Westover C-5M’s receive “stand-down” order

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Westover’s $90 Million remodeled planes are parked.

It has to do with the landing gear.  All the C-5M’s across the country, including the ones at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee are on what the Air Force calls “stand-down”.

That means very limited flying, only when the landing gear stays down. These newly remodeled planes are having issues with a bearing set in the nose gear, causing the nose gear to not function properly. There were two incidents involving C-5M’s from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware that forced the Air Force to send out this order.

“Because we couldn’t guarantee the safety of our crews in the airplane to go ahead and stand down the fleet until they could get those parts manufactured,” said D. Scott Durham, Commander for the 439th Airlift Wing.

Commander Durham says the repairs could take weeks, or even longer. These parts need to be built.

Commander Durham told 22News he does not believe there was a mistake, just the parts are getting old.

“The gear is an 80’s design gear system and that was not part of the original scope of the refurb for the M Model,” said Commander Durham.

Once they get the parts, they can do the repairs at Westover.

Westover still has one C-5A model which is flying and it is at the Airshow in Westfield this weekend.

The Broken Props Airplane Club could not fly during the Somerset County 4-H Fair this year because of President Donald Trump’s visit to Bedminster. The club members, however, still parted with valuable life lessons.

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Marshall Hayward has been flying model airplanes and rockets at the Somerset County 4-H Fair for the past 15 years, but this year, the planes couldn’t take flight.

As the leader of the Broken Props Airplane Club, a model airplane club associated with 4-H, Hayward has been teaching children and teens how to fly model planes and rockets, and the life lessons that come with it.

This year, however, the planes could not take off at the fair because of temporary flight restrictions in place because President Trump is vacationing nearby at his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

Hayward said that he received notices from the FAA instructing the club not fly.

“It’s because the president is in Bedminster and we’re in the zone, we’re only 4 miles away. We’re fairly close,” Hayward said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a TFR (temporary flight restriction) during the fair previously.”

Marine Corps lifts grounding of MV-22 Osprey and other aircraft in deployed unit following crash

The U.S. Marine Corps announced Wednesday it was lifting an “operational pause” for the roughly 20 aircraft assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which suffered the loss of an MV-22 Osprey over the weekend off the coast of Australia — resulting in the deaths of three Marines.

The Osprey slammed into the back of USS Green Bay, a U.S. Navy amphibious transport ship, while attempting to land.

In addition to grounding the MV-22 Ospreys in the deployed unit threat, Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier jets, CH-53 Super Stallion helicopters, AH-1Z Cobra helicopter gunships were also grounded for two days.

A Defense Department official told Fox News the Marine Corps is weighing a decision to ground its entire fleet of aircraft for a day across the service following the second deadly crash of a Marine Corps aircraft. Last month, a Marine Corps cargo plane crashed in the Mississippi Delta, killing all 16 aboard.

As a result of the crash in Mississippi, the Marine Corps grounded all of its KC-130T aircraft. The Navy soon followed suit and grounded its version of the airplane.

Study Projects Newer Cargo Conversions Accelerating in 2020

Although older-generation single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft generally make the best candidates for freighter conversions, values of mid-life examples of newer-generation models such as the Boeing 737-800 will decline enough in the next 24 to 36 months to render them suitable for adaptation to cargo haulers, according to a new white paper released by UK-based consultancy IBA Group. From 2020, the market for conversions of newer-generation aircraft should accelerate to meet freighter replacement and cargo-market growth needs, it added.

The release of the report, titled “Freighter Conversions—Capitalizing On the Resurgence In Demand,” accompanies the launch of IBA Group’s freighter advisory practice, led by 30-year Aldav Engineering and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) veteran Moshe Haimovich. IBA Group’s decision to establish the practice follows IATA’s report of a year-on-year increase of nearly 11 percent in cargo volume globally in the first half of the year and 20-year forecasts from Airbus and Boeing that project a respective demand for 1,950 and 2,480 additional freighters, most of which they expect will involve conversions of passenger aircraft.

Focusing on the Boeing 737-800 as a particular example of a newer-generation model of which a ready supply of 14- to 19-year-old examples will become candidates for freighter conversions, IBA Group said that current market values of the model in that age range remain too high for conversion due to strong passenger-market demand for mid-life examples. IBA’s ideal estimated market value for a 737-800 as a conversion candidate is $11 million or less
