Hypersonic vehicles, which flight at Mach numbers lager than five (flight velocity more than 6000 km/h), will serve as a more convenient and efficient transport tool than present subsonic airplanes for long-distance journeys in future. Typically, it only takes a couple of hours from Beijing to New York. Recent interest in these vehicles has grown intensively, and various types of innovative designs have been proposed and studied.

Despite entering the age of hypersonic flight, there still exist many problems to resolve. How to design an advanced aerodynamic configuration is one of them. Prof. Kai Cui, Dr. Yao Xiao, Dr. Ying-Zhou Xu, and Dr. Guang-Li Li from State Key Laboratory of High Temperature Gas Dynamics, Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences tried to tackle this problem in a long time. After more than seven years investigation, they first proposed a family of innovative configurations named “Hypersonic I-shaped Aerodynamic Configurations”. Their work was published as the cover article of SCIENCE CHINA Physics, Mechanics Astronomy (2018, 61(2), 024722).

In general, there are at least three objectives in designing an aerodynamic configuration, the high lift to drag ratio (L/D), the high volumetric efficiency and the high lift coefficient. Designers always take the high L/D during the cruise state

A Young Man’s Business Building Legos

Photo provided by Jake Hansen.

Jake Hansen, a homeschooled Junior, has built his business, Bricktree Customs, building custom, carnival-themed LEGO kits, which he sells online and in the local toy shop, Lost Marbles Toy Store.

Hansen’s first product for Bricktree Customs was a popcorn cart, a festive little red cart sized for a minifigure, the name for the small, yellow LEGO people, to push around. Red Baron, his second product is the well-known airplane roundabout for kids. Three planes revolve around each other, one of which is The Fokker Triplane, Red Baron. The other two are biplanes.

Hansen focuses on realism, and the model folds up just like the real thing, to be driven to the next show. The Red Baron won a contest at Longmont Museum for Hansen’s age category. One of his best sellers is his Claw Machine, his second iteration, with a moving claw, coin slot, and flap for the prizes to fall from, which are colorful and fun, tiny little LEGO pieces. His newest creation, “Rocket Ride,” is an honest to reality model of a rocket ship kiddie ride.

When asked, he said his mom handles the book-keeping and correspondence, but for the most part, he is left to his own devices to design and build the kits and free to focus on quality and craftsmanship.

First, he begins with simply a spark of inspiration. A design he puts together in the course of playing with his models or it just pops into his head.

Next, he creates

World news

Bruce Connolly could not stop taking photos during the 40-minute journey from the airport to the centre of Zunyi, a city in the southwestern province of Guizhou, even though many of his fellow travellers fell asleep as soon as they got on the bus following a three-hour flight from Beijing.

The trip, which began on Nov 21, was the first time in 22 years Mr Connolly had visited the province. In 1995 he took a journey from Beijing to Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, which led him through Guiyang, Anshun and Liupanshui in Guizhou.

Later, he embarked on rail journeys that took him across the central and southwestern parts of the province, and even though he did not stay in Guizhou during his travels, he said he noticed the disparities in living standards between the fast-growing cities on China’s east coast and the mountainous, impoverished province.

In 1987 he left his native Scotland to work as a broadcaster for Radio Beijing International. He hosted his own programme, Bruce in Beijing, from 2004 until it ended last year. The work enabled him to travel around China and tell his global audience about his experiences.

“Accepting the invitation to participate in a Long March of the New Era with other foreign experts gave me a precious opportunity to really explore Guizhou,” he said, referring to a commemoration of the Red Army passing through the province during the Long March (1934-36).

“To be honest, I was still expecting to see lingering rural poverty, but my preconceptions

2018 Flying Buyers Guide

Few events in life compare to the thrill and excitement that come with earning a pilot certificate. A close second, though, just might be owning your own airplane.

For me, it seemed at first like aircraft ownership might merely be a natural progression to the commercial pilot certificate I was already working on. The taildragger I eventually bought, however, became more of a friend — a pal who shared my deep commitment to flying. The airplane, a Champion 7ECA Citabria (that’s “airbatic” spelled backward, by the way ) sported a big “For Sale” sign when I first saw it. I thought, Why not? I had a job. And I owned my own car. I quickly pictured myself taxiing around the airport, giving a thumbs-up to people I passed. Then there was the fun I knew was waiting at places distant and times future.

