PINCHER CREEK –
A handful of turn-of-the-century vehicles made a pit stop in Pincher Creek on Aug. 1 as part of the Foothills Model T Ford Club’s 2017 summer tour.
Pincher Creek was just one of many stops, including Cardston, Waterton and Cowley, as the club drove their 100-year old vehicles down the scenic highways of southern Alberta.
Collecting and refurbishing these historic vehicles is a passion for the club members, and for Robb Wolff, it is a family affair.
“My dad started restoring old cars and I guess I just inherited that gene,” Wolff said.
Wolff’s Model T is a stripped down racer — with no windshield or roof — which he recreated and restored from the ground up.
Wolff said this sort of racing machine has a history in Alberta. In the 1940s, the Lions Clubs of Edmonton and Calgary hosted races to raise funds for orphans in Europe during the Second World War.
The first race took place in Calgary’s Victoria Park on Labour Day of 1941, providing thrills for the 12,000 spectators.
Wolff said the recreation and maintenance of these vehicles are easier than some might think.
“Most people would think you can’t get parts, but really you can,” he said. “A lot of the parts they actually make new, the ones that wear out a lot.”
Wolff said the Model T is special
