Elks Unocal Event Center in Santa Maria.

“I like that you get to fly them and build them,” said Karsen as he explained what he enjoys about model planes, noting he also loves airplanes. “Flying with other people is fun, too.”

Karsen built his first model plane when he was 6, with the help of his grandfather, who introduced the youngster to the hobby when the boy was just a toddler. He now has three model planes and earned the Tri-Valley RC Modelers’ 2016 Junior Flyer of the Year Award.

“This is good, clean fun,” said Bill Tjaden, Tri-Valley RC Modelers member, about the giant scale fly-in that runs through Sunday. “It’s a camping trip with airplanes attached. It’s all about having fun. A bunch of dudes just hanging out.”

A giant scale model airplane has a wingspan that’s greater than 6 feet. Some are powered by pump gas and others by electric mechanisms. The planes can run in the tens of thousands of dollars and the bigger they are, the more expensive the models.

The planes are also available in numerous different models, including high-powered warplanes,

Dover C-5s Still Grounded Amid Search for Replacement Parts

C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft remain on stand-down at Dover Air Force Base as maintenance crews and engineers scramble to replace parts, some of which are no longer manufactured, the head of Air Mobility Command recently told Military.com.

“The mechanism is a screw-type mechanism that allows [the nose of the aircraft] to basically spin down and spin back up,” Gen. Carlton Everhart II, commander of AMC, said in an interview Wednesday. “What we found out, though, is there’s nobody out there manufacturing these anymore.”

The service stopped all C-5M operations from the Delaware base July 18 after two aircraft experienced nose-gear malfunctions overseas. Separate incidents involving C-5M aircraft from Dover occurred May 22 and again July 15 at Naval Station Rota, Spain, the command said at the time.

The nose wheel, which allows the nose landing gear to move up and down, had issues extending, Everhart said. “We found out it was a mechanism in the nose-wheel that was being torn down by just heavy use,” he said.

The issue deals with two ball screws on the nose-gear, which operate in tandem to retract and extend the piece of equipment. “If a single ball screw drive assembly fails and causes binding, the gear cannot operate and will stall the extension or

EAA AirVenture continues through weekend, inspires kids

Oshkosh, Wis (WSAU) — The Experimental Aircraft Association’s world famous AirVenture Fly-in ends on Sunday in Oshkosh, and closing weekend events include a patriotic Saturday afternoon airshow with vintage war birds starting at 3:00, and a spectacular night time air show on Saturday night.

According to EAA communications director Dick Knapinski, “If you’ve never seen a night air show, we really encourage you to do that, because it’s something very special.”

There’s also a full schedule of activities for the kids that continues through the weekend.  “Each year more than 25,000 kids go through our KidVenture area, where they can come in and fly flight simulators,” Knapinski explained. “They can build model rockets, model airplanes.”

AirVenture can even inspire a life-long love of aviation.  “It really is an opportunity for families to get together, enjoy the airshow, spark an interest in flight in the latest generation and hopefully we’ll see them become the military pilots, the airline pilots, maybe even the astronauts of tomorrow,” Knapinski said.

Sunday’s closing events include flights by a Bell 47 M.A.S.H. helicopter, and a vintage B17 bomber.  There’ll also be a canine demonstration presented by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, along with the EAA’s annual Memorial Wall induction ceremony.

One of the popular features of the show again this year has been ‘EAA Radio,’ with live broadcast and online coverage of the air shows and other AirVenture events all week long.