Of course, I knew nearly nothing about owning an airplane, short of writing a check and adding gas and oil before launching into the sky. The owner was asking $2,500. I thought for a few seconds and simply said, “OK.” No one else looked at the airplane before I handed over the money. Why would I be concerned? The owner was an AP mechanic. He’d never sell the airplane if it had a problem, right? I saw the real problem being I had no idea how to fly a taildragger. There was much to learn.

I knew I needed insurance and a place to keep it, not to mention

DHL Supply Chain blooms rapidly in the Middle East

In August 2017, DHL Supply Chain announced an 18% increase in its Middle East revenues year to date. The company also had several large-scale agreements since the beginning of the fiscal year 2017. This included an agreement with Etihad Airways Engineering, to manage stores, local transport movements, and associated supply chain planning at the Etihad Airways Engineering hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport; a joint venture with Bahwan Cybertek in Oman; and a ten-year logistics contract with Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon to handle storage, warehousing, and domestic transportation of aircraft service parts at Hong Kong International Airport (HKA). As David Christmas, chief executive officer for Middle East, Russia and Turkey (MERT) at DHL Supply Chain and Head of Transport (MLEMEA) agrees, things are looking great indeed.

The supply chain market

Christmas says: “Supply chain is a very significant industry for most of the countries in the Middle East. And it is changing quite rapidly. If you look at the last decade, the way warehouses were structured, the way transport fleet was run—it was very basic. But now, change is driven by the economic environment. Big companies are looking to do things differently, so that’s one of the main reasons our revenue has gone up so significantly.”

David Christmas

Christmas attributes this progress to first time outsourcing; companies like DHL Supply Chain take over the end-to-end supply chain of big organisations. Many large businesses are turning to this now because of economic pressure. CEOs around the world are trying to cut down assets,

Virgin America Going Away But Maybe A Bit Of Their Style Will Remain at Alaska

The integration of Alaska Airlines and Virgin America is underway. Alaska’s recent acquisition of Virgin America created the fifth largest domestic airline.

Now the Alaska Airlines brand is getting refreshed with a new coat of paint for the livery and, of course, brand new uniforms for the flight crew. A full line of apparel with over 90 pieces was revealed on the fashion runway (pun intended) last week. Seattle fashion designer Luly Yang custom designed the collection.

Actual airline employees modeled the gear, from pilots to maintenance technicians. Yang surveyed thousands of employees and conducted focus groups to come up with a collection that is fresh and brand-new for the newly formed Alaska Airlines, with functionality and signature style being kept top-of-mind. The new uniforms will be wear-tested over the next two months before final improvements are made.

One of the most sought after improvements by employees was more pockets, according to Sangita Woerner, Alaska Airlines’ VP of Marketing. Woerner told pop culture site PopSugar, “What Luly did was she got down to that level of detail and was really smart about where she placed those pockets to make sure they were super usable.” Pockets have been incorporated into almost every piece, even dresses. The pockets can fit larger devices, work tools, baggage tags, pens, and other miscellaneous items.

Probing the power of the winds

Any world with an atmosphere has wind. Simply put, wind is moving air. Winds can be powerful — which means, in the literal sense, full of power. That’s why a dramatic storm’s winds can rip roofs off of houses. When harnessed by turbines, less turbulent winds can electrify cities and towns. Over the long term, steady streams of wind can sculpt landscapes and ecosystems. Three finalists at this year’s Broadcom MASTERS competition each presented findings on various aspects of powerful winds from their personal research.

Broadcom MASTERS brings together 30 U.S. middle-school students each year to tackle team challenges. (MASTERS stands for Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars.) The program was created by Society for Science the Public, which publishes Science News for Students. Broadcom Foundation, headquartered in Irvine, Calif., sponsored the event.

Unlike most science competitions, only about one-fourth of a finalist’s overall score is based on the qualifying research that he or she had entered at a science fair the previous school year. Sara Kaufman, 12, Cooper City, Fla., analyzed devices that homeowners might use to protect their roofs during hurricanes. This project helped earn her second place in the mathematics category, valued at $2,500. (The overall, first-place winner for this year’s Broadcom MASTERS took home a $25,000 prize.)
