Boeing CEO concedes ‘mistake’ with planes in 2 fatal crashes

PARIS — The CEO of Boeing says the company made a “mistake” in handling a problematic cockpit warning system in 737 Max jets before two deadly crashes of the top-selling plane.

Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg told reporters in Paris on Sunday that Boeing’s communication “was not consistent” and that’s “unacceptable.”

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has faulted Boeing for not telling regulators for more than year that a safety indicator in the Max cockpit didn’t work.

Pilots are angry the company didn’t tell them about the new software that’s been implicated in the crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed 346 people.

Muilenburg promised “transparency” as Boeing tries to get the grounded model back in flight.

Boeing heads to Paris Air Show hobbled as its 737 Max crisis clears way for rival Airbus

Following the crashes, Boeing suspended deliveries of the planes and cut the production rate by about a fifth, from 52 to 42 a month. As expected, Boeing this week reported a decline in May orders compared with the same period last year.

“I wouldn’t want to be Boeing at the Paris Air Show,” said Robert Mann, an airline consultant who previously worked at TWA and American. “That has to be a really humbling. They just have to keep their mouth shut and serve champagne.”

The new Airbus A321XLR fits into the manufacturer’s line of A320 planes, the workhorse narrowbody aircraft that competes with Boeing’s 737s. The extended-range version would be a “niche” product and won’t likely bring in the blockbuster orders that the shorter-range versions have, Morgan Stanley said in a note on Friday.

Orders for both plane makers have been weak lately, although some analysts expect announcements of high-value widebody orders coming for either or both manufacturers during the trade show. Boeing is developing

“You put on a brave face with a couple of twin-aisle orders,” said Richard Aboulafia, aviation analyst at Teal Group, regarding Boeing’s presence at the air show.

But aside from the 737 Max crisis issues, many airlines have already ordered narrowbody planes to replace aging aircraft.

“That’s just where we are in the cycle,” said ICF’s Engel.

Boeing has a backlog of 5,546 aircraft, more than 4,400 of them for 737s. Airbus has a backlog of 7,207 planes,

Model planes hit the skies for a weekend of fun

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – If you’re looking for a little fun in the sun with your good ‘ol dad this weekend then the Grand Island Modelers association has an event for you. The group is putting on a fun fly to show off their model planes.

The Grand Island Modelers Association gets ready to take off for their fun fly.

Hundreds of pilots will be coming to the park just west of the shooting park to show off their flying skills. Kids can even take their shot at learning how to fly

“We even have what is called a buddy box system,” GI Modelers Association President Trey Salter said. “So we have two controllers and an experienced pilot will have one controller and we can give the other controller the child and allow them to fly and if they get into trouble we can take over and correct any mistakes the child made.”

The hobby is slowly losing interest, but this group says they are open to anyone learning more.

“We have about 50 something members, we have about 25 active members,” Salter said. “Some of those members are over the age of 85 and they don’t get out anymore but we give them a free membership so they can attend meetings and have a voice.”

The event is free and starts at 10 am Saturday and Sunday. There will be free food and fun activities to share this Father’s Day weekend.

News, Vintage pilots invited to fly model planes

SHOPIERE – Vintage pilots are being called to bring their planes to a set of runways in the Town of Turtle.

The Rock River Aero Modelers Society (RRAMS) are inviting pilots who are 62 and over to attend the inaugural Vintage Pilots Fun Fly from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday at 6806 S. County Road J, Beloit.

Certified event coordinator Stan Anderson said there are many events celebrating vintage planes, but few honoring the pilots.

He and the rest of the nonprofit group are inviting these older pilots for a no stress, no judgment day of flying. Anderson said the pilots are welcome to bring their model airplanes out for a day of fun.

Any radio-controlled model aircraft is welcome, though RRAMS encourages pilots to bring replicas of vintage aircrafts.

The organization is planning to make the Vintage Pilots Fun Fly the group’s second of two annual events. They still plan to host the Flying Circus Fun Fly in September.

Pilots are welcome as long as they follow the Academy of Model Aeronautics’ (AMA) rules, have no turbines and pay the $10 landing fee. He said there’s a 45-by-30-foot runway and bathrooms on-site.

Spectators are welcome to come watch for free as long as they stay behind the fence and enjoy the show.

“You can see the planes from anywhere in the area,” Anderson said.

Right now Anderson is just hoping for good weather in light of a grim forecast. He expects to have 15-30 pilots out there on Saturday,

Airbus considers making the next version of its top-selling jet an electric hybrid

In a conventional jet airplane, the engine sucks air in through its front, a compressor squeezes it, and fuel is sprayed in and lit, creating burning gases and forward thrust. With an electric-powered plane, batteries power a motor that spins a propeller. That generates far less thrust, which is why electric planes tend to be slow.

The Early Life of Kim Jong Un

In her new book, “The Great Successor: The Divinely Perfect Destiny of Brilliant Comrade Kim Jong Un,” the journalist Anna Fifield examines the life of North Korea’s dictator. Since Kim Jong Il’s death, in 2011, his son has presided over some small-market reforms to the North Korean economy, the development of its nuclear program, the continued brutalization of the country’s people, and, recently, a surprisingly warm relationship with President Trump. But Fifield also examines Kim’s early life, including unexpected Japanese influences, his often lonely adolescence and schooling in Switzerland, and his passion for machines and aviation. In doing so, she helps explain how he was able to take over the country at the age of twenty-seven and govern with ruthlessness and surprising adroitness.

I recently spoke by phone with Fifield, who is the Beijing bureau chief of the Washington Post. During our conversation, which has been edited for length and clarity, we discussed Kim’s complicated relationship with China, whether he has any ideology beyond power, and the dangers of trying to achieve economic reform while keeping a dictatorship intact.

You put forth this idea in the book that Kim Jong Un has a greater need to deliver change for his people than his father ever did because of their respective circumstances. Why is that, and how do you think that’s influenced his regime?

When his father, Kim Jong Il, took over the leadership, in 1994, North Korea was in really terrible shape.
