Boeing (BA) Secures $11B Order for 75 737-MAX Airplanes

The Boeing Company BA has secured an order from Avolon – the international aircraft leasing company – for 75 of its 737-MAX airplanes. Following the signing of memorandum of understanding at the Paris Air Show in June, the deal has been finally awarded during the 2017 Dubai Air Show.

Order in Detail

The agreement comprises an order for 55 MAX 8 and 20 MAX 10 airplanes – the newest and largest member of the 737 MAX family – including purchase rights for 20 additional MAX 10 jets.

Valued at nearly $11 billion at current list prices, the deal represents the largest single order till date that the company has placed with Boeing. Given the size of the deal, Avolon is expected to get a discount on the list price of the aircraft.

With this latest aircraft deal, Avolon’s position as a leading lessor in the global commercial aviation market is likely to be strengthened. Currently, this Dublin, Ireland-based company has over 140 MAX aircraft in its owned and committed fleet, and expects MAX family airplanes to continue boosting its customers’ profit in their businesses, going forward.

Deals Inked at the Ongoing Dubai Air Show

Demand for Boeing’s commercial airplanes has been rising owing to a steady increase in passenger and freight traffic.

Of late, at the Dubai Air Show, this aircraft giant received an order from the Kuwait-based ALAFCO

Living in 3-D

Behlen Industries, the largest manufacturer of steel buildings in Canada, has been busy modernizing its operations in the past few years. Its approach has been a mix of money-smart upgrades on existing machinery and innovative process changes made possible by investments in both equipment and software.

The frameless Viking Air Manufacturing building, located in Sydney, B.C., was fabricated by Behlen Industries. Completed in 2009, it is 52,070 sq. ft. It features a massive hangar, as well as storage space for up to $5 million in spare airplane parts. Images courtesy of Behlen.

Inside Tesla’s New Electric Semi-Truck

Tesla’s design aesthetic, which has been led by Franz von Holzhausen, has helped it amass a committed fan base as well as some equally passionate detractors. Regardless of whether a person loves or loathes them, a Tesla is unmistakable.

The Tesla Semi, the all-electric heavy-duty truck CEO Elon Musk unveiled Nov. 16, is no different. And not just because it shares a number of parts with its new mass-market passenger vehicle the Model 3, including the same motor, handles, and display screen.

Fortune had a chance to get inside the Tesla Semi before the reveal. Here are the details that stood out.

Approaching the cab, you immediately notice the angled windshield wipers—which look a lot like the one on the new Roadster prototype unveiled at the same event—and the shiny chrome door handles that are also on the new Model 3 passenger vehicle.

There are no exterior steps like you might find on a traditional truck. Instead, the door is long and low. Once the door is opened a set black steps are inside.

Walking up the short, steep steps, a long handle ready for support if needed, you arrive at the landing. This area is essentially divided into two areas. The big takeaway here is there is quite a bit of space, and the ceiling height is high enough to allow a person to stand upright. Towards the front of the cab is a central captain’s chair that is flanked by two display screens, one on each side. The screens are the

Jackson Hobby Shop looking to sell after nearly 50 years in business

CLOSE

The Gustafson family has owned and operated the Jackson Hobby Shop since July 1969.
Mike Davis

JACKSON – When Frank Gustafson first asked customers for help, they couldn’t even see him.

The Jackson Hobby Shop – then owned by his parents, Howard and Sylvia – opened in July 1969, stuck in the basement of a sporting goods store. Gustafson, then just 14 years old, could barely see over the counter.

But he could ring up customers’ orders – they were mostly plastic models – and, before long, he could answer their questions. And by the time he took over the store in 1986 – radio-controlled airplanes, boats and cars had already become the hottest sellers – he could fix most of them as well.

RELATED: The truth about the ‘retail apocalypse’

“It was pretty much a given that I’d be here all these years later,” Gustafson said. “After doing it for so many years, it’s almost second nature.”

But after 48 years in

The Bookworm Sez The better side of Hollywood

The Bookworm Sez
The better side of Hollywood

You and your friend have a lot in common.

You both laugh at the same idiotic things, enjoy the same food and drink (often together), and you share similar experiences. You’ve taught your friend a lot and you’ve been a willing pupil, too. If you’re both lucky, as in the new book “Hank Jim” by Scott Eyman, it’ll be that way for decades.

“Hank Jim: The Fifty-Year Friendship of Henry Fonda and James Stewart” by Scott Eyman c.2017, Simon Schuster, $29.00 / $39.00 Canada, 384 pages

Born into a large family in Nebraska in May of 1905, Henry Fonda once recalled an aimless, directionless childhood. That’s surprising, since young Hank was a focused boy who always insisted on perfection in everything he tackled, including hobbies, studies, and acting, which he embraced when a local woman invited him to join the community theatre. When he realized that he loved acting – and he was good at it – Hank received the blessings of his parents to move to New York City , to see where his dramatic talents might take him.

James Stewart was born almost exactly three years after Hank, in a similar small town in Pennsylvania . His father was a businessman who owned a hardware store and who made sure that his children weren’t insulated from others unlike them. Young Jim was an easy-going, affable boy who loved animals

Liberian Youth Builds Model Aircraft that Actually Flies

Morris Boayla with his chopper

Morris Boayla was a fascinating child who from age three shocked people with his keen interest in moving objects.

Unlike other children who loved all kinds of toys, Boayla’s only interest was in airplanes and cars, and would not accept any gifts from his parents except flying toys.

Fast-forward to age 11, he started to completely dismantle his toy airplanes and cars beyond recognition and started trying to build his own with wooden or old zinc materials.

During this period, he failed several times trying to make the cars move by remote. But his curiosity didn’t stop him from keep on trying.

Two years later at age 13, his long struggle came to an end after he was able to build his first toy car that could move via remote. From that moment, Boayla set his sights on bigger things. The quest was to build an aircraft; but due to schooling, and lack of support, he had to abandon this dream.

“I was a born artist with interest only in flying and moving objects. I used to refuse anything that was not a flying or moving object. This is a God-given talent and something natural I started putting into practice.

“The start was so rocky that I total give up to focus on school because whenever I tried to set down and start working on my aircraft, the time was not available. People used to call me as an unnecessary child who does not love to study but play,” Boayla
