Textron Aviation Ends Cessna TTx Production

The TTx began life in 2004 as the Columbia 300, which itself grew from the Lancair ES kit airplane. Columbia also built the glass-panel equipped 350 and turbocharged 400 before the company dissolved and Cessna purchased the design in 2007. Cessna initially produced the 350 and 400, then focused on the turbocharged model only. Its name was changed to Cessna 400, then to the Corvalis TT (for twin turbocharged) before Cessna settled on the TTx name in 2011.

Corvalis is a town in Oregon near Bend, where the composite airplanes were produced before Cessna moved production to Chihuahua, Mexico, and Independence, Kansas, in 2009. This proved to be a blow for the TTx as the composite parts from Mexico were initially defective.

8-year-old Missouri girl gets 3-D printed arm

KANSAS CITY, MO — One Missouri girl’s life is changed forever with a prosthetic arm 3D printed to fit her like a glove.

FOX4’s Sherae Honeycutt was there as eight-year-old Zadie Wilson got her new arm.

It wasn’t Zadie’s birthday, but with the gift she received it may as well be.

A couple of years ago, Zadie’s family visited Science City, and one of their makers connected them with E-Nable, an online community that helps design and distribute 3D printed prosthetics free of charge.

“Everything we do here is to help educate kids, but to really be making something impactful with our maker space is fabulous,” said Ryan Bell, a Maker Specialist at Science City.

Jaquin Buchanan designs and makes prosthetics through E-Nable as a hobby. Buchanan lives in Colorado, and traveled to Kansas City on a special trip to deliver Zadie’s arm.

He let Zadie make some design choices like the color pink, a rainbow band, and a bedazzled skull and cross bones.

Buchanan works as a software engineer in his daily life.

Zadie’s arm the first prosthetic he’s presented to a child.

“Even though it’s just a hobby, you really are looking for something that’s more fulfilling than model airplanes. You’re looking for something that’s going to help someone else out, and it’s really nice to get that feeling,” Buchanan said.

When Zadie heard that she was getting her new arm her mom says she couldn’t contain her excitement.

“I told Zadie, and she’s jumping up and down running through the house going, ‘I get my arm! When?!’,” said Ashley

What led to passenger plane crash that killed all 65 on board?

A combination of human error and severe weather is being blamed for the loss of 65 passengers and crew on board a domestic flight in central Iran.

The Aseman Airlines flight left Tehran’s Mehrabad airport around 8am for the city of Yasuj in Isfahan province, said Mohammad Tabatabai, director of public relations for the airline.

The plane crashed into Dena mountain, part of the Zagros range, around 23 kilometres from Yasuj, some 500km south of the capital, he told state broadcaster IRIB.

Officials said all 65 people on board were killed, and an investigation has been ordered by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani.

Aviation safety specialist David Learmount told Al Jazeera the crash was caused by a “failure of navigation”.

“An airplane hitting mountains in clouds is like a ship hitting rocks,” he said.

Other aviation specialists said the plane may have hit the mountains as it descended.

But the airline has blamed the weather on the crash.

Bad weather prevented helicopters searching the probable crash site on Sunday with emergency workers scouring the mountainous area by land.

Officials probe first possible drone-related aircraft crash in the US

To avoid a collision, the pilot reportedly took control back from the student and performed evasive maneuvers. Unfortunately, the helicopter’s tail hit a tree, causing the pilot to lose control and resulting in a crash landing. While the FAA didn’t confirm whether a drone played a part in the crash, Bloomberg says the National Transportation Safety Board is aware that a drone may have been involved and is investigating the case with that in mind.

The incident happened above a patch of undeveloped land and is nowhere near an airport where drones are prohibited. However, under the FAA’s “Special Rule for Model Aircraft,” operators are required to fly drones within visual line-of-sight and never near traditional aircraft. According to a study commissioned by the FAA, drones could cause more structural damage to planes than birds because they have metal parts.

While authorities have yet to confirm whether a drone was truly involved in the incident, some reports are saying that the pilot saw a white DJI Phantom quadcopter. The dronemaker said in a statement that it’s “trying to learn more about this incident” and that it “stands ready to assist investigators.” Due to the nature of the incident, it also stressed its role as an “industry leader in developing educational and technological solutions to help drone pilots steer clear of traditional aircraft.”
