Flying a drone requires common sense and following local and federal guidelines.

If a drone is on your Christmas wish list or you plan to buy one during the holiday sales season, be aware of a long list of rules to stay out of trouble.
It’s not as simple as tearing open a drone box and becoming an instant amateur pilot in your backyard. And most of the cool places you might want to fly are off-limits, such as the Sundial Bridge, Whiskeytown Lake, Burney Falls and Castle Crags. Don’t go there with your drone.
“Pay attention to local rules. Federal lands tend to be off-limits and always be safe and use common sense,” said Brad Finch, manager of Redding RC Hobby.
Basic rules for hobbyists include not flying a drone higher than 400 feet and don’t soar over people and buildings, Finch said. Don’t intentionally fly over moving vehicles and it’s a good idea for drone pilots to bring a spotter along, according to national instructions. Another guideline: Don’t fly while drunk or on drugs.
To prevent drones from colliding with airplanes and helicopters and to keep the airspace safe, 5-mile, no-fly radiuses have been established at Redding
