Safe flying is what everyone wants when in the air, and accidents are always bound to happen. But to avoid accident or incident for 50 years is considered beating the odds, and only a handful of pilots have accomplished this; some of those few live here in Corsicana.
Brad Tekell was presented with the most prestigious award the FAA issues to recognize individuals who have exhibited professionalism, skill and aviation expertise at least 50 years. Representatives of the FAA Joe Murphy and Darryl Hughes presented the award to Brad and also presented a pin to his wife Janet.
The award Tekell received is the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, which is extremely difficult to attain for any pilot, as it requires special criteria.
“The award represents 50 years of perfect flying,” Murphy said. “You can’t have any accidents, incidents, violations or penalties on your record. You have to take into consideration that most people start flying in their 20s, and you add 50 years of flying and that puts you at 70 years old. Most pilots don’t fly long enough to reach that point.”
Since the first passing of the award in 1999, only 3900 pilots in the country have received the Master Pilot Award. Tekell joins four other Master Pilots who are members of the Coyote Squadron, Col./Dr. David Campbell, Col. Gene Hathorn, Col. Bobby Grantham, and Col. Steve Richmond.
“It’s an honor and privilege to be recognized by all my counterparts; we’ve terrorized the skies of Corsicana for years now,” Tekell said jokingly.
