How Uber Plans To Get Flying Taxis Off The Ground – Fast Company

Batteries have many performance dimensions tugging in different directions, such as energy vs. power density. Elevate needs batteries with high energy density (perhaps 300 watt-hours per kilogram, up from around 230 Wh/kg today) to sustain long flights. But for vertical takeoff and landing, they also need high power density–to provide a burst of energy for those demanding operations. The two qualities don’t necessarily go together, says Omer Bar-Yohay, co-founder and CEO of Eviation. Its electric plane, the Alice Commuter, promises to carry nine passengers up to 650 miles per charge–but using traditional runways, not VTOL.

The stakes are also a lot higher in the air. “If you run out of energy in your automotive battery, you coast to the side of the road and call a tow truck,” says Mikolajczak. “You run out of energy in an aviation battery, that’s a whole different bad day. And that means the redundancy and reliability requirements for an aircraft battery have to be so much bigger.”

However, Uber’s “problem is less about range and more about airspace management and how full are the skies,” believes Bar-Yohay. Uber’s projections, says Eric Allison, are for “mid double-digit thousands” of flights per city per day.

“The current air traffic control system is, the controller talks to anywhere between five and 20 aircraft at any given time, and that’s about as many as you can do as a person,” says Prevot, Uber’s director of engineering for airspace systems. “As we

Florida pilot makes safe blind landing

By: Associated Press
May 6, 2018

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Air traffic controllers in Florida guided a student pilot to a safe landing after his small plane’s windshield became coated with oil.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that audio recordings of the April 26 flight show the unnamed pilot sought assistance about 2 miles (3 kilometers) northwest of Daytona Beach International Airport.

The pilot reached out the window of his Cessna 172 to touch the substance blocking his vision. He said it appeared to be oil and he also reported smelling fumes in his cockpit.

Air traffic controllers radioed instructions guiding the pilot to a runway. He landed safely, even with zero visibility.

The pilot indicated he’s a 20-year-old student at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. School spokesman James Roddey declined to identify him.

Roddey said the student “did exactly what he had been trained to do.”

The Camarillo Airport will get a blast from the past this weekend as the Wings of Freedom Tour flies in several historic airplanes used in World War II and beyond.

A series of planes landed at the airport Thursday afternoon, and John Mihalsky, 94, of Thousand Oaks, was there with his family to greet them.

A World War II veteran, Mihalsky served as a flight engineer in the 487th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Based in Lavenham, England, the retired staff sergeant went on 15 missions and flew in a B-17 bomber like the one that touched down on the tarmac.

“It feels fantastic, absolutely,” said Mihalsky, who was taking photos with the “Flying Fortress.”

As Donna Mihalsky wheeled her father around the plane, a smile spread across his face. He was there to see the plane he flew in

7 lessons AGL’s innovation team learnt when building a chatbot

Building a successful use case for emerging technologies like chatbots is less about the technology and more about your ability to embrace human-centred ways of thinking and working, AGL’s innovation manager, Sam King, says.

AGL’s innovation team has spent the past 18 months working on and launching a chatbot. The work was not only about tapping new technology in order to improve customer engagement experiences with the energy retailer, it was also ostensibly a lesson to the rest of the business on the power of human-centred design and iterative innovation.

Speaking at the IBM Think conference in Sydney, King said AGL established a dedicated innovation function in order to better unlock fresh thinking across the organisation. The division prioritises work around three pillars: Capability uplift, which is predominantly about human-centred design; embedding a discipline to encourage behavioural change once teams have exposed themselves to 21 century skillsets; and seeding a mindset and environment where it’s safe to fail, King said.

“While it is nebulous, the third pillar of activity are perhaps the most important,” he told attendees.

“We also try and incubate how we think things should be done and by tackling high-value business problems that people in other parts of the organisation might be intimated by.”

It’s this human-centred design and iterative approach that’s quintessential when building a chatbot, King said. “It’s not like building regular digital kit. If you go to Web page, the guiderails are
