Crews wasted 10 minutes of firefighting time when a drone interrupted their work battling the Prater Fire over the weekend.

They had to stop when a drone flew over the area and disrupted the path of a helicopter, which were being used to survey the blaze and drop retardant.

The fire grew to 2,800 acres and was 40 percent contained as of Monday morning. Fire crews expect to have the fire fully contained by Monday night, according to Fire Marshal Bob King, of the Sparks Fire Department.

King said the fire was reported at about 3 p.m. on Sunday in an area on East Prater Way and Pete’s Way, behind the Northern Nevada Medical Center. Crews initially believed 20 homes were being threatened and ambulances were temporarily kept from arriving at the hospital until the fire began moving north and east.

Viking 400

An airplane that can go virtually anywhere, do anything, and operate in the most extreme weather—and that could sell for twice what you paid for it after 30 years—might sound like a fantasy. But the iconic DHC-6 Twin Otter, which de Havilland Canada produced, fits that description. It helped launch the commuter and regional airline industry in North America, remains the backbone of maritime coastal patrols for many navies, and serves the mining and oil industries worldwide. It lands on wheels, big tundra tires, straight floats, amphibious floats, and skis. Runways are optional. Nice flat surfaces of any kind are kid stuff. When it’s 60 below in Antarctica and some scientist needs to be medevaced, this is the airplane they send.

Of the 844 of these rugged twin turboprops that were built between 1965 and 1988, when production ended, 430 are still flying. The basic unrestored airframe is good for 66,000 hours or 132,000 cycles (one takeoff and one landing). The Twin Otter will basically live as long as you do—maybe longer.

In 2005, Viking Air of British Columbia purchased the assets of Bombardier’s Commercial Service Center, including the product-support and spare-parts business for the Twin Otter, allowing Viking to work directly with operators. In 2006 it acquired the aircraft type certificate from Bombardier; and it restarted production in 2010, rechristening the Twin Otter the “Viking 400” and incorporating more than 800 changes and improvements.

Some 115 Viking 400s have been delivered to date. They include more powerful 750 shaft horsepower Pratt

Stratasys to Produce Polymer Parts for Airbus’ A350 Aircraft – July 20 …

The seeds which Stratasys Ltd. (SSYS – Free Report) sowed four years ago has finally brought fortunes for the company. The company recently announced gaining a contract to manufacture flight parts for Airbus’ A350 XWB aircraft.

Stratasys announced that Airbus has picked its wholly owned subsidiary – Stratasys Direct Manufacturing – to produce 3D printed non-structural polymer parts, such as brackets, and other parts used for system installation, for the aforementioned aircraft. The parts will be manufactured on the company’s fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D Printers, using ULTEM 9085 thermoplastic material.

It should be noted that it was 2013 when the two companies joined forces for the development and implementation of Stratasys’ FDM technology for Airbus tools and flying parts applications that proved valuable for the latter’s A350 XWB program. In 2014, the leading aircraft manufacturer produced over 1,000 aircraft parts by using Stratasys FDM 3D printing technology.

Adoption of Stratasys’ 3D printing solution will help Airbus in improving supply chain efficiency and cost competitiveness. Per the company, “Stratasys Direct Manufacturing’s 3D printing capacity and infrastructure allow printing and shipping parts on demand to Airbus, bringing the expected reactivity, tighter turnaround times and lower inventory costs.”

Notably, Stratasys’ 3D printers are already being used in the aerospace industry, but either for prototypes or as an assembly tool. Some of the customers in the aerospace industry which are using the company’s services include Boeing (BA – Free Report) , Siemens, Boom Supersonic and United Launch Alliance.

However, Airbus’ recent deal with

Possible UTC Buy Of Rockwell Collins Could Extend Already Broad Reach

The acquisition by United Technologies Corp. of aerospace and avionics equipment maker Rockwell Collins Inc. could extend the Farmington conglomerate’s already broad reach into the manufacturing of planes and their many parts and components.

News outlets reported Friday that the Farmington-based UTC was in talks to acquire Rockwell Collins, which makes airplane cabin and flight deck components, military equipment and other parts and services.

Neither UTC nor Rockwell Collins commented Monday.

Such a deal might draw opposition from airline manufacturers concerned about UTC’s new market strength, analysts said. A combination of the two companies would include Pratt Whitney engines, UTC-made landing gear and brakes and Rockwell Collins-manufactured flight controls, seats and other parts.

ASU study reveals ways to keep you healthier on planes

August 4, 2017

Researchers say factors like plane size and boarding method can have a huge impact on infection rates

Air travel may be the quickest way to get to your vacation destination, but it’s also one of the speediest ways for infectious diseases to spread between people, cities and countries.

So when patient zero — or a sneezing toddler — makes it onto the plane, what will minimize your chances of getting sick? An Arizona State University team that includes School of Human Evolution and Social Change Assistant Professor Anuj Mubayi; Department of Biomedical Informatics Associate Professor Matthew Scotch; School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning Assistant Research Professor Robert Pahle; and outside researchers Sirish Namilae, Ashok Srinivasan and Pierrot Derjany has turned to applied math and computing tools for the answer.

Their new study reveals that factors like plane size and boarding method can have a huge impact on infection rates, and includes new recommendations that may soon be adopted at an airway near you.

The best and worst airline policies for passenger health

Plane rides are a triple threat when it comes to spreading sickness: They force people into a closed space for a long period of time, make close contact with others unavoidable, and often bring together people from far-ranging geographic regions who may have different levels of disease vulnerability.

Because of this, officials often use travel restrictions

The 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant Is a Journey to World War II

EXPAND

Restaurants that echo with history are getting harder and harder to find in Los Angeles. Change is inevitable, but it also creates a longing for permanence. Finding a hidden gem often presents a dilemma of whether to share it with those who will also care, or to keep it secreted away from potential over-saturation. But shining a light on things that matter can in the end help preserve them. The 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant, located in a remote and tucked-away place at the Van Nuys Airport, needs to be preserved and celebrated.

Opened in 1973 by David Tallichet, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, as a means to share his love of all things aviation-related, the restaurant was modeled on a rustic Normandy farmhouse. Tallichet chose a spot on the sidelines of the airport’s long, straight runway and named it after the 94th Aero Squadron, a much revered U.S. Army Air Service unit during the first World War.

A sense of vintage magic abounds. Ivy wraps around white-washed and exposed brick, and a World War I propeller plane sits flirtatiously on the front lawn near vintage war Jeeps, a cart full of baled hay, some cannons and an honest to goodness World War II ambulance. Upon further inspection, gaping holes can be noticed on the roof of the far end of the restaurant. You wonder what accident may have occurred here, until you find that this is merely the
