Easy fixes for six common laptop problems

We live and work in a cold, cruel world where our laptops can take a lot of abuse. Regardless of how gentle we try to be, our notebooks will probably be dropped, spilled upon or worse—sooner, if not later.

But if you think that all notebook damage can be repaired only by the manufacturer or a computer shop, think again. Many problems can be inexpensively and easily fixed with common tools, spare parts, and a little effort. Some repairs are no harder than high school art projects. That said, there are modern laptops that are very difficult to open and repair. If you can’t see any screws, you’re in for a tough time.

Using a couple of old, beat-up mainstream notebooks, we’ll show you how to fix everything from a broken case and frayed charger cord to a bad fan and scratched screen. Each restoration project has time and cost estimates, as well as what materials you’ll need to do the trick. Just follow the basic directions we’ve outlined for each repair.

Fair warning: Your system might be a little different, require special parts, or need a slightly different approach. YouTube is your friend.

One additional note: While we generally applaud improvisation and recycling old parts (especially AC adapters), there’s nothing like having the precisely correct part to do the repair. In fact, while fans and notebook keyboards may look similar, they can be very different. Each repair features links to

This Day in Twilight Zone History – September 22nd – celebrating the 1961 debut of "The Arrival"

Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone premiered on October 2, 1959, and over the course of its five-year run would churn out 156 episodes and cement itself as a classic of science fiction television. Its influence would be felt in any number of shows and movies that would follow — from The Walking Dead to Stranger Things — and beyond, becoming one of the enduring pop culture staples of its era. This Day in Twilight Zone History presents key commemorative facts about the greatest science fiction/fantasy television series of all time, presented by author Steven Jay Rubin, whose latest book is The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia (arriving this October). Whether it’s a key performer’s birth or death, the date an episode debuted, or any other related fact, This Day in Twilight Zone History presents a unique aspect of the rich history of this television series and the extraordinary team that created it.

Today, September 22, This Day in Twilight Zone History celebrates the original premiere of “The Arrival” on this day in 1961.  While the world mourned the plane-crash death of U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, which had taken place four days earlier, television audiences were treated to another form of air incident.

Aero team gears up for sophomore season

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aero team is in their second year as part of SAE and this fall plans to push the program to new heights before their competition in March 2018.

The SAE Aero team was originally a part of the Make To Innovate (M:2:I) program that is housed in the aerospace department. After the spring 2016 semester, the team leaders of the M:2:I team reached out to the SAE International organization at Iowa State to propose an addition to SAE for an aero team.

The group of students who were formerly part of the M:2:I group officially became the SAE Aero team in September 2016.

Aero will be traveling to Lakeland, Florida for its second competition in March 2018 to showcase new ideas and manufacturing processes learned from their inaugural season. This competition is held annually and hosts 75 collegiate teams who compete with RC-powered aircraft to transport mock payloads and demonstrate the ability to take off, maneuver the airplane and then land again.

“We were limited to only having 15 members for the M:2:I group, so to have a lot of new members like we do now is an awesome thing,” said Brian Gerike, project manager for the aero team.

The team is broken up into three separate sub-teams: aero, propulsion and structures.

“I am in charge of integrating all the components together,” said Mike Groth, a senior in aerospace engineering. “I’ll take what the structures team is doing and combine it with the aero team and propulsions team. If something

What’s The Best Flight School Trainer?

  • Text size:

I got an email this week from a reader on the cusp of making a small fleet purchase for a few flight schools. I was asked for an opinion on the various choices in the training market. The more you think about this, the more difficult the decision actually is. There’s simply no perfect airplane for the task. Each choice is compromised in some way that favors another choice that’s compromised in another way.

So what’s the most important aspect of this decision? It’s not how the airplane flies. You can teach someone to fly in a broken-down Tri-Pacer with a tired engine, raggedy fabric and mold-stained seats. Flying is flying. What’s most important is dispatch reliability: keeping the airplane available on the ramp so it’s always ready for students to fly and constantly producing revenue for the school. Nothing is a bigger drag on the PL than a broken airplane baking in the sun. Two broken airplanes at a school with only six is a disaster.

Dispatch reliability is defined by the design itself but more importantly by how easy the airplane is to fix and service with available parts. With that in mind, you can easily see why the Cessna 172 remains the gold standard for flight

“Crashing is inevitable and part of the experience”: 3 Oaks Flyers planes soar Saturdays above Pungo – Virginian

The Pungo morning is crisp and clear, and filled with the type of cool air that makes your spirits soar.

It’s also the kind of day that draws members of the 3 Oaks Flyers Club to a 300-foot strip hidden by fields of dried corn stalks.

Half a dozen SUVs slowly pull up behind the open-air barn and unload their precious planes. These radio-controlled model aircraft are not the toy-store type but rather sophisticated to-scale replicas the men assemble and outfit with motors, decals and transmitters.

Mike Ames of Virginia Beach designs and builds his planes, and admits to having 60. Today, his viper jet, which costs about $400, zips through the mostly cloudless skies, nimble and fast, knowing it could reach speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

“Oh, yes, it’s fast,” said Ames, smiling with pride that the plane landed OK and would need no glue or parts. Only a wheel came off and it was quickly fixable.

Meet the Beech engineer who didn’t get paid to design the Bonanza airplane

An estimated 350 airplanes are descending on the Wichita area for the American Bonanza Society’s 50th Anniversary convention.

The group’s annual convention, which starts Thursday and is expected to draw about 800 of the group’s 9,200 members, comes on the 70th anniversary of the first delivery of the Bonanza, a single-engine airplane that’s still in production today at the Textron Aviation East Campus at Central and Webb.

Wichitan Paul Miller was a member of the Bonanza’s original design team.

Miller, 99, was one of the eight Beech Aircraft Co. engineers comprising a “volunteer” team led by Ralph Harmon that designed the piston-engine, four-seat airplane.

“If one individual gets the credit, he’s the one,” Miller said of Harmon, who he added was a visionary and “a great boss.”

Harmon, however, needed engineers on the Bonanza team who were willing to work without pay.

That’s because the idea for the Bonanza emerged during World War II. And Beech was in the throes of war-time production.

“There was no work of any consequence in the country that was not war related, really,” Miller said, “and of course, we in the airplane business were not allowed to do anything except support the war effort.”

Beech produced 7,400 airplanes for the military during the war

Saudia Airlines Deploys New Wi-Fi on 76 Airplanes

Saudia Airlines has deployed new in-flight connectivity (IFC) technology across 76 aircraft with a unique business model. According to SITAONAIR, supplier of Saudia’s IFC, first and business class passengers will receive free Wi-Fi access by entering their e-ticket code in the access portal.

The Middle Eastern carrier has also taken steps to eliminated the need for passengers to take their credit cards out and enter their information while airborne. Passengers traveling in coach cabins on Wi-Fi equipped Saudia airplanes will be able to purchase their access during the initial booking phase for their flight. SITAONAIR worked in collaboration with the airline and Amadeus on an Application Programming Interface (API) integration project to give passengers better control over their inflight connectivity experience.

Saleh Al Jasser, director general of Saudia Airlines, says the new Wi-Fi equipage and business model implemented alongside SITAONAIR, “has enabled us to reconfigure our Wi-Fi price plans for all our passengers, enabling us to offer the service for a lower cost.”
