Apple SVP Bruce Sewell interview details clash with Qualcomm over iPhone patent royalties

A new report from Bloomberg goes into detail about how relations between Apple and Qualcomm soured so quickly, after years of collaboration, featuring quotes from Qualcomm executives and excerpts from a new interview with Apple SVP Bruce Sewell.

Sewell points out that the Qualcomm modem inside an iPhone costs Apple about $18. In addition, Apple has to pay 5 percent of the phone’s sale price. It is that royalty that Apple deems exorbitant and unfair.

According to court filings reported by Bloomberg, a senior Apple executive (assumed to be Tim Cook) spoke to a Samsung executive (likely Vice Chairman Jay Lee) and ‘urged’ Samsung to put pressure on South Korean regulators to amp up their antitrust investigation into Qualcomm.

This pressure would ultimately lead to a lowering of Qualcomm’s prices, which would benefit both Apple and Samsung. Qualcomm alleges that this conspiring plot is anti-competitive. Apple SVP Sewell says that ‘nothing improper happened’.

“I don’t know what conversation they are talking about,” says Bruce Sewell, the company’s general counsel, in an interview at headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. “For Apple to have said to Samsung, ‘You guys are in Korea and you should be watching this case carefully,’ doesn’t seem to me to be anything beyond simply the kind of conversation two CEOs might have.”

The Korean governing body ruled against Qualcomm, and ordered changes to its pricing scheme. In the US, the FTC filed a complaint in January. Apple quickly followed with

Is this the beginning of the end for the world’s biggest passenger plane?

The once-glittering future of the Airbus A380 superjumbo is looking shaky after a third significant engine failure forced an Air France flight to make an emergency landing last weekend.

A similar incident occurred in 2010 on a Qantas A380 flight from Singapore to Sydney, and a less serious engine malfunction caused another Qantas A380 Los Angeles-Melbourne flight to turn back in May of this year.

To make matters worse, Airbus suffered a massive blow in December with the announcement that it was forced to postpone deliveries of 12 A380s to its biggest customer, Emirates, over the next two years due to an issue with its Rolls Royce engines.

Just days later, the company announced that an order of 100 planes to Iran Air did not include a single A380, with the airline opting instead for smaller models.

When the superjumbo was first unveiled in 2005, it was hailed as the beginning of a new era in long-haul air travel: not only the largest, but the greenest and quietest aircraft in the world.

But orders, having fluctuated over time, have since been on a sharp decline, and bigger, it would appear, is not always better when it comes to ferrying an ever-increasing number of passengers through the skies.

So could this latest Airbus A380 mishap be the final nail in the coffin?

What happened to the Air France flight?

Last Saturday during an Air France flight from Paris to Los Angeles, passengers reported hearing a loud bang followed by vibrations that shook the cabin for

Terry Mosher: This hydro racing family is at home on shores of Hood Canal

Tim Kelly is 84 and lives out in the remote northwestern part of Mason County, where the water is blue as a warm summer sky, beaches are littered with clams and oysters and quiet is interrupted only by the sounds of the occasional boat on Hood Canal and the wings of graceful birds soaring.

Here in Dewatto, Kelly has been hiding in peaceful solitude for 27 years since retiring from Otis Elevator. But he can’t hide his association with boat racing as the grandfather of J. Michael Kelly, one of the top H1 Unlimited hydroplane drivers in America.

Kelly was home in Dewatto on Sept. 17 when his grandson, who is a carpenter in the off-season and lives in Bonney Lake, took second in the Graham Trucking boat at the San Diego Bayfair HI Unlimited hydroplane race on Misson Bay. Andrew Tate in the Jones Racing boat edged Kelly.

Tate finished second and Kelly third, behind Jimmy Shane in the Miss Madison, in the national points race decided over five races – Columbia Cup in Tri-Cities, the Albert Lee Appliance Cup at Seafair in Seattle, two races in Detroit ‑ President’s Cup and the Gold Cup ‑ and the season finale in San Diego. Kelly won in Tri-Cities and finished second at Seafair and in San Diego.

J. Michael Kelly, 38, started racing unlimited in 2004 and was named the rookie of the year. It’s
